Mr. Nanji writes beautifully about that relentless and unanswerable question- the human condition. You can't help but love his unnamed quirky and amazingly self-aware and hilarious protagonist, a searcher who leaves London for British Columbia, encountering a myriad of real, raw, and rusty characters on his search for what? Truth? Peace? God? The reader never really finds out, though this reader didn't really need to know, she was happy just to be along for the journey. And journey she did.

Quite a Trip!!

This is a journey of the soul and I found I couldn’t put it down, Mr. Nanji does an outstanding job of making the character come alive to his readers. I truly felt that I was going down the rabbit hole with him. The scenes are wonderfully done and put you right in the middle of the craziness that is going on. Such fantastic encounters with various types of people, some good, some not so good, along the way make this book engrossing that I had to read on to see what would happen next. Kudos to Mr. Nanji, I loved it and will be recommending it to all!

A great read for 2016

I enjoyed reading memoirs of his life and memories too. Throughout all the stories the one constant is the number of friendships that the author built through his travels. You wonder what you should do next? I would suggest you do what you do best and continue to write stories and poetry. Native Lands by Nadir Nanji is a great read and I enjoyed it. Looking forward to reading more by this author. Well written.

Great and very readable book about quantum non-locality

Amazing story behind non-locality in physics. It's difficult to try to write a book about quantum mechanics - especially about such counterintuitive phenomenon as quantum entanglement - without using a single equation. It would be a great challenge for everyone who have at least basic technical knowledge on the subject. But George Musser handled it with ease. If this is your first confrontation with quantum entanglement, this book will be difficult to read. If this is your first book about quantum mechanics, then this book probably isn't for you and there are many different basic introductory books about QM for laymen you can choose from. This book is for people, who have at least basic knowledge in the field of quantum mechanics and general relativity and who want to learn what these theories means for spacetime structure and its very existence, when they are combined together. This includes science geeks, amateur physicists, people interested in quantum computing and quantum information, undergraduate and postgraduate students studying this field of physics, as well as some university professors from related fields, and in general all people who want to know, where all the struggles with interpretation of quantum mechanics come from. This book provides many different interpretations of quantum entanglement, but the basic idea is, that many different technical approaches to explain it lead to conclusion, that spacetime is an emergent feature of the universe, rather than its building block. Even though English is not my native language, this book was written in a simple English, so I haven't had any struggles to understand what I've read.

A Confusing Discussion of Nonlocality

George Musser delivers us an interesting look here at something called nonlocality in the physics world. Imagine two particles separated by a vast distance. Now imagine that when something is done to one of them, this action is instantly reflected in the other. Sounds spooky, doesn’t it. Actually this phenomenon is seen in black holes, the horizon problem in cosmology where galaxies separated by millions of light years look similar, and, of course, in entangled particles.

The author delves into the history of thought and philosophy concerning the idea of nonlocality. From Parmenides and Democritus of the fifth century B.C.E. and their conception of nature, through Aristotle, Rene Descartes, Newton, Hans Christian Orsted, Michael Faraday, and up to Einstein and other scientists of the twentieth century, we are given the history of thought on the subject. He then spends a bit of time reflecting on the work of many scientists in quantum mechanics and their discoveries and reactions to these strange phenomena.

On negative side, this is the second book I’ve read by Musser, and I find the same style of explanation, which, to me anyway, is somewhat confusing. I just have some difficulty in really getting any clear substance from the material. I think there is too much meandering through all the ideas relating to the concept of nonlocality, and in an attempt to use analogies to make thinks more clear, I actually get more confused.

The book was good in that it introduced the lay person to the incredible implications of nonlocality. However, the experiments that demonstrate the spooky action at a distance phenomena were not adequately explained, and the lay reader is left wondering why any scientist would believe in nonlocality. For example, what is a wave box? What does it do? How does it work?

The complete inside story of the WIld Weasels

This book gives the complete inside story - from the first F4 shot down by an SA-2 to the crash development program of equipment and tactics to their deployment on the battlefield. From the early days in Vietnam to the first Gulf War this book tells what it was like to joust with SAMS in the most dangerous mission in the Air Force! The "inside the cockpit" accounts by pilots who were there are truly hair-raising, and provide graphic testimony to the reason their unofficial motto was YGBSM! The only reason the book does not rate 5 stars is the first section regarding the crash development program is a bit tedious.

This book is a collection of first-person stories about a little known portion of the air war over North Vietnam. Specifically, it covers the hardware development and fighter tactics the USAF used against the enemy's surface-to-air missile(SAM)sites. Read what it feels like to have a 2,000 miles per hour missile, as big as a telephone pole, coming at you. It is amazing that any of the Weasel crews completed the required 100 missions before they could go home. The History Channel called these "Suicide Missions." Highly recommended.

Very hard to read.

