Excellent resource

This book is one of very few giving advice on where to see Australia's unique mammalian fauna.
It is made up of three main sections. Split between the first and very last part is advice on watching mammals in general and travel tips. These are quite brief.
Then comes a detailed state by state overview of key mammal watching sites, pointing out key species that can ir might be seen at each. This is pretty good, though I would have found it better if accompanied by at least basic maps of each site. There are also additional boxed texts on seeing the most popular species, as well as bats or whales in each state.
The second half is a species by species overview of Australia's mammals, with comments on where each one might be seen. The latter is usually just a list of key spots/reserves, and in the case of elusive, small mammals unlikely to be actually seen, notes on their distribution.
Overall, the book's very ambitious scope means detail had to be cut back, but it is still a very useful resource and highly recommended.

Piri Thomas (1928 - 2011) was a writer and poet whose memoir "Down These Mean Streets" became a best-seller.The book describes his struggle for survival as a Puerto Rican/Cuban born and raised in the barrios of New York. It has been in print for 45 years. His other works include Savior, Savior Hold My Hand; Seven Long Times; and Stories from El Barrio. Thomas was involved with drugs, gang warfare and crime. While spending six years in prison, Thomas reflected on the teachings of his mother and father, and realized that a person is not born a criminal. Consequently he decided to use his street and prison know-how to reach at-risk youth, and to help them avoid a life of crime. Thomas was influential in the Nuyorican Movement which included poets Pedro Pietri, Miguel Algarin, and Giannina Braschi, who wrote of life in New York City using a mix of English and Spanish. Thomas traveled around the U.S., Central America and Europe, giving lectures and conducting workshops in colleges and universities. He was the subject of the film "Every Child is Born a Poet: The Life and Work of Piri Thomas" by Jonathan Robinson.

Excellent Book On Pre and Post Contact Mesoamerican Trade

Like the other book I reviewed today, this book is the only book I could find on this subject, which I articulated as, "What was trade like before the Spanish arrived in the New World?" Specifically, I was interested in seeing the extent of trade between the Valley of Mexico and the Mayan speaking areas to the South. This book doesn't really explore that topic, but it's quite definitive on the question of trade before, during and after the Spanish conquered the Aztecs and surrounding areas.

Along the way Hassig corrects what are some still common misconceptions about the relationship between the Spanish and Mesoamerica. The most interesting misconception that Hassig tackles is the idea that the Aztec Empire was somehow weak or defective, and that the weakness was intimately related to the conquest.

Hassig examines the pre-Columbian history of the Aztecs and argue, persuasively, that the Aztecs were a hegemonic, rather then territorial empire. Roughly put, it's the difference between the Roman Empire and the British Monarchy- with the Aztecs being Roman. The Aztec Empire was what you call a low energy/low extraction Empire- the Aztecs required less from it's subjects and in turn expended fewer resources in maintaining their Empire.

This "choice" was grounded in pre existing conditions in Mesoamerica: the geography, the lack of pack animals and reliance on human transportation and the need for the Aztecs to secure their food supply in an area where any growth in a city was cause for concern. The Aztecs were aided in their ascent by their prime position inside a cluster of lakes. The only transportation alternative for the Aztecs besides people were canoes, and the canoes could carry 50 times a human. Because the Aztecs were inside a lake, they were able to extend their economic "hinterland" from any point in the water surface. This allowed them to grow larger then competitors effectively by their combined military/location advantage.

As they expanded they used merchants as advance scouts and spies. After the Conquest, the combined impact of disease and new transportation alternatives (Donkeys and wagons) the use of human carriers declined but did not stop entirely for more then a century. Hassig notes that the impact of disease preceded the Spanish conquest, so that their conquest was timed at a point when there were relatively few children (already dead from disease) and more adults (more productive, fewer family members to support) so that in the years immediately after the conquest there was relative abundance.

However, as that first disease stuck generation aged, there were fewer workers and thus it was harder for the Spanish to "live off the land" per their desire.

Excerpt: Creating Doves

The technique for creating a dove is similar to that for creating a swan, but the dove has quite a different look. Doves have small round heads with short beaks. The neck is short and the chest is full and large. The dove is a universal symbol for love, so these doves holding wedding rings are perfect for a wedding or engagement celebration.

