FRE 123
By Law Student Lee
This book is as easy to read and understand as "123" I won't be turning it in when I complete Law School. I've already used it for my own court cases, much to the surprise of opposing attorneys. Clear and concise is what it is and is a must for Law Students.

Made it to page 81 and asked myself why . . .
By Jerry Saperstein
I am a Clive Cussler fan - but Clive Cusssler apparently little involved with the writing of the books bearing his name.

There have been eight prior Kurt Austin adventures written with Paul Kemprecos. Now no one really knows how these collaborations work, but the Kurt Austin books have been pretty good. If you've read the Dirk Pitt series (22 in all) you have a feeling for Clive Cussler solo - and with his son, Dirk Cussler, as a co-author (very different).

Cussler's trademark is high-flying plots that strain the reader's willingness to believe. But when Cussler is telling the story, he builds strong heroic characters and his story telling skills are powerful enough to pull the reader through.

In "Devil's Gate", Cussler seems to be entirely absent. The plot is outlandish - and Graham Brown's story telling is simply inadequate. The characters, including hero Kurt Austin, parody their roles in earlier books. The dialog of the bad guys seems to have come together from an accident involving refrigerator magnets. The plot and action quickly move from outlandish to bizarre to completely unbelievable - and I only made it to page 81.

The last Isaac Bell adventure, the fourth in the series after three excellent books, fell on its face as well.

A prolific author with 48 books to his credit, there's going to be a cropper or two. It seems that Cussler is trying to build a factory or farm system to up the number of titles he has in print, which in turn will increase his revenue. Apparently he is farming more and more of the actual writing out to others and, I think, the plotting as well.

The result has been more titles with the Clive Cussler name on them and, in my opinion, weaker stories.

"Devil's Gate" just doesn't make it for me. By page 81, nothing was believable and the characters - familiar from earlier books - felt like parodies.

Not up to what I expect of Cussler.

Jerry

Open the gates
By Marcus A. Lewis
Kurt Austin returns in a brand new adventure from the NUMA Files. We last saw Austin and Zavala in "Medusa" (6/09). This time around Clive Cussler has a new co-author Graham Brown. Together the two storytellers attempt to pump new blood into a waning franchise. I will miss Paul Kemprecos' contribution to the series, but the move will hopefully prove to be a beneficial one. Having said that, it does not bode well for a novel when there is a proofreading error on the very first page (though instead of through)

"Devil's Gate" begins with the requisite prologue, set on the tarmac in Santa Maria, the Azores in 1951..a mysterious Russian passenger and his luggage are being spirited to the U.S. by an American pilot named Hudson. The passenger is shot before he can reboard the plane and is left for dead. Hudson is also hit and the "Connie" he's flying goes down in the Atlantic. If you are familiar with the Cussler template, you know this incident will eventually intrude on present-day events.

If you're a high-adventure enthusiast, give Cussler and Brown a nod. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with this new-look addition to the NUMA Files.

If you like Cussler ... you'll enjoy the book.
By MED
Cussler brings back Kurt Austin - dropped into a plot from an African dictator threatening the planet.

As most Cussler books do this one opens with a flashback, this time to 1951 when a plane with a suspicious cargo goes down near the Azores. Fast forward and a scientist for the Large Hadron Collider stages his own kidnapping. The scientist is drawn into the dictator's plan for a super weapon that will hold the world's superpowers hostage to his whim.

The dictator tests his weapon on a ship near where Austin's NUMA vessel is sailing. There is the "James Bondesque" quality of some of the characters, plot lines and dialogue - and credibility is strained. Cussler and collaborator Graham Brown add a little international romance as well. But if you enjoy Cussler's regular fare you will find this an enjoyable if "reality-stretching" good vs. evil story.

