Losing Ground

Daniel Way continues his run on Ghost Rider here in this second volume of his GR work.

Pretty quickly it becomes apparent that Way has a major problem happening. The particular problem is the fact that Way hasn't figured out how to make Johnny Blaze the man a very interesting person. Way's Lucifer is entertaining enough and he seems to be able to insert solid supporting characters (such as the small town Illinois sheriff that pops up here), and even his Ghost Rider is starting to improve, but Blaze remains a dour (and rather dense) bore. By the end of the eleventh issue Johnny is having the same problems and going about solving them in the same unsuccessful ways. It gets monotaneous and, at times, is a bit of a chore to read. If Way doesn't start to give Blaze some development, evolution or forward momentum soon, the book will continue to slide downward.

The art here is handled by Richard Corben and the team of Mark Texeira/Javier Saltares. Corben's contribution is, simply, distracting and really pulls Way's weaknesses as a writer into focus. One notices that without Texeira there really isn't as much to prop the book up as appears. Texeira and Saltares really seem to make the book what it is. They just make it work. Their art gives it a distinctness and flavor that Way's writing doesn't. It's quite southern gothic-y. Even when Way does a bit of a Marvel Civil War tie-in, Tex/Saltares' art makes it seem as if the title never leaves its self-contained world.

As in the previous volume, Ghost Rider fights Lucifer with much punching and kicking. Texeira and Saltares' art makes it work, but, all in all, the title is already seeming like it's running out of steam.

More boring than anything else

Daniel Way's re-launched run on Ghost Rider hasn't been anything special, and The Life & Death of Johnny Blaze is no different. Here, we learn some more about Johnny's time in Hell, before he finds himself accused of some vicious murders. Besides some attempts to tie into marvel's mega Civil War event, that's really all there is to this second TPB, which continues Way's unbelievably boring take on the character. Even though the TPB itself isn't that long, it feels like it is, mostly thanks to Way, who helped make his runs on various other mainstream Marvel titles like Wolverine become yawn-fests. What is worth noting about The Life & Death of Johnny Blaze is that this TPB features some artwork from the legendary Richard Corben, who it is always a pleasure to see in action. The usual art team of Javier Salteres and Mark Texiera are here too, and they're work is about what you'd expect by now, which isn't vad in the least. Other than the art by Richard Corben, there's not really much reason to check this out unless you've been a fan of Way's take on Ghost Rider. Other than that though, this can be avoided.

not that great

The story has a few good moments, but is overall forgetable. The artwork is definately not in the same category as the other novels in this series. Get it only to complete the series if you must.

Excellent "How To" for Optical Designers

In the acknowledgements the authors state they "wanted to create a book in the field of optical system design that was clear and easy to understand" - Mission accomplished!

This book is indeed easy to understand but nevertheless provides detailed explanations of how to design an optical system. While not deeply mathematical there are sufficent formulaes provided (with examples) so you can understand what to do and how to do it. If you were puzzled as to why achromatic lenses are used you won't be after you read this book. The book also explains how distortion occurs and how to get rid of it. Also there are sections on mechanical components such as lens mounting etc. The book also explains how to use typical optical design software.

My only (slight) dissapointment was the relatively few descriptions of typical systems - but using the book you could design these from first principles. Also to be fair there are so many designs out there that this is probabaly asking too much.

I bought this book because as an electronics engineer I did not know enough about optical systems to be able to design one. Reading this book and downloading some freeware optical design software (and using the book to help understand the outputs) has solved that problem

One of the best technical books I own

Having studied the comments on four other books before holding my breath and purchasing "Optical System Design," I was still worried that it would turn out to be a physics-oriented treatment of the subject despite the comments.

I was happily surprised.

Not only is this book well- and often humorously-written (to me at least), it has memorable explanations which make applying the knowledge easier.

In particular, the excellent treatment throughout the book on the six major third-order aberrations' causes has helped me use my optical design tools more correctly. I do not guess about specific changes, I know what to expect when making a change in the design.

