The Black Cloud (Earth menaced

In 1964, astrophysicists on earth become aware of an immense cloud of gas that is heading for the solar system. The cloud, if interposed between the sun and the earth, could wipe out most of the life on earth by blocking solar radiation and ending photosynthesis. A cadre of astronomers and other scientists is drawn together in Nortonstowe, England, to study the cloud and report to the British government about the consequences of its presence.

Excellent science fiction and real science of consciousness
By Paul L. Nunez
The Amazon site associated with a different printing contains many excellent reviews of The Black Cloud by British astronomer Fred Hoyle, my favorite science fiction story that I have re-read many times. Here I focus on some of the philosophical implications of this classic 1957 novel to modern studies of consciousness. Hoyle's novel stimulated the interests of two historical figures in a personal and professional relationship at the time: physicist Wolfgang Pauli and psychologist Carl Jung. As described in Hoyle's autobiography Home Is Where the Wind Blows: Chapters from a Cosmologist's Life, Pauli later told Hoyle that he discussed the philosophical implications of the novel with Jung and thought the novel was "better than your astronomical work."

In Hoyle's novel, a black cloud of matter with diameter larger than the earth-sun separation approaches our solar system. The heroic scientists make repeated attempts to study its physical properties by probing the cloud with electromagnetic signals of different frequencies, resulting in cloud behavior in apparent violation of known physical laws. After eliminating all other possibilities, the scientists are forced to an astounding conclusion: the cloud is intelligent! The scientist's next question is whether the cloud contains a single consciousness or many little conscious entities. They decide that the cloud has developed highly effective means of internal communication by electromagnetic fields. Each small part of the cloud is able to send signals to other parts in select frequency bands. The imagined process is analogous to the internet, but with a large fraction of the earth's population on-line at all times and rapidly sending messages to an ever changing subset of recipients.

The scientists decide that because the rate of information transfer between all parts of the cloud is so high, the sub-clouds can not be considered as having separate consciousnesses. Any thoughts or emotions experienced by a sub-cloud are assumed to be quickly and fully transmitted to many other sub-clouds. Thus the black cloud is deemed to contain a single global consciousness. Individual sub-clouds might be concerned with tasks like celestial navigation, memory storage, internal regulation of bodily functions and so forth; however, for the cloud to behave as a single mind, the sub-clouds must work in concert. Neuroscientists now refer to the analogous brain processes as functional segregation and functional integration. Different brain regions do different things; they are segregated. At the same time, they cooperate to yield a unified behavior and (apparent) unified consciousness so they are integrated. The question of how this can be accomplished in human brains, known as the binding problem in neuroscience, is discussed many places, including my new book (2010). The work of Benjamin Libet, Mind Time: The Temporal Factor in Consciousness (Perspectives in Cognitive Neuroscience), shows that our subjective feeling of the present actually refers to times about ½ second in the past; consciousness is distributed over time. Modern neuroscience studies (EEG, etc) show that consciousness is also distributed over space within the brain as implied in Hoyle's novel. Still another excellent yarn by Hoyle having to do with the apparent relationship of consciousness to information is October the First Is Too Late. Although these are books of fiction, Hoyle makes it quite clear in his comments that he is quite serious about the ideas presented.

The Barometer Handbook: A Modern Look at Barometers and Applications of Barometric Pressure, by David Burch

An in-depth look at barometers and applications of barometric pressure
by the author of Modern Marine Weather.

The barometer remains the most important tool for evaluating and predicting the weather. This book explains why knowing accurate values of the atmospheric pressure can improve this process and benefit all applications.

Ways to evaluate and calibrate aneroid and electronic barometers using readily available data by Internet or telephone are clearly described. Tactical applications to marine navigation are covered. The book also includes worldwide average monthly pressures and their standard deviations

With the exception of trained meteorological crews, barometers in the past were used at sea primarily to learn if the pressure was going up or down, and whether it was doing this rapidly or slowly. And from this we made an educated guess of a likely consequence, usually in conjunction with other observations. Outside of professional marine use, little effort was made to know the true pressure for several reasons. We did not know what to do with it if we had it, and more often we could not get it if we wanted it, because most barometers were not calibrated.