Trio: A Novel Biography of the Schumanns and Brahms, by Boman Desai

The trio comprises three musical geniuses: Robert and Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Clara married Robert, with whom she fell in love when she was just sixteen, though it meant challenging the iron will of her father, who wished her to marry an earl or a count, certainly not an impoverished composer. The Schumanns had eight children, and Robert's greatness as a composer was never in doubt, but he was also mentally ill, attempted suicide, and finally incarcerated himself in an asylum, where he died two and a half years later. Johannes Brahms entered the picture shortly before the incarceration and fell deeply in love with Clara but was just as deeply indebted to Robert for getting his first six opuses published within weeks of their meeting. Clara was forbidden to see Robert in the asylum because the doctors feared she would excite him too much. Brahms became a go-between for the couple, ferrying messages to and fro, but both loved Robert too well to abuse his trust. Brahms learned instead to associate deep love with deep renunciation-and, coupling this love with early experiences of playing dance music for sailors and prostitutes in Hamburg's dockside bars, he became a victim to the Freudian conundrum: where he loves, he feels no passion, and where he feels passion, he cannot love. Germany grows in the hinterland of the story from four hundred-plus principalities to one nation under Bismarck. The great composers of the century (Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, and Wagner among others) have their entrances and exits, and the ghosts of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert are never distant. Though firmly grounded in fact, the book unfolds like a novel, a narrative of love, insanity, suicide, revolution, politics, war, and of course, music.

Review
KIRKUS REVIEWS (starred review) A novel that explores the complex relationships between classical composers Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann, and the latter's pianist/composer wife, Clara.
When Schumann, then a young law student, first meets 18-year-old Clara Josephine Wieck, she's a 9-year-old child. She's already gaining a reputation as a pianist, though, and when he sees her play, he comes to the realization that he must devote his own life to music. He convinces Clara's father, Friedrich, to take him on as a piano student, and he moves in with the family. Gradually, the bond between Clara and Robert becomes romantic, but Friedrich furiously opposes their union and forbids them to see each other. He has reasons to believe Robert is dishonorable, and he also thinks that the musician is incapable of adequately supporting his daughter financially. However, after time apart, Clara and Robert commit to each other and plan to marry against her father's wishes. Friedrich does everything in his power to stop them, including taking them to court. After composer Felix Mendelssohn testifies on Robert's behalf, Clara and Robert wed, but their relationship remains fraught with challenges. Robert wins fame for his original compositions but is unable to make much of an income, and he's emasculated by Clara's superior earning power. Clara, too, becomes frustrated that she's sacrificed her career for his and frets about his deteriorating mental health. When Robert is committed to an asylum after a failed suicide attempt, his friend, Brahms, serves as a messenger between him and Clara--and falls deeply in love with her. Author Desai (Dancing about Architecture, 2013 etc.) has produced a magisterial work, which is clearly the result of astonishingly thorough research. Although the story revolves tightly around the three main figures, there are also fascinating cameos by such musical luminaries as Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt, and Fréderic Chopin, and he memorably depicts the ego-driven rivalries between them. Each has a unique personality, and the author does a lovely job of dramatizing their quirks. Still, the character of Clara steals the show, and she emerges from the shadow of her husband's much grander reputation as a musical genius in her own right.
A riveting dramatization of musical history.

About the Author
Boman Desai was born and raised in Bombay (now Mumbai) but has lived his adult life in Chicago. After studying architecture and philosophy and getting degrees in psychology and English, he was set to become a market analyst when a chance encounter with Sir Edmund Hillary, his earliest hero, brought him back to his vocation: writing novels. He took a number of part-time jobs ranging from bartending to auditing to teaching to find time to write. He got his first break when an elegant elderly woman personally submitted a number of his stories to the editor in chief of Debonair Magazine in Bombay. The stories were all published, but the woman disappeared, and her identity remains a mystery to this day. He has published fiction and nonfiction in the US, UK, and India. His work has won awards from the Illinois Arts Council, Stand Magazine, Dana, Noemi, War Poems, and New Millennium (among others). He has taught fiction at Truman College, Roosevelt University, and the University of Southern Maine.