1. Begin to blow a sphere.
2. Use your thumb and index finger to work a small ball away from the top of the sphere. This is the dove’s head. 3. Use your thumb and index finger to slightly elongate the dove’s neck, leaving a large teardrop shape at the base of the neck for the dove’s body. Bend the head to a 90-degree angle. 4. Use your thumb and index finger to roll the head down to touch the neck. 5. Cool and remove the dove from the tube.
6. Pinch the open end closed and rewarm the closed end over the flame of an alcohol burner, then attach a small piece of warm Isomalt or sugar to form the tail. 7. Use your fingers to flatten and widen the tail. 8. Use room-temperature scissors to make indentations in the tail resembling feathers. 9. Pull a wing using the same technique as for pulling petals. Pull one side longer than the other to create a curve. 10. Use scissors to make short indentations in the long edge of the wing. Set aside. 11. Pull a second wing and use scissors to mark it with feather indentations. 12. Melt the wide edge of each wing slightly over the flame of an alcohol burner.
13. Attach the wings to the dove, facing downward, then bend the wings upward. 14. Use room-temperature scissors to cut a small triangle from a piece of red Isomalt or sugar. Warm the triangle over the flame of an alcohol burner and attach it to the head to form the beak. 15. Cut a small piece of red Isomalt or sugar and melt one end over the flame of an alcohol burner. Use the melted end to create eyes by dotting each side of the head. 16. Pull a thin, short piece of Isomalt or sugar by pulling and sliding it between your index finger and thumb. Cut it off from the main piece using room-temperature scissors, then warm both ends over the flame of an alcohol burner and bring the ends together to form a closed ring.
17. Pull another thin, short piece of Isomalt or sugar and bend it to form an open ring.
18. Place the open ring through the closed ring and join the ends of the open ring to close it and link the two rings together. 19. Using room-temperature scissors, cut a small piece of white Isomalt or sugar and melt one end over the flame of an alcohol burner.
20. Place a small amount of the melted white Isomalt or sugar on the bottom of the dove’s beak.
21. Immediately attach the rings to the melted Isomalt or sugar. 22. Store the completed piece in an airtight container or plastic bag with limestone, calcium carbonate, or silica gel.
Combine a pair of doves with a blown heart shape for a beautiful symbol of love.

Inspiring, informative and well-photographed

Sugar is one of the most exciting mediums there is for food crafting. The structure of it allows glass like manipulation to create amazing sculptural pieces. I first became interested in working with sugar when a good friend of mine was going to school to study pastry and sugar art. Learning about amezaiku which is Japanese lollipop art only solidified that interest.

The Art of the Confectioner- Sugarwork and Pastillage is meant for professional candy and pastry makers, but it also break the techniques down enough to be followed by the serious home cook who wants to try something new and exciting.

There are recipes for each technique, as well as lots of photographs to explain the steps. The book starts with the basic tools you'll need. However some tools are specific to techniques, so also look at the technique you want to see the tools you'll need for that project.

The methods of working with sugar include:

Pastillage- this is something like a sugar clay that can be worked much like polymer clays, it's allowed to air dry and can be airbrushed with food safe colors. It can be rolled and sculpted.
Sugar casting works to create solid transparent pieces. It's similar to any hard candy you may have made.
Sugar pulling- this is the method that created the gorgeous candy ribbons on the cover. It's also ideal for flowers
Blown Sugar- like blown glass, this creates delicate hollow ornaments and sculpture, and also uses the most specialized tools
There are also newer effects like net which creates lacy patterns in a sheet and pressed sugar which is the same way sugar eggs or sugar skulls are made.

Each technique has projects shown with step-by-step instructions. You will learn how to make molds for casting, how to texture pastillage, and how to blow shapes like doves for an incredibly lovely cake topper. There are also tips for painting the finished pieces. While some of the ingredients will have to be purchased online or at a specialty store, it's worth it.

There are lots of photographs which show the range of this medium. Fish swimming in coral, abstract works of art that look like glass and ornaments that look like vintage German glass.

I really recommend it, and think that sugar sculpting may be a micro-trend soon in food crafting. This book is over 300 pages of well written and photographed instructions, recipes and tips. It's a comprehensive course in itself.

Chef Ewald Notter has yet again produced an outstanding book. It is filled with so much information for both the beginner and advanced sugar artist. He does an outstanding job of explaining each step thoroughly and building upon them. I cannot think of any current sugar techniques that he did not cover. This is a fantasic resourse for anyone interested in pursuing sugar art.

If you think the world's great pieces of art only exist in private collections and museums, The Art of the Confectioner by Ewald Notter will set you straight. What talented sugar masters such as Notter and other professional confectioners can achieve by coloring, shaping and twisting pastilage and pulled sugar will have your jaw dropping in some chapters of this amazing guidebook. Your eyes will almost not believe that the handicraft you are seeing, ranging from dogs and flowers to underwater scenes of seashells and sea life have been spun from sugar and paste. This guidebook is as much a textbook on the art of confectionary as it is a collection that celebrates sweet edible artwork in itself. Makes you think - and rethink

Mitchell offers lucid and honest words to expose so much muddy thinking and imprecise statements of our age. While I may wish to quibble with his apparent suspicion of all forms of authority that ask individuals to take any concept on faith rather than through reason - I believe that every person has to ultimately take some axioms on faith in order to have any material with which to reason - I thoroughly enjoyed Mitchell's work. It has forced me to rethink my own words and to look at existence in a new light. This book deserves to be read and discussed by anyone who wants to think better and speak with more accuracy and authority.