This has changed. We now have many valuable applications of accurate pressure, and we also have affordable ways to get it, and we have convenient ways to prove our instruments work properly.

The main goal of this book is to show how all this comes about, and to give more insight into this fascinating, venerable instrument that has been with us for 150 years. Another goal is to introduce users to the new breed of electronic devices that are in the process of revolutionizing how we do weather at sea. We also re-introduce mariners to several classic aneroid instruments that are highly accurate and tested at sea for over 70 years, and why we benefit from having both a calibrated aneroid and an electronic barometer on board.

–––––

"After the thermometer, the barometer is most fundamental of weather instruments, and The Barometer Handbook takes the reader on an entertaining and informative trip through the history and use of this critical tool and provides a look at how barometric pressure effects climate and our weather." — Peter Isler, two-time America's Cup winning navigator.

–––––

"Like a rock star, David Burch is producing hit after hit! His latest piece, The Barometer Handbook is a first. It is the only comprehensive book on barometers that a mariner can refer to that will ensure how important it is to not only have a barometer when coastal or blue water cruising, but to be able to maintain and update its accuracy. The Barometer Handbook is the second book alongside his Modern Marine Weather that can serve as booksends for Bowditch." — Lee Chesneau, senior marine forecaster, Ocean Prediction Center, NWS (Retired).

–––––

"This is great stuff. It's the kind of book I wish I had when I started my career." — Christopher Hampel, Calibration Scientist, Barometry, Weather and Environmental Monitoring, Environment Canada.

–––––

"Yet another brilliant book from the hand and mind of Dr David Burch. I loved reading this book." — Kenn Batt, Manager, Canberra Meteorological Office, Bureau of Meteorology, Canberra ACT Australia.

A Gold Mine
By J. Weaver
Few are the books that address the very heart of a wide-ranging subject; even fewer in my opinion are those that are so well organized and researched, and written by an acknowledged expert in an eminently interesting and readable style, that they carry us effortlessly down the road to an excellent grounding in the subject. And perhaps even more importantly, bridge the gap between theory and practicality, between mere interesting facts and usefulness. I find The Barometer Handbook to be just such a book.

I am an avid sailor, an airline pilot by trade, and was briefly acquainted with the author's reputation and several of his books when I found this one, newly published in 2009. With interests in navigation and meteorology, I picked the book up hopeful that it would be well written and informative.

It is more, very much more. I could not put it down, and it cost me a couple of very late nights. If you have any interest at all in the weather, whether just casual or from a more academic perspective, this book is required reading. If you are an interested sailor or pilot, living and working in the weather and very much concerned with the forecast, put it at the very top of your list. Or if instead you have an interest in the barometer as an instrument - its development, its workings, its modern construction and uses - you cannot do without this book.

Many of us know that atmospheric pressure and its measurement are at the heart of all meteorology. But it becomes obvious in reading the book that it would be a great mistake to assume that having a simple barometer and knowing how to use it are of little value in modern times, given the easy availability over the internet of weather charts with actual and predicted frontal systems, winds, and pressure readings for nearly any area on earth.

It is no accident that you will find an accurate barometer on every ship, whether military or civilian. The instrument is clearly no mere holdover from sailing ship days, nor a quaint decoration. For weather charts and predictions are one thing: actual conditions are another. The barometer allows you to judge the accuracy of the forecasts, past and present, as well as help you see and prepare for what is coming to your specific location, which may well be quite different than the forecast for your general area. Mr. Burch is very convincing in his assertion that a blind reliance on technology is in no way a substitute for acquiring and understanding how to use your own information. I am convinced that no tool is better suited for this than a good barometer, and The Barometer Handbook to explain how to use it.