A novel worth reading by those who love classic music
By Rafael Ducos
Trio, a novel about the Schumanns and Brahms, by Boman Desai
This is a novel that any lover of classic music will enjoy. After Beethoven and Schubert opened the era of romanticism, a constellation of talented young musicians followed their path, and produced perhaps the most beautiful music ever written. This novel follows the lives of Clara Wieck, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms, but Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt and Wagner are as important in this novel, as fellow musicians of the time, that related to each other socially and professionally. The author uses known reliable information sources through the great deal of correspondence available, at a time when letters were the standard of communication. However, Mr. Desai is careful not to overwhelm the reader with academic information. Instead, he shows us the characters as real individuals, enmeshed in the artistic dilemmas of their times, that oddly enough, appear very similar to the present. The central "Trio" story of Clara, Robert and "Hannes" (for Johannes Brahms) is well known, but it is told as in real time. The beautiful love story of Clara Wieck and Robert Schumann is always a sheer pleasure to revisit. The real life adjustments for a talented woman, the foremost pianist of her time, married to a musical genius in the 19th century appears very similar as the conflict that "career" women face today. Her struggles for independence from her domineering father are also well known and are described in a very entertaining fashion by Mr. Desai. The conflict between those musicians who wanted to compose as they felt it versus those who were only pampering to their contemporary audience is made very clear, and sounds eerily familiar with present times. Also the conflict between the proponents of the "new music", as proposed by Wagner, and those who believed in following the steps of Beethoven, Schubert and Mozart, are also shown in a day to day "conversational way", that makes it very entertaining and didactic for those of us who are not experts on the subject.
The reading of Trio was an extremely enjoyably experience. I wish the follow up is coming soon, to show us more of the lives and times of Brahms and Wagner with their genius in full bloom and their divergent approaches to the art of music, a conflict probably alive today.

A Masterpiece!
By Wilma Steffes
TRIO - by Boman Desai

A Masterpiece! I am not literate in the classical music field or knowledgable about the lives of the composers. But I don't have to be to admire and enjoy this novel.

In my opinion, this book is poetry. If poetry is defined as "beautiful expression of beautiful impression" - it measures up.

Sometimes the writing is condensed, similar to a very few other authors I admire. I mean that there is so much meaning in a few sentences that you can read it and then think about it for a long time to get all the goodies in it.

There are great philosophical ideas expressed (and sometimes hidden) in the ordinary (maybe I should say extraordinary) conversations.

Another adjective that applies is "profound." I love the exercise it gives my mind.

There are a few things in life that give me a thrill - I mean a physical thrill, like goosebumps - watching beautiful horses - watching highly skilled performances (acrobats, the Blue Angels, certain musicians) or listening to excellent speakers. I'm getting that reaction while reading this book.

The conversations are so convincing - and the sensitivity and understanding of the girls and women - and how they think and feel - and the descriptions of how they look. The reader is right there with them.

How Robert's mind worked, how he thought about conducting, what his mental and emotional weaknesses were. Fascinating! I thoroughly enjoyed it.

More truthful than the historians
By Abelard2
The love story of Robert and Clara Schumann is so dramatic, that it practically leaps off the page of the dryest history text. Seldom have a man and a woman been blessed with such an exalted spiritual communion, as the marriage of great composer and great performing artist -- and seldom has such an ideal union been subjected to such trials, including the fanatic, demented opposition of Clara's father (the piano pedagogue Friedrich Wieck), and then, once that obstacle had been surmounted, the painful descent of Robert into madness and death. Add to this, the fascinating context of the Schumanns' circle of friends and collaborators, comprised of the leading lights of European and American art and politics -- including, most significantly, the young composer whose career they fostered, and who loved them both, Johannes Brahms -- and you have a tale which is both captivating and instructive.

Mr. Desai has chosen to tell this tale in the form a novel. As he emphasizes in his "Author's Note," he "wanted to combine the veracity of a biography with the dramatic impact of a novel, but nothing happens in the book that might not have happened historically."

In a recent address to the Russian Academy of Sciences, Lyndon LaRouche said the following: "Turn back to the relationship between the tragic principle and the sublime in the composition and performance of Classical forms of tragedy, such as the Classical Greek, Shakespeare, and Schiller. These are not to be considered as mere fiction, but as scientific studies of the principles of history." Novels, as well, can serve as a scientific study of the principles of history: take, as an example, James Fennimore Cooper's The Bravo, which, while not based on a specific historical incident, provides an uncanny depth of insight into the inner workings of the Venetian "serene republic."

Likewise, Desai's novel should be considered a fully truthful and scientific account of the historical figures and conflicts he depicts. Even in those cases where he consciously deviates from the historical record -- dutifully noted in his "Author's Note" -- he remains faithful to the ideas of the protagonists, and his portrayal of the battle of ideas during the period he depicts, just as in Shakespeare's Histories, is truthful in a more profound sense than a merely accurate record of historical events could be.