I have found over the years that purchasing two texts on a topic is a good strategy. One must be a "thick book," like "Optical System Design," and the other a "thin book" which serves as a map. I'm still looking for the "thin" compliment to OD, but its layout and index are good enough that I will probably not follow my normal pattern.

a bit disappointed

Based on other reviews, you expect a highly polished product - full of glossy enlightening diagrams and explanations. The book is OK and conveys many important notions of optics adequately, especially if you have some background knowledge. However, at times, it feels like a potpourri, too wide to be under control and lacking in rigor. The authors present a few formulas at times and assure us that they could write many more "if they wanted to". However, this book really feels like the work of practitioners - a bit thin on the theory side. Many figures have a printing quality too low to be readable (so much for the Nyquist criteria, which by no coincidence is presented quite poorly) and the chapter on diffractive optics is a didactic catastrophe. Just because a book has been around for a long time and is respected in the field doesn't mean that it can't be improved upon. Still, I find myself reading the book time and again. The book will complement nicely Born and Wolf, which lies at the other extreme.

Never talk about robot technology before you read this play

Capek created the word "robot" with his brother resulting the play "R.U.R.". Capek foresaw the world of 21st century and gave a warning so much ahead of time. This is one book everyone should read before they talk about robot technology and its benefit. T.K.OHSKA

I think K. Capek is a visionary! The plays were written a while ago, but they will be modern in hundreds years from now.

While these plays by Karel Capek were written decades ago, they are still timely and are still being produced to this day. I was fortunate enough to have seen "Vec Makropulos" live in Prague Theater and it was widely enjoyed by the audience. Many of Capek's works question our existence and even though he uses insects as characters, they are not science fiction in the usual way of aliens come to earth, but more as a way of questioning why we are here and what is to become of the human race. Capek coined the word "robot" to serve as machines that morph into beings that begin to take over their human creators.

Finally, a good book on basic Android development!

Pros:
- Things are explained before, when, and after they are done.
- Parameters are usually explained, at least in passing.
- Chapters are bite-sized, each explaining a concept.
- Example projects with easy, step-by-step instructions are in nearly every chapter.
- Lots of screenshots to help you follow along.

Cons:
- (Minor) Writing style can be awkward at times.

I've been looking for a good book on Android. It's hard as almost all are out of date shortly after publication, and most of them say "do this now do that" and expect you to learn from doing. Some explain, but the explanations are more of the approach and what will be done, rather than why each thing is being done or why it is used over alternative approaches.

Luckily, i found this book. Originally, i ignored the it due to the stupid cover design (no, really, and yes, i know) and came to it later. Well, at first i had found the Android 5 edition (Android Studio Development Essentials: Android 5 Edition). Amazon lists the date (there) of the first edition (even though they were selling the second edition) and Techtopia has the entire second edition online. (Even though there are ads to purchase it, i confirmed with the publisher that it is the full edition.) Anyway, the book looked good. So, i emailed the publisher to find out if there was an updated version. Well, the author was working on it just then, and it was becoming available shortly afterward. Sweet.

From a technical perspective, this book is far above the competition. It explains why things are done (sometimes in the first half of the chapter, sometimes in another chapter.) Chapters are bite-sized around specific topics, and there is clear progression. Examples are explained before being done, then during and/or afterward. Rationale is explained, and other methods to achieve the same goal are either mentioned or given as examples. For example, there are three ways to add views (aka widgets) to an Activity: dragging and dropping, editing the xml, or in code. There's a chapter on each of these, each has examples projects, and he lists the pros and cons of each approach.

Parameters to calls are usually explained, at least in passing, even mentioning things like why a self-reference is passed. Most books skip the unimportant parameters, and this book doesn't dwell on them either. However, they are usually mentioned, so you get a good feeling about what is going on.

For all its good though, the writing style leaves what to be desired. The sentences can sound awkward and there are some odd word choices. For example, in the Android 5 edition, "whilst" is used instead of while, though this is no longer the case in the Android 6 edition. There's some sentences i had to read twice to understand. (Well, it's not _that_ bad, but enough to comment about.) Nonetheless, they're information packed. And, at $10 for the ebook, i don't even care that much. The book is a steal.

I sent in a couple typos that have been corrected in the latest edition. The publisher is very responsive, and ultimately sent me the Android 6 edition. Of course, i was asked to continue sending in typos with makes me even happier. You mean someone cares? :) (FWIW, i was not asked to leave a review. I am leaving one because i want to. I'm so excited i found this book.)

If you're looking for an Android book and want to understand what is going on, get this book. For $10, its a steal. And you can preview the entire Android 5 edition on Techtopia should you so desire.