It is the author's unspoken enthusiasm for the subject and his evident dedication that make it clear just how useful this knowledge is to us. Excellent background information make up the first two chapters - Introduction and Atmospheric Pressure; the next two are Reading and Care of Barometers and Barometer Calibration, and these four chapters alone are worth the cost of the book, giving an in-depth understanding of the instrument and its background. These are followed by Barometers & Weather Forecasting, the Role of Accurate Pressure in Marine Weather, and Other Roles of Atmospheric Pressure - all fabulous reading, and true to the author's other books, expertly informative. Barometer Selection - invaluable - then Altimeters, and Worldwide Monthly Mean Pressures are the final three chapters, with even more information at your fingertips in the Appendices. The book is a gold mine, and a fascinating one at that.

A must have book
By Kenn Batt
Yet another brilliant book from the hand and mind of Dr David Burch. I loved reading this book.

Having read a number of books on barometry over the years, I have to admit that this book has to be the most useful particularly from a weather practitioner's perspective. In fact there is a bit for everyone who has an interest in atmospheric pressure and weather in general.

Commencing with a "potted history" of barometry and the principles of atmospheric pressure in Chapers One and Two. David moves into the " nuts and bolts" of pressure and barometers in Chapters Three, Four, Five and Six. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on calibration and the role of accurate pressure in marine weather. Barometer calibration has long been an overlooked side of the barometer equation.

The contents of Chapter Seven are an eye opener for readers interested in the other roles of pressure. From the medical to the sporting side, David has done a great deal of research in order to give the reader a better understanding of the role of atmospheric pressure in areas other than weather forecasting.

The outstanding chapter would have to be Chapter Eight on Barometer Selection. This would appeal to anyone who has to make the ultimate decision on what barometer would be the best value for money for their vessel or home. I didn't realise until reading this chapter just what a wonderful instrument the Fischer aneroid barometer is for the money that I paid for it from Starpath.

In Chapter Nine, David covers the subject of altimetry in great detail. This chapter will of course appeal to the aviator and to the reader who is after a well written, accurate and easy to understand explanation of this complex topic.

An up-to-date treatment of average mean sea level pressure charts is presented in Chapter Ten. This work has long been awaited outside of the world of the professional meteorologist working for a National Weather Service. David presents this in a way that any reader can understand and use.

In Further Reading, David presents a listing of publications that are relatively easy to obtain and wide-ranging which caters for the tastes of all readers.

The Appendices are first rate and would be extremely useful to all "users of pressure"

In all I loved reading this book. David Burch is to be congratulated on yet another first class publication. This book will be the ideal companion to his book Modern Marine Weather. This Handbook will appeal to anyone who is interested in the subject of barometry.

Vital for calibrating new or old barometers
By Carlos Gibran
Great book! Vital details about how to set and calibrate a barometer. This is something that I struggled with in the past because i never understood how to do it.

I also never realized how powerful a weather tool the digital barometer/temp/humidity units are. Way more accurate for predicting the weather than just a stand alone barometer.

Also good descriptions and analysis of both analog and digital barographs. Sadly a good digital barograph will set you back hundreds of dollars, (mind you a good analog barometer will also do that... ;o)

Writings for a Liberation Psychology, by Ignacio Martin-Baro

"In your country," Ignacio Martín-Baró remarked to a North American colleague, "it's publish or perish. In ours, it's publish and perish." In November 1989 a Salvadoran death squad extinguished his eloquent voice, raised so often and so passionately against oppression in his adopted country. A Spanish-born Jesuit priest trained in psychology at the University of Chicago, Martín-Baró devoted much of his career to making psychology speak to the community as well as to the individual. This collection of his writings, the first in English translation, clarifies Martín-Baró's importance in Latin American psychology and reveals a major force in the field of social theory.