I really love Sandrine books but this book was very disappointing. The Harder They Fall was like a high school drama series with no connection. People falling in and out of relationship in a blink of an eye. The plot was missing and although I know most of these guys from other books in the Shifter Series I felt like throwing my kindle away. There were too many relationships going on at once and many of these relationships was base on nothing more than I love you and I love you too, and the next day the relationship was over. It's hard to give an honest review when you love the author but why are these books written so differently from the other well written books like the Assassin/Shifters series. I have an headache now, I will read Into the Lyons Den again to see if I can remember who end up with whom in the Santorno Drama.

I have been a fan of Sandrine for over a year now maybe longer and this series has evolved in so many ways that I can’t walk away from it. As her fans know we are always waiting for announcements and release dates and tend to binge read. Let me put it to you like this, the book was live at midnight and I stayed up till 2:30am reading it.

We meet the Santorno /Youngblood family and catch up with them after their kidnapping by Izzy’s (Isabella) biological mother. Who let’s face it was an awful human being who only cared about herself and how much she get from people not matter the cost. We learn that Damon and Tyler are still together, Health and Caleb have also move forward in their relationship. Izzy and Jacob have dealt with the hurt and have let the negative go. Charlie is still with Steve and dedicated to her career. Mark and Tanner are still a couple, but we also meet new characters like Paul Greystone and Jay.

Such an incredible joy to read this book by the amazing Sandrine! To see the Santorno-Youngblood kids grow up and fall in love. Stefan and Jordan still as much in love as ever as their family grows. The blending of relationships is seamless with her writing, the characters so rich and full of life. I am intrigued by the ending...and am very much looking forward to the next one!

About the Author
Steven H. Zarit, PhD, is Professor and Head of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Pennsylvania State University, and is also Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Gerontology, Jönköping University, Jönköping, Sweden. He has conducted research on late-life issues, particularly family caregiving and adaptation for older adults. Dr. Zarit is a recipient of the Distinguished Career Contribution Award from the Gerontological Society of America.
 
Judy M. Zarit, PhD, has been in private practice in State College, Pennsylvania, since 1986. She specializes in neuropsychological assessment of dementia and clinical interventions with older adults. Dr. Zarit also provides consultation services to nursing homes and assisted-living facilities.

Harold Gortner focuses on public administration ethics theory and how it applies to the lives of managers operating in the middle ranges of public bureaucracy. Using a general review of the literature on public administration ethics and a comparison of that literature to the real-life experiences of civil service managers, he categorizes the literature and measures its relevance to the thought processes, decisions, and actions of individuals within a bureaucracy.

According to Gortner, the literature on public administration can be divided into five meaningful categories: philosophical discussions of ethics; professional aspects of ethics; personal characteristics and their influence on ethics; organizational dynamics and their influence on ethics; and legal aspects of ethics. Because an understanding of these five approaches to public administration is helpful in understanding the arguments that are presented, each is discussed at some length within the volume. Gortner then examines these categories in light of the real-life experiences of public managers, thereby helping the reader to understand which of the various ethical arguments are most meaningful to practicing managers, and why those particular approaches are useful or applicable to their ethical dilemmas. Gortner's effort to balance theory and practice will interest scholars and practitioners of public administration alike.

This well-written textbook is an introduction to the theory of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and its applications in digital signal and image processing. The DWT is presented by the author from a digital signal processing point of view. This book is mainly written for broad readership of graduate students and researchers in physics, computer science, and engineering with special interest in digital signal and image processing. The author demonstrates clearly the properties of the DWT by numerous examples and figures. All computations can be realized by MATLAB programs available at the website of this book.

The contents of this textbook is divided into three parts. The first part (with Chapters 2 – 7) has preliminary character and presents the essentials of digital signal processing (such as operations of discrete signals, convolution and correlation, Fourier analysis of discrete signals, z-transforms of discrete signals, finite impulse response (FIR) filters, and multirate digital signal processing).

The core of the book is the second part (with Chapters 8 – 14) which presents the theory of the DWT and some extended wavelet transforms. Since most of the concepts of the DWT are easy to understand by studying the Haar DWT, the author describes the Haar DWT first. Then some orthogonal DWT’s (such as Daubechies filters of length 4 and Coiflet filters of length 6) are designed. The often used biorthogonal DWT’s are presented too. Some implementation aspects of the DWT using typical filters are discussed. As extensions of DWT the author describes the discrete wavelet packet transform, discrete stationary wavelet transform, and dual-tree DWT. The dual-tree DWT provides good directional selectivity and is nearly shift-invariant.

In the last part (with Chapters 15 – 16), two of the major applications of the DWT are presented. The image compression of digital images (with short description of the image compression standard JPEG 2000) and signal denoising are examined.