Best book for the new Android 6 out there - It is a Unicorn of this kind!!!!!

I bought few Android books for the new Android 6, I would say that I love this book, I am well-grounded Android Engineer and this book goes to the main things that Android provides in its new API. You will find complete projects, rich examples building sophisticated UI and easy to follow codes. You can be an apprentice or expert on Android, BUT, let me tell you that you won't regret buying this book, It is a Unicorn of this kind.

The heart of the book is an annotated version of The Wizard of Oz that highlights the possible political and monetary symbolism in the book by relating characters, settings, and incidents in it to the historical events and figures of the 1890s, the decade in which Baum wrote his story. Dighe simultaneously values the leading political interpretations of Oz as useful and creative teaching tools, and consolidates them in a sympathetic fashion; yet he rejects the commonly held, and by now well-debunked, view that those interpretations reflect Baum's likely motivations in writing the book. The result is a unique way for readers to acquaint themselves with a classic of children's literature that is a bit different and darker than the better-known film version.

Students of history and economics will find two great stories: the dramatic rise and fall of monetary populism and William Jennings Bryan and the original rendering of a childhood story that they know and love. This study draws on several worthy versions of the Oz-as-Populist-parable thesis, but it also separates the reading of Baum's book in this manner from Baum's original intentions. Despite an incongruence with Baum's intent, reading the story as a parable continues to provide a remarkable window into the historical events of the 1890s and, thus, constitutes a tremendous teaching tool for historians, economists, and political scientists. Dighe also includes a primer on gold, silver, and the American monetary system, as well as a brief history of the Populist movement.

RANJIT S. DIGHE is Assistant Professor of Economics at the State University of New York at Oswego. His specialty is American macroeconomic history, and he has written extensively on American labor markets between the world wars.

Political and Financial Allegory in Baum's Classic.

This book is offered as a teaching tool on the history and economic issues of the 1890's.

Mr.Dighe chronicles the interpretations of "The Wizard of Oz" as imagery of politics and money by various writers starting with Henry Littlefield in 1964.

The author cautions that there are subtle differences between the movie and Mr. Baum's book. The color of Dorothy's shoes is one example.

Mr. Baum's political leanings are a relevant topic of this book. They are basically an unknown. Mr. Dighe suggests that Mr. Baum probably didn't intentionally write "The Wizard of Oz" as political/economic allegory. But the book fills that role surprisingly well!

The first chapter explains money and national finances in easy terms. Some of the subjects in that vein are; the gold standard, gold reserve, and fiat money. They are all efficiently defined.

The story of "The Wizard of Oz" is printed in this book accompanied by numerous footnotes that are educational and interesting. Those footnotes detail some of the interpretations from authors like Henry Littlefield, Hugh Rockoff, and Ranjit Dighe himself among others.

These interpretations are speculative, but some of them are glaringly obvious. The green in Oz's temple for the color of money is one.

He includes William Jennings Bryan's speech at the end of the book. I have mixed feelings on Mr. Bryan. While he advocated the federal income tax(I don't care for that)he has his spot in history that was well-earned by his presidential campaigns and eloquent speeches.

This book addresses a fascinating topic. The question of whether L.Frank Baum intended for his book to serve as an allegory for the politics of the 1890's is one that each reader will have to answer for themselves.

Excellent Classroom Source

Ranjit S. Dighe's coverage of Baum's Wizard of Oz as an allegory is well designed as a teaching source for Populism.

I found his chapter on the historical background of this period very helpful in understanding this complicated period. More importantly, the chapter that includes the original story with annotations that identify the symbolism is exactly what a researcher is looking for. References to Littlefield's interpretation and Bryan's "Cross of Gold" speech makes this book a complete source for introducing this parable to history or economic students.

Good background information

Great background on a subject that escapes most history textbooks. The author takes a "middle ground" and asserts that Baum is not really taking an active stance on the Gold/Silver standard, but merely using analogies from the political climate at the times. The theory makes sense, but a deep reading of the Wizard of Oz then seems to take on merely academic curiosity.

5 stars for the background of the story, but less 1 star for the seemingly academic (pointless??) analysis of this nice story as it relates to the Gold/Siver standard.

Of course, other writers have completely divergent opinions on Baum and his writings, so I would also get some books by those authors to even out the analysis a bit.