Gathering essays from an array of professional journals, this volume introduces readers to the questions and concerns that shaped Martín-Baró's thinking over several decades: the psychological dimensions of political repression, the impact of violence and trauma on child development and mental health, the use of psychology for political ends, religion as a tool of ideology, and defining the "real" and the "normal" under conditions of state-sponsored violence and oppression, among others. Though grounded in the harsh realities of civil conflict in Central America, these essays have broad relevance in a world where political and social turmoil determines the conditions of daily life for so many. In them we encounter Martín-Baró's humane, impassioned voice, reaffirming the essential connections among mental health, human rights, and the struggle against injustice. His analysis of contemporary social problems, and of the failure of the social sciences to address those problems, permits us to understand not only the substance of his contribution to social thought but also his lifelong commitment to the campesinos of El Salvador.

From Library Journal
Martin-Baro was a Spanish-born Jesuit priest and a University of Chicago-trained psychologist, teacher, and administrator at El Salvador's Universidad Centroamericana. Along with five other Jesuits, their housekeeper, and her teenaged daughter, he was murdered by soldiers in November 1989. The murders outraged the world. Having lived in a country where poverty and government oppression was the norm, Martin-Baro's aim in his work and writing was always human liberation. For the first translation of his writings into English, the editors have selected various journal articles from his long career. Most poignantly, Martin-Baro argues that traditional psychology's image of the human person is falsely abstract and fails to consider the real-life social and economic conditions that form people. Not in the line of traditional social psychology, these essays nonetheless offer an important argument from an important man. Recommended especially for academic collections in psychology or social theory.
John Moryl, Yeshiva Univ. Lib., New York

Review
These essays touch on religion as a tool of ideology, the meaning of work and the way in which reality becomes fragmented in a politically repressed society...Those who worked to bring forth these essays have added a measure of justice to his life. (Richard Higgins Boston Globe)

Martín-Baró's essays are...characterized by a concreteness and a passion for justice, and they offer tremendous insights into Salvadoran society as well as the struggle for liberation. (Terry Coonan Human Rights Quarterly)

Adrianne Aron and Shawn Corne's excellent introduction contextualizes the volume, both within the Salvadoran peasant communities with whom much of Martín-Baró's work was developed and within the academic/intellectual communities to whom it is addressed. The chapters are organized around three major themes, which are, arguably, the major dimensions along which Martín-Baró's work developed: political psychology, war and trauma, and "de-ideologizing" reality. The selections demonstrate his contributions to social psychology as well as his intense involvement in the social reality of his adoptive country, El Salvador...[This is an] excellent volume. It is required reading for psychologists seeking a more critical psychology--one that takes responsibility for its social position and privilege, and challenges the status quo. It is an equally important resource for those who seek ideas and examples for developing "indigenous psychology" from the base of marginalized people's lives, in coalition with them. (M. Brinton Lykes World Psychology)

Review
Reveals the workings of a mind that was probing and humane, wide-ranging in interests and passionate in concerns, and dedicated with a rare combination of intelligence and heroism to the challenge his work sets forth to construct a new person in a new society. (Noam Chomsky, MIT)

Canonize This Man, Please
By Layli Phillips
Ignacio Martin-Baro is probably better known in the U.S. as one of the slain Jesuit priests of El Salvador than as the ingenious psychologist that he was. Aron and Corne do U.S. psychologists, who are more often than not barred by their lack of facility with the Spanish language from a large body of important psychological literature, a huge favor by editing this carefully chosen and lovingly prepared volume of his translated works. Because the writings they have selected span the period from 1974, shortly before Martin-Baro initiated graduate work at the University of Chicago, to 1989, when he was murdered, we as readers are able to observe the maturation of his perspective as well as the many ways he applied his psychological knowledge and training in what can only be described as a "limit situation"-- namely, El Salvador in the late l970s through the mid 1980s. In these works, Martin-Baro addressed several themes of increasing global significance, including the effects political repression on the human psyche, the effects of war on children, the relation between religious ideology and political activity, and the nature of industrial psychology from the perspective of the under- and unemployed. Of greatest significance to psychologists, however, were his overarching themes, namely, the collusive role of mainstream psychology in human oppression and the necessary role of the psychologist in human liberation. Borrowing from Freire's famed concept of conscientizacao, Martin-Baro demonstrated how psychologists can act as agents of the development of critical consciousness, both through their nurturance of individuals in the process of psychological healing and development and through their interventions, as privileged and powerful members of society, upon the diseased socio-economic/political system itself. Through their insightful, passionate, and well-researched commentary, Aron and Corne demonstrate that Martin-Baro indeed lived and died by his praxis, proving that psychology's current state of critical inertia is not a necessary condition. In my opinion, Martin-Baro is destined to become the patron saint of psychology--and, boy, does it need one.