It is also the case that his novel provides a wealth of detail about the actual historical events. For example, the reader learns that Clara's close friend from childhood, Emilie List, was in fact the daughter of the great German-American economist and republican, Friedrich List. Other historical figures appear, often in scenes known to historians: the author recounts famous episodes, such as the visit of Felix Mendelssohn to the young Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who were talented amateur singers, with Albert being a capable organist as well; the dinner party at the Schumanns', shortly after the death of Mendelssohn, where Robert and Liszt almost came to blows, after Liszt made a remark deprecating Mendelssohn; the famous first visit of Brahms to the Schumanns, where Robert stopped him from playing after only a few measures of his first piano sonata, so that Robert might run and bring Clara to hear it as well. Dozens of other historically important moments are brought to life, involving a cast of characters which includes Chopin, Jenny Lind, Joseph Joachim, many other famous musicians, and numerous monarchs.

However, the most striking achievement of this novel, is to provide a compelling glimpse into the emotional world of the artists, the quality of passion required to create and interpret real art, and the world-historical sense of identity that arises from that passion. Desai shows us how this sense of identity varies with different philosophies of art, contrasting the Schumanns and their allies, with their factional opponents, the "futurists" such as Liszt and Wagner. These latter might be viewed as useful clinical studies, in contrast with the paradoxical Robert Schumann, who went mad, but was philosophically the sanest of them all.

"This is a scholarly work, extensively documented form cases derived from the NHS. The authors display vast knowledge of organizaitons and their natural resistance to change and the study is done in great detail . . . An extensive bibliography provides an exhaustive list of leading book and articles. . . This book is very relevant to the present Indian situation . . .This book will provide valuable reading for mangers and policymakers in private and public sector organizations and also for those who are studying strategic change in organizations." -Management and Labour Studies "The authors provide a balanced overview of a range of different literatures dealing with (elements of) strategic change processes. . . . Shaping Strategic Change covers a broad range of important issues that arise when managers try to affect change. . . . The study by Pettigrew and coauthors contributes to our understanding of how top-driven changes can be successfully implemented in large organizations. It does not provide simple recipes, but recognizes the complexity, indeterminism, and simultaneity of strategic change process. In this respect, the model of receptive and non-receptive contexts offers many interesting and provocative ideas to scholars in this area." --Organization Studies "The review of the literature is thorough; the case material is fascinating; the issue that the authors come to grips with--effecting change in the National Health Service--is important. . . . The book is worth reading. Researchers and students will find it useful." --Times Higher Education Supplement "The book is rich in empirical observation and in its range of conceptual references. It presents a worthwhile contribution to understanding strategic change." --Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management "A thorough exercise that merits close study." --Long Range Planning In this major new book, Pettigrew, Ferlie, and McKee present their latest work on the processes and management of strategic change. In particular, they develop their model of receptive and non-receptive contexts for change. Both a powerful analytic device and a broad agenda for management, the model addresses the role and impact of such factors as environmental pressures for change, the quality and clarity of change goals and strategies, organizational cultures and inter-organizational relations supportive of change, availability of key people to lead change, and capability in managing change processes--turning "problems and panics" into sustainable action. Underpinning the model is an extraordinarily rich and multilayered analysis which draws and builds on the authors' research in the British National Health Service during a period of dramatic restructuring. Pettigrew and his colleagues use the case material to look at different kinds of strategic change, successful and less successful change processes, and the interconnection of factors to shape effective change. Shaping Strategic Change is indispensable reading for managers in private or public sector organizations and for anyone studying strategic management, organizational change, and public management.

A Health Care Reform Research Classic
By Pat
This collection of case studies in health care reform serves as a methodological model for studying health care reform. It demonstrates furthermore that underlying strategic change issues for health care are universal, even if delivery systems, ideology, and the socio-cultural and economic contexts vary. The studies are organized conceptually to investigate change phenomena such as creation and deterioration. In the end the findings from each of these studies is synthesized to produce a model of requirements for system change. Policy and organizational analysts can see from this analysis how to apply the approach to the situations of their respective health systems, so as to provide useful knowledge for their policy makers. Although this studies may have taken years to produce, the pace of health care reform warrants more studies of this type.