Each chapter ends with a short summary and many exercises. Answers of selected exercises are given too. Doubtless, this nice book will stimulate the practical education in the theory of DWT and its applications.

A good, well-written read

Amy wakes up in a strange room. She’s locked in with a freezer full of food and a wardrobe of clothes which look like her own but are new. She’s been abducted by her stalker. We know this from the start. She’s in mourning for the love of her life and bumped into a man at a gig where she sang with her friend’s band – The Butterfly Effect. He’s creepy, manipulative and she regrets giving him any positive signals. There are two people looking out for her. One is Olga, her friend from the band; the other is her late boyfriend’s best mate, a man Olga can’t stand. Amy is conflicted.

This is an unusual ‘stalker story’ in that the abduction has already happened by the time we enter the narrative. We watch as Amy works out, with horror, what has gone on in her life and how difficult it is making choices of friends. I enjoyed the tension set up in the story and Amy’s initial denials of what she eventually finds to be the truth. A very good, well-written read.

The Butterfly Effect

This is a very tense psychological thriller. Amy wakes up in a strange locked room after being kidnapped. She recounts what led to her being there from her happy life to being stalked and losing her family and friends.

I read this in just two sittings, I just didn't want to put it down as I followed Any into her spiral of despair and how she planned to get out of it. The story is told in Amy's first person, so we are introduced to her past life as she recalls it. To me this made the story very insular and claustrophobic and kept me wanting to know more.

I'd say this is a good read, but it made me feel creeped out. Just what a good psychological thriller should do.

About the Author
David Berkman is one of the top jazz pianists in New York with seven records out under his own name. He has performed or recorded with countless jazz stars including Sonny Stitt, Joe Lovano, Eddie Henderson, Brian Blade,Dave Douglas, Chris Potter, etc. An in-demand jazz educator on three continents, he is an associate professor of music at Queens College in NY.

The best there is on Jazz Harmony

Finally found what I was looking for after all these years.

Let's start with the fact that you need a fundamental music knowledge to enter into the realm of jazz harmony. The book does start from the very beginning of I IV V I cadence, but if you're absolutely new to music chances are you wouldn't know what that means. I would say the prerequisite for this book is basic sight reading (treble clef and bass clef), major and minor scales, triads, and intermediate piano skill (which fortunately provided as one of the appendices).

The book is piano focused, which is excellent for all jazz pianists out there. All examples are written on grand staff and voiced using piano on the 2 CDs. Other instrument players will have to transpose the piano voicing into their own instrument which is not always possible if you want to copy exact voicing e.g. 8 note voicing in piano cannot be exactly replicated in guitar which only allows a maximum of 4 (or 5 if you use the thumb) finger note voicing.

Now let's get to the meat of the book. I finding a hard time to explain anything but saying this is it! I have nothing else to say. If you want to learn jazz harmony I haven't found and cannot recommend anything else but this book. I do have a library of jazz tutorial books but I cannot find a book on the same calibre and effectiveness compared to this one. It's kinda puzzling why this books only comes out in 2013. Well it's better late than never I guess. It would save me years of training had this book was available the first time I fell in love with jazz.

The book departs from a very basic I IV V cadence progressing to very advanced concepts. Surely there are other books out there which deliver the same material, but the additional star of this book belongs to the delivery. Dave's teaching flows very well and it makes sense. When I understand something, I remember it easily. He talks why and how harmony works, whereas other books talk about only which harmony works. And the book encourages you to apply the theory. Although the CDs are very clear, it feels like you just want to try it on the piano asap.

I have not much else to say. Despite a few typos here and there, and Track 32 on the CD is not what's written on the book, I find this book perfect regardless. So thank you Dave Berkman, I made a huge leap of progress in my jazz harmonic study thanks to your book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning practical jazz harmony.

Pianists: work through this book to expand your harmonies!

Plain and simple, Mr. David Berkman has authored a comprehensive textbook/workbook on hip, expressive, colorful, meaningful jazz piano harmony. If Mr. Herbie Hancock is reading my review, I will say, "you already know all this stuff". Many other pianists will benefit from this book's content, layout, examples and the two CD's.

His opening premise is that many many students he hears seem to play tunes with limited, predictable, unadventurous chord changes they learned from the Real Book. This book aims to correct that fault.

I love this book a lot. The writing style is personable and easy to get into. The organization and examples are totally clear and useful. Working through this book with an adventurous ear and spirit (plus maybe a detailed study of Mr. Berkman's playing or Eldar's playing or whoever you like), would help bring any pianist up to date and open up his or her harmonic palette.

Amazing Book!!!

After self-studying jazz theories for a while, I felt like "jazz" has thousands for rules that I could not understand them all. It was just too much for me.
Finally, this amazing book helps me understand them step-by-step, bit-by-bit. I can create my own voicing with modern sound that I like.