This Book Is Full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don't Touch It (John Dies at the End), by David Wong

From David Wong, the writer of the cult sensation John Dies at the End,omes another terrifying and hilarious tale of almost Armageddon at the hands of two hopeless heroes.

Warning: You may have a huge, invisible spider living in your skull. THIS IS NOT A METAPHOR.

You will dismiss this as ridiculous fear-mongering. Dismissing things as ridiculous fear-mongering is, in fact, the first symptom of parasitic spider infection -- the creature stimulates skepticism, in order to prevent you from seeking a cure. That's just as well, since the "cure" involves learning what a chainsaw tastes like. You can't feel the spider, because it controls your nerve endings. You won't even feel it when it breeds. And it will breed.

Just stay calm, and remember that telling you about the spider situation is not the same as having caused it. I'm just the messenger. Even if I did sort of cause it. Either way, I won't hold it against you if you're upset. I know that's just the spider talking.

"Like an episode of AMC's "The Walking Dead" written by Douglas Adams of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." …Imagine a mentally ill narrator describing the zombie apocalypse while drunk, and the end result is unlike any other book of the genre. Seriously, dude, touch it and read it." –Washington Post

"Kevin Smith's Clerks meets H.P. Lovecraft in this exceptional thriller… David Wong (Jason Pargin) is a fantastic author with a supernatural talent for humor. If you want a poignant, laugh-out-loud funny, disturbing, ridiculous, self-aware, socially relevant horror novel than This Book is Full of Spiders: Seriously Dude, Don't Touch It is the one and only book for you." –SF Signal

From Booklist
Wong—in reality Cracked.com writer Jason Pargin—follows up his comic horror novel John Dies at the End (2009) with this wildly out-there sequel. Best friends John and Dave live in a smallish town that seems to suffer from a surfeit of supernatural and suspicious events. The story begins with a local cop being, um, intruded upon by a spiderish creature that turns its victim into, um, a zombie-like individual, and it gets a whole lot weirder from there. Wong, the book’s first-person narrator and also one of its central characters (John being “John Cheese,” a fellow Cracked.com contributor) focuses mainly on the laughs and the strange goings-on, but there’s a very interesting idea here: What if the current pop-culture zombie mania could lead to a pseudo-zombie apocalypse? What if, in other words, enough people believe in something to turn it into reality? And how do a couple of slacker dudes defeat a creature that, technically, doesn’t even exist? Full of laughs and goofiness, the book should definitely appeal to fans of John Dies at the End and to readers of comic horror fiction in general (especially, it should be noted, fans of British novelist Tom Holt, who will be familiar with the same sort of whimsy and ordinary-guy-in-extraordinary-situation environment.) --David Pitt

Review

“Kevin Smith's Clerks meets H.P. Lovecraft in this exceptional thriller that makes zombies relevant again… From the dialogue to the descriptions, lines are delivered with faultless timing and wit. Wong never has to reach for comedy, it flows naturally with nary a stumble… the most pertinent story of the genre since George Romero's Dawn of the Dead… a tighter, more concentrated read than John Dies at the End… David Wong (Jason Pargin) is a fantastic author with a supernatural talent for humor. If you want a poignant, laugh-out-loud funny, disturbing, ridiculous, self-aware, socially relevant horror novel than This Book is Full of Spiders: Seriously Dude, Don't Touch It is the one and only book for you.” ―SF Signal