Changing Ideals in Modern Architecture, 1750-1950, by Peter Collins

Collins explains what Revivalism, Rationalism, Eclecticism, and Functionalism meant to those who practised them, examining the impact that social forces and the other arts and sciences had on architectural styles while recognizing the tectonic continuities that underlie the seeming ruptures between pre-modern, modern, and post-modern approaches to design. His work is infused with a deep sympathy for the classical spirit of the eighteenth century and he argued rigorously and passionately that Enlightenment ideas could be of real value to the architects of his generation, particularly since technology had made it possible to use them effectively. Collins's plea for sensitivity to tradition and the urban fabric while encouraging technological innovation and unprecedented programs makes his thought just as vital today as it was ahead of its time when first published. Collins had long wished to see an affordable, fully illustrated edition of his book and McGill-Queen's University Press and the McGill School of Architecture are proud to at long last fulfil this wish. The new edition includes a biographical sketch of Collins, a brief publication history of the work, and an introductory essay by Kenneth Frampton that discusses the importance of the work at the time it was first published and highlights its relevance for the architectural problems of today. Like the classic works of Hitchcock, Giedion, Pevsner, and Benevolo, Changing Ideals in Modern Architecture is essential reading and forms a striking contrast with other works on modernism, such as Reyner Banham's. It will be pertinent to all those interested in architectural history and theory, modern history, history of ideas, and aesthetics.

Review
"Even now, after so much of its substance has been elaborated by subsequent scholarship, Changing Ideals in Modern Architecture remains a pioneering achievement. It still provides an ideological history of the modern movement, covering an extremely wide trajectory and one which is animated throughout by a sharp critical bias. Its challenging originality stems from the way in which Collins constantly begs the question as to the fundamental nature of tectonic modernity as this has evolved over the last two centuries." Kenneth Frampton, from the Introduction

Peter Collins puts it all into a delicious nutshell
By Gavin Farrell
Peter Collins is one of the more erudite architectural writers you will ever come across. This book was published in 1965, barely pre-dating the publication of Venturi's influential "Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture." Now that I've read both, if I had to recommend one, I would recommend Peter Collins. While Venturi attacks Modernism by simply saying "its not complicated enough, I like complex architecture (and therefore you should too)" Collins goes much, much more in-depth.

The various ideas architects have desperately flung around since 1750 are all traced, dissected, and put into their social contexts. Rationalism, Romanticism, Ecclecticism, Historicism/Archeology, Classics versus Goths, the Moderns, the various analogies to other fields architects have attempted - it is all discussed. The book stops at 1950, but this does not detract from its relevance in 2004, as we can see that architects have continued to explore connections with other genres in order to create their various forms. It is important to realize what we're doing and if it has ever be done before - and - it all pretty much has been. Not to despair though, Collins keeps it an interesting read, if you do not chuckle at his wit every now and then, then your sense of humor is dead. It is important to read this critically, and I found myself only very occasionally disagreeing.

One of my favorite chapters, which is almost a six-page long joke, is entitled "Architecture and Gastronomy." (and yet - it is not a joke!)

The only criticism of the book is perhaps his less-intensive use of illustrations than he might have. Those that he does include however are well-chosen.

A very closely related work to this is J. Mordaunt Crook's 1987 "The Dilemma of Style: Architectural Ideas from the Picturesque to the Post Modern." Crook makes a book that attempts to do essentially the same thing, but has a slightly diferent perspective. I mention it because I believe these two, Crook and Collins, should be read by any architect worth their salt.

Kenneth Frampton writes a fairly interesting introduction to the 1998 edition, hopefully this book will continue to have stamina for future generations of architects.

Not bad, but a bit dated.
By Eitan
This really isn't a bad book, but there are two other books that are much more up to date and suitable for undergrads: An Introduction to Linguistic Typology and Introducing Language Typology (Cambridge Introductions to Language and Linguistics). I've used the former as part of the reading material for a first year intro to linguistics class, and the students praised it for its clarity and overall excellence. I intend to try out Moravcsik's book next year.

Interesting but Esoteric
By meeps
This book is a very intense look into linguistic typology, but also very fascinating. Anyone without a firm foundation in morphology, syntax and even phonetics will most likely find this book dull and completely confusing. I have no idea why my teacher assigned it to a largely non-linguistic major class, but this book was still more informative than that teacher. I would definitely recommend it, if only AFTER all lower level linguistics concepts are in place.