Please reprint this book

One of the joys of reading is finding an out of print book or an author you've never heard of, and having the book change your life. Richard Mitchell's books are clear, hilarious, fascinating critiques of the decline and fall of Western Civilization. I first found Mitchell's Graves of Academe by accident in the library. I quickly read all his books, including The Gift of Fire, which is excellent. The latter is the only one I have not come to own through used books stores and sales. Unfortunately it is also the most moving and important and the one I most often want to lend out or quote to my students. I am always amazed when I reread Mitchell that, despite years of teaching, I had never heard of him. On the other hand, his ideas and advice are toxic to the educational extablishment and all hypocritical and unthinking aspects of our society, and I can understand why education schools everywhere would eschew him. If I had to recommend three authors to an aspiring teacher, they would be Mitchell, Kozol and Postman, in that order. I normally do not submit reviews, but anything to get this and other of Mitchell's books into other hands (or reprinted) is worth it.

Simple, elegant beliefs in a readable language

I've never read a book quite like this one. It manages to be scholarly but entertaining, educational but entertaining and . . . well, just plan good, cover to cover.
My favourite portion of the book covers Jesus' confrontation with the teachers of the law concerning a woman found in adultery. The author is straightforward in his approach to the situation and, by not bogging himself down with needless pedagogy and epistemology, shows the simple wisom of Jesus and how it can apply to us.
We all should read this.

Very Informative and Easy to Read and Remember

I needed to learn a lot about ancient Rome in a short amount of time for a project I was working on. DK Books are usually really good and showing a lot of pictures and getting a lot of information across in the least amount of technical text. This book did not disappoint. You're not going to find a lot of history on different emperors, but you will find tons of information on roman lifestyles, and that is what I needed. I was able to read it all in a single sitting.

First-rate first Confucius

This was the first translation of the Analects that I read. It has faults, but so too does every other translation, and there is no translation that reads more delightfully than this one does; Dawson may be the only really elegant writer of prose to have undertaken an Analects translation. Dawson's besetting sin is a flood of conjunctions and transitions which have no root in the original. Take the following for example:

"The wise delight in water, but the humane delight in mountains. For although the wise are active, the humane are at rest. And although the wise will find joy, the humane will have long life." Here the words "but" "for although" and "and although" are purely Dawson's creation: there is nothing correspoinding to them in the original.

But if this is the worst sin a translator has, we may breathe freely. Lau similarly--in fact to a far worse degree-overlards his translations with verbiage, and he cannot plead the excuse of elegance. Let's compare them. Here is Lau:

"A man is worthy of being a teacher who gets to know what is new by keeping fresh in his mind what he is already familiar with." 27

Would anyone reading that sentence remember it as something inspiring or exciting? And why can Lau not refrain from all the useless padding?

Here is Leys:

"He who by revising the old gets to know the new is fit to be a teacher." 17

A bit better--we don't quite fall alseep here at least--but "revise" is cold and, as we shall see, a strange choice.

And now Dawson:

"If by keeping the old warm one can provide understanding of the new, one is fit to be a teacher." 20

Is there a comparison? I can remember how exciting I found those words the first time I read them! The original has a concision of which English is incapable: "Warm old and know new, can be teacher indeed" would be a word-for-word attempt. Ten words--to Leys' 17, Dawson's 20, and Lau's (typically egregious) 27. "Know new" could mean either the man himself knowing the new, or providing such knowledge to others, or both; classical Chinese admits of these ambiguities, and it gets to the point where ambiguity becomes greater precision, as the knowledge here can be conceived of as communal and indivisible. Dawson has taken a few liberties; we could probably not justify "provide understanding" from a strict analysis of the original, although even here a defence could be mounted, for the Chinese word "knowledge" or "know" includes the sense of wisdom as well. But "keep warm" keeps the "warm" in the sentence, which neither Lau nor Leys seems interested in. Yet it is important! The soul of the Analects is alive in this translation as it is not in the others.

This book is not equipped with much in the way of scholarly or philological notes, but there are enough notes to clear up the obvious problems. I would strongly recommend this as a first Analects; it's better simply to enjoy and mull over the words themselves without getting caught up in the web of secondary concerns that heavily annotated books tend to drift into. The only really good translation is five or six translations read side by side, for comparison, along with the original, but starting with this one would be the most enjoyable way to get into the world of Confucius.

Before purchasing this book, one needs to ask themselves why they want it. If you are purchasing this book to perform a comparitive review on the contextual issues involved with the translation of ancient Chinese for the modern scholar, you will likely be disappointed.

However, if you are simply trying to familiarize yourself with an ancient philosophy of the Far East, this book will do nicely. If you are able to focus on the ideas rather than the grammar, you will be pleased. This book contains a wealth of common sense virtues and would be an absolute "must" for an aspiring political scientist, as it contains a healthy dose of political savvy.

Finally, the reader must keep in mind while reading this that Confucianism did not take hold for many years after Master Kong's death. Such is the way of all wisdom.