“The comedic and crackling dialogue also brings a whimsical flair to the story, making it seem like an episode of AMC's "The Walking Dead" written by Douglas Adams of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." …Imagine a mentally ill narrator describing the zombie apocalypse while drunk, and the end result is unlike any other book of the genre. Seriously, dude, touch it and read it.” ―Washington Post

“[A] phantasmagoria of horror, humor--and even insight into the nature of paranoia, perception, and identity.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Violence, soy sauce and zombie survivalists abound in this clever and funny sequel to John Dies at the End (2009). One of the great things about discovering new writers, especially in the narrow range of hybrid-genre comedic novels, is realizing that they're having just as much fun making this stuff up as you are reading it. Sitting squarely with the likes of S.G. Browne and Christopher Moore, the pseudonymous Wong (Cracked editor Jason Pargin) must be pissing himself laughing at his own writing, even as he's giving fans an even funnier, tighter and justifiably insane entry in the series.... The humor here is unforced and good-naturedly gory. Anyone who enjoyed the recent films The Cabin in the Woods or Tucker & Dale vs. Evil will find themselves right at home. An upcoming (cult?) film adaptation of John Dies at the End promises to lure new readers. A joyful return to the paroxysms of laughter lurking in the American Midwest.” ―Kirkus

“Sure to please the Fangoria set while appealing to a wider audience, the book's smart take on fear manages to tap into readers' existential dread on one page, then have them laughing the next.” ―Publishers Weekly on John Dies at the End

“…strikes enough of a balance between hilarity, horror, and surrealism here to keep anyone glued to the story.” ―Booklist on John Dies at the End

“You can (and will want to) read JOHN DIES AT THE END in one sitting.” ―BookReporter.com on John Dies at the End

“Wong blends horror and suspense with comedy--a tricky combination--and pulls it off effortlessly.” ―FashionAddict.com on John Dies at the End

“It’s interesting, compelling, engaging, arresting and--yes--sometimes even horrifying. And when it’s not being any of those things, it’s funny. Very, very funny.” ―January Magazine on John Dies at the End

“This is one of the most entertaining and addictive novels I've ever read.” ―Jacob Kier, publisher, Permuted Press, on John Dies at the End

“The rare genre novel that manages to keep its sense of humor strong without ever diminishing the scares; David is a consistently hilarious narrator whose one-liners and running commentary are sincere in a way that makes the horrors he confronts even more unsettling.” ―The Onion AV Club on John Dies at the End

“A loopy buddy-movie of a book with deadpan humor and great turns of phrase...Just plain fun.” ―Library Journal on John Dies at the End

“John Dies at the End is like an H.P. Lovecraft tale if Lovecraft were into poop and fart jokes.” ―Fangoria on John Dies at the End

“The book takes every pop culture trend of the past twenty years, peppers it with 14-year-old dick and fart humor, and blends it all together with a huge heaping of splatterpunk gore…. Successfully blend[s] laugh-out-loud humor with legitimate horror.” ―i09.com on John Dies at the End

Not John Dies At The End, but a good sequel
By Matthew
I was told by quite a few people that this book is better than the first. I disagree, but I still enjoyed it a lot.

We pick up a few years later. Dave, John, and Amy are existing. That's probably the best word for it. The beginning and introduction are definitely some of the better sections of the book. Wong's wit comes right back like it never took a break. The juxtaposition of Dave trying to survive his depression and other mental issues in the real world while being forced to deal with horrific things from other worlds is compelling. At first, getting chapters from Amy and John's perspectives is a highlight of the book. John, in particular, takes on a lot more dimension, and we get the chance to see him as more than just a clown.

