INSANE lol

Great book, insight into Vinnies playing = priceless. I love this book. It really breaks down Vinnies playing - all the odd note values (for example) quintuplets, septuplets, etc and how he uses them / orchestrates them around his drum set. I still cant figure out how in the heck anyone could actually (accurately) transcribe Vinnies playing - its too complex for me too figure out. THANKFULLY it has been done by Marc Atkinson.

This book is great, it really does get into Vinnies playing and shows you conceptually where (alot / some) of his ideas are coming from. Definately ADVANCED material, but very refreshing, creative and eye opening - not to mention inspiring.

If you like Vinnies playing and want insight into it, look no further, it is right here in this book.

Great workbook and a MUST for any serious minded drummer

I only became aware of Vinnie recently playing with Jeff Beck on Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival and again on live at Ronnie's. How I was not aware of him before this I have no idea. He's incredible and the work book and CD's are fantastic tools. I only wish I had known about him and it a long time ago.

Difficult but good.

This is really for the very dedicated drummer who is prepared to work on extremely hard exercises. Vinnie Colaiuta is probably one of a very few who could play all these exercises, which he demonstrates on the two accompanying discs. The tracks of him playing on the Randy Waldman "Unreel" that comes with the book is worth the price alone.

About the Author
Jay Coakley is Professor of Sociology at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He received his Ph.D and M.A. from the University of Notre Dame in Sociology and received his B.A. from Regis College (Denver). digital in a pinch

I started a class while I was deployed and knew that I wasn't going to receive a paper version of this book in time. While I do enjoy reading digital books, I've always preferred highlighter to paper for text books. Well, a kindle version of this book worked perfectly in a pinch. I downloaded the night before class and got an "A" in the class. In the future, I just might do another e-textbook. Oh yeah, the text was written clearly with excellent references. It could easily be a good leisure read. Not bad for a textbook.

Great for foundation students

I teach art foundation studies to first and second semester undergraduate students,in Industrial design, Architecture, Digital animation, Communication and publicity and marketing students. i just sort of stmbled on this book, and it has been a great help, other than typical paintings by Bridget Riley or Vassarelly, these Optical patterns have been a great success with my students.

This book is a disappointment, I expected some text re the history of Notan design and some exciting examples. Instead, the book has no text at all, and most of the designs are unoriginal and unexciting. I would return the book for a refund, but it would cost as much to mail it as it cost.

This book has helped me understand the contribution and influence of the Iranian civilisation upon Islam. Milani offers a clear insight into the conundrum of Sufism in the history of Islamic thought, and its relationship to Orthodox Islam. This book has many gems of knowledge about a great many subjects. Milani takes us on a journey through time in tracing the religious consciousness of the Iranians from pre-zoroastrian to the Islamic era. great read & highly recommended.

Indispensable in order to factually understand the two Wars

Receiving this new book from Amazon.ca (Canada) on Friday, September 18, I have almost read through all the four chapters and the translator's introduction today, September 22.

This translation by Ethan Mark of the 1987 Japanese original by Yoshimi Yoshiaki (surname first) should help dispel or even debunk the usual view, held even by some Chinese, that the Sino-Japanese War 1931/1937 and the broadened Asia-Pacific War of 1941-1945 was the product of a handful of militarist Japanese generals and politicians. Actually it was a total war fought wholeheartedly by the soldiers in the battlefields and supported fully and voluntarily by the people of Japan, female and male, old and young. For China, it was a total war involving all of her combatants and civilians; for Japan, it was at the same level and of the same calibre.

Chapter 4, "Democracy from the Battlefield", is particularly illuminating. The present trend of historical revisionism in Japan may be understood better through reading these pages. This trend has its roots right after the war, as I see it.

What is amazing is that the common Japanese soldiers and common people could write so eagerly in the form of diaries and letters. Comparatively, China's soldiers (excluding officers) of the time were not as literate since many of them were actually illiterate (Cf. "The Battle for China" (Stanford University Press, 2011), page 102). (This high rate of illiteracy was probably not due to the so-called "difficulty" of writing Chinese characters. It is probably due to the lack of general education in China. Japan at the time was probably using more Chinese characters (kanji, in the full form) than now. Even now, Japan still places emphasis on calligraphy, and vertical text is still evident in her many publications.) Chinese army officers did keep many battle diaries, as I subsequently learnt from a quick reading of some pages of the book "Writing War: Soldiers Record the Japanese Empire" (2013) by Aaron Moore.

I rarely found a hint of, or allusion to, any question of justness, moral rightness or ethical doubt regarding the waging of this aggressive invasion of the mainland in any of the letters, diaries or survey results quoted in the book. An exception may be the case on pages 194-200; but that happened in 1944, towards the defeat of Japan by the USA.

This is an important book that should have come sooner after the original came out. It is exceedingly informative and it reshapes one's thinking. But it is good that the book came this year which marks the 70th anniversary of the ending of the two wars.