Excellent textbook!
By Richelieu
This is indeed a great book, especially for those without a strong background in the field, yet it is not boring at all for the initiated. Very up to date, theoretically sound and pedagogically effective, I recommend it strongly for those interested in linguistic typology.

An Essential Part of Any Library
By Mark Wylie
This is a book that truly merits the label "must reading." It played a role in changing my own thinking on politics and history when I first read it in the early 1990's. During my "College Republican" days, my view of Martin Luther King, Jr. was not especially favorable, and I was almost totally ignorant of the history and background of the civil rights movement. But after reading Taylor Branch's book, I could no longer shut my eyes to the hard truths to which he bears brilliant witness.
Martin Luther King is the central figure in Branch's narrative, but the book is much more than a biography, as befits its subtitle, "America in the King Years, 1954-63." For example, Branch begins his account with the stormy tenure of Vernon Johns as minister at Montgomery, AL's Dexter Avenue Baptist Church--at which church Johns was replaced by a young man still often known as "Mike" King. By broadening his account beyond King's own experiences, Branch accurately conveys how the civil rights movement was far more than just the activities of a few well-known leaders.
Branch's research would do credit to any professional historian. He conducted hundreds of interviews and worked with a vast amount of primary source material. His writing is compelling, repeatedly capturing the intensity of both public and private events. Even though the hardcover edition is over 900 pages, when I first read it I found it incredibly hard to put aside.

Authentic & Comprehensive History of Civil Rights Movement
By Barron Laycock
Presenting an authentic and comprehensive picture of the mammoth civil rights movement in the United States in the post WWII era is a daunting task, yet noted author and journalist Taylor Branch has succeeded masterfully with this, the first of a two-volume history of the struggle of blacks in America to find justice, equality and parity with the mainstream white society. Tracing the rise of the singular leader personified in the young Rev. Martin Luther King, Branch sets the stage for a wide range of events, personalities, and public issues. This is truly a wonderful read, fascinating, entertaining, and endlessly detailed in its description of people and events, and quite insightful in its chronicling of the fortune of those social forces that created, sustained, and accomplished the single most momentous feat of meaningful social action in our nation's contemporary history.
His range of subjects is necessarily wide and deep, and we find coverage of every aspect of the tumultuous struggle beginning in the deep South, and gradually working its way north and west until most of the urban northeast also surrendered to the battle cry for civil rights and justice under the law. In many respects this borders on being a biography of Martin Luther King and his times, yet Branch so extends his coverage of the eddies and currents of the movement itself that it appears to be by far the most comprehensive and fair-minded treatment of the civil rights movement published to date. Whether covering the issue of Martin Luther King's own personal life, his internal philosophical concerns, or his appetite for young white women, the reader is engaged with every element of this and a thousand other personalities, issues, and events that carved out the history of our country for almost twenty years.
One finds a very detailed of the Kennedy involvement in the movement, first as a purely political ploy to help to win the black vote in the extremely tight race for the Presidency in 1960, and then as an administration struggling to do what was right in the face of enormous social, political, and even economic opposition. Here too we find an absorbing account of how the FBI attempted to infiltrate and influence the movement, with J. Edgar Hoover's adroit political savvy and deep-seated racism causing great difficulty and a number of tribulations for the civil rights cause. The names and places and events described here are legion, and one gets the sense that anyone who had a conscience was involved, and many of the names mentioned later went on to greater accomplishment and further noteworthy contribution in their public lives and careers.
This, then, is a stupendous first volume of a wonderful two-volume history of the civil rights movement in the United States, and covers the period from the late 1950s when the first rumblings of the movement were sounded until just after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in Dallas in November of 1963. The second volume picks up the thread thereafter, extending out through the Johnson years and including aspects of the coalescence of the movement with the Vietnam anti-war protest. This is a wonderful book, and one I would consider essential reading for anyone with an interest in American history in the 20th century. I highly recommend both books, and I hope you appreciate reading them as much as I did. Enjoy!

Comprehensive and moving
By A Customer
I was bored by historical books. That was until I opened the first page of Taylor Branch's book. His ability to mix history, narrative and personal descriptions of the people involded in the civil rights movement made my reading extremely enjoyable, informative and captivating. At times I wad moved to tears and almost no book has had that effect on me so far. The book does not only focus on M.L. King himself and all the other characters involved made me feel part of a broader struggle for more humanity. It has been months since I read the book and my first impressions have remained as strong, I would advice it to anyone who wants to have fun, to be moved and learn at the same time. The civil rights movement is an essential part of history, you should read the book for your personal development, that is, development of your mind and of your heart. Just wonderful!