But the middle of the book overdoes the perspective switching to the point where everything seems to progress very slowly. In comparison to JDATE, the story also seems short on ideas. Especially during the long portion when Wong convinces us that all he's got up his sleeve is a typical zombie apocalypse, but with spiders. (It's a lot more complicated) Since the things that are happening are so blatantly terrible, we lose a lot of the book's humor during this section. I started to miss the charm of John, Dave, and a few other people being the only ones who know about the dark supernatural things happening. We definitely lose the caveat that this "actually" happened in some small town in America. If the events in this book took place, they'd have made national news.

The last third of the story really saves it. As soon as the characters reunite, the book kicks into gear, and becomes fast, scary, fun, and filled with ideas all over again. This includes at least one moment so epic, ridiculous, and just slightly stupid, (in the right way) that I had to read it over twice to believe it had actually been put in a published book.

If you wanted JDATE to stick to a single plot line instead of being a series of arcs and episodes, here you go. You'll probably like this more. Personally I didn't like it as much, but I still had fun.

Far Better Than the First
By Brandon Carbaugh
Let me preface this by saying that I was a big fan of John Dies At The End. I discovered the book back when it was still freely available on the internet; before it exploded and became a cult horror sensation / movie / etc. That said, John Dies was never a perfect book, or even a very good one. Fans love the book for its deeply character-rooted humor, bizarre Lovecraftian monster-horror, and compulsive, borderline-addictive readability. This let us see past patchy pacing, spotty storytelling, and some questionable exposition dumps.

Having just finished "This Book Is Full of Spiders" at 2 AM this morning, I'm happy to report Wong has ironed out the kinks without losing the charm.

Somewhere between these two books, I think Wong must have taken a class on story structure, or maybe sold his soul to the devil or something. In either case, Spiders is a polished, carefully-crafted piece of storytelling, and it shows. Though Wong hits the gas on the scares and action pretty early, he's now smart enough not to keep his foot on the pedal the whole time. John Dies was comedy-horror fired out of a shotgun. Spiders cuts like a surgeon's scalpel.

Starting within the framework of your basic "zombie outbreak / city on lockdown" story, Wong slowly layers on the sense of mystery and dread. This IS a Wong book, though, so we always know that it's just a matter of time until something horrible and otherworldly explodes out of someone's ass, and the story takes its next sharp left turn into deeper weirdness, more dire straits, broader humor, bigger action, higher stakes, and even tighter tension. Wong shoves the reader into one bats***crazy scenario after another -- and then before the reader even has time to orient, he shakes the hell out of them, cackles gleefully in their face, makes a dick joke, and shoves them on to the next one.

The characters are deeper, the jokes are more relevant (if less frequent), the scares are bigger (and darker, and loom larger), and Wong even has a thing or two to say about the nature of mass hysteria.

Spiders comes highly recommended.

Don't bother unless you're a huge fan of the first book. But maybe not even then.

Can't recommend. This book is "John Dies At The End" only with all the good and new stuff gone. JDAtE was good because you can tell Dave's been dreaming up this world for a long time. With Spiders, we've already been there. The story is muddied, inconsistent and has no motivation.

The plot is basically the heroes being thrown around by situations and scooby-dooing the ending. Monsters appear when needed, heroes escape at the right time or is saved at the right time, there's no agency to any character, they do stuff because the plot demands it. Its practically insulting because the two main characters really only escapes when they need to and not by their own actions.

Did I mention monsters appearing to scare you, then inconsistently, doesn't come back when the heroes are around? There's that, but there's also jump scares. Every other chapter ends or begins in a jump scare. In a book. Dave, jump scares work in movies and can be added to scripts, but they don't work with books. Especially not if you keep doing it. "Dave turns the corner, and a sees the bloody maw of a monster!" Then chapter ends and you find out its just a statue of a monster. (example, not a real excerpt, but shit like this happens a lot in this book.)