The Robert Browning volume in the 21st-Century Oxford Authors series is the first one-volume fully annotated edition of Browning to offer a wide selection of work written throughout Browning's career, from the very first poem he published, Pauline, to Asolando, the volume that was published on the day that he died. The text chosen is, wherever possible, the text of the poem as it was first published by Browning himself, and as a consequence the volume also constitutes a kind of biography. It reveals a poet who began as a bold experimentalist, and who continued to experiment throughout a writing career of more than fifty years. Browning is best known for his dramatic monologues, and the dramatic monologues are fully represented in this volume, but he was also a narrative poet, a poet of philosophical reflection, and a poet who fashioned an extraordinary variety of lyric measures. This volume reveals Browning as a far more versatile poet than he is often taken to be. There are two important prose items, an essay on Shelley and a letter to Ruskin which clarify Browning's intellectual stance. The Notes include brief headnotes to each poem followed by detailed annotation. Browning is often a difficult poet, and the notes are designed to assist the reader to arrive at a full understanding of the poems. The volume also includes a general introduction and a detailed chronology of Browning's life and times.

Great content, but sorely in need of a thorough review by a good Technical Editor
By Tom Betka
I've been working with C/C++ for a few years now, and with Qt for 1-2 years...mainly with Qt4 in embedded systems. I have a couple of the (very thorough) Qt4-based books that are available here on Amazon, and they are very good. In fact, they are almost TOO good from the standpoint that they nearly overwhelm you with information. But as reference material, they are extremely valuable. That being said however, when I saw that this book was dealing with Qt5 I wanted to go ahead and read it.

I read both of the reviews posted previous to mine, before buying the book. Then I purchased the Kindle version of this book and worked through the first couple of chapters. I can definitely see the criticism(s) noted in Keith Peter's review. It's pretty apparent that this book did not have a good Technical Editor to go through it, because there are a number of simple errors that should NOT have made it through. For example in chapter 2, here's one such example:

"...In other cases, we have to explicitly set the parent for a QObject child so that the parent can take over its ownership and manage the release of its memory. Hence, we pass the QObject parent, which is this, a MainWindow class to the constructor of QTimer."

It's unfortunate that the author doesn't point out that the "this" pointer is a pointer to the instance of a class that is currently being referenced. In other words, "this" isn't a class...it's a pointer to an instance of a class.

There are a number of similar such errors in the first two chapters, but overall the intent of the author is very good I think. But as I stated above, the book is in dire need of a good Technical Editor to go through and point this out to the author. I have served as a Technical Editor for a book on embedded systems, and it's not an easy task. It take many hours of work to go through a book such as this, but the result is well worth the effort.

So overall I'll want to come back and revisit this review after finishing the book, but for now I would have to give it a 4-stars due to poor editing. I would have to agree with Keith on this point. I would also add that you really do need to have some C++ experience before working through this book, as that is assumed--and it would also be most helpful to know something about Qt (and Qt Creator) before reading this book. While it's not absolutely imperative that you have used Qt before, there are many times that the author chooses not to go into elaborate detail on a take he asks you to perform. If you are at least somewhat experienced with Qt Creator you will have little problem getting things accomplished--but you might struggle a little but if you've never used the IDE before. On the other hand it will make you dig more for the answer(s), so I suppose that's not all bad.

By Keith Peters
This book is useful and I'm enjoying going through it and learning from it. My only criticism is the poor English used in the writing. This book was obviously not written by a native speaker. I'm not picking on the author. But I'm shocked that any editor would let so much through without any correction. There are points in the book where I just sit back and say, "What is he talking about???" Not because it's a difficult technical point, but because I can't parse the words in the sentence. But again, the overall content of the book is great. With better editing, it would be 5+ stars.

This approach is good for very beginners of Qt framework
By Jack-in-the-box
This book describes how you can build a Qt5 application step by step. This approach is good for very beginners of Qt framework, but it misses information delivery for the future reference because it does not give any further information on the Qt framework general.
