Had potential, but choppy writing and hefty page count hurt.

I requested this because of the pretty cover and the blurb. What I expected was some light, fluffy, fun. Unfortunately, The Lost Boys did not deliver. I struggled to keep reading before I hit 100 pages! I've learned a very valuable lesson though. Always check the page count! This puppy was over 500 pages, unnecessarily long.

Now, the idea for the story had lots of potential. Who doesn't love handsome gentlemen ghosts, graveyards, witchy magic, and boarding schools? My problem was with the execution. The writing style was choppy and the 16 year old MC came across much younger to me, maybe 12? I was wondering if this was more of a middle grade book, but a few mature scenes quickly settled that it's definitely not.

I'm not a writer, but I can certainly identify what works for me and what doesn't. It was overwritten. I don't mean that it had purple prose, but that each scene was described to death. Simple scenes are detailed & repetitive, not counting on the reader to make connections. When someone yells or shoves somebody, we assume they're angry. Being shown and then told in great detail all the time makes the reading drag, so this book was a slow go for me. I believe this story could've been pulled of if it had been edited & chopped down by about 200 pages! I know that's harsh, but it's easier to read less than stellar writing and still appreciate the story if it's a quick read.

I'm giving it 2 stars because this appears to be written by a very young author and I see potential that wasn't quite tapped.

Not as good as I expcted

17 year-old Joe Grey has moved to a new town because of her mom's new job. Her immediate attraction to Tristan has her returning daily to the grave yard where they meet. Soon after arrival she finds out she'll be going to a boarding school and dreads leaving him. One fateful night will affect their future. Will Tristan and Joe be together?

I was pretty excited to get this book. I felt like the premise was good and looked forward to discovering the secret. The author was detailed oriented. There were very few errors. I felt the beginning of the book was really pretty good but I found I lost interest in the highschool drama about 1/2 way through. By that point, I just wanted to finish it.

I did struggle with this book for several reasons. One, I'm not 100% the author knew who she wanted her audience to be. Over all the language and story telling style seemed junior high'ish. The book focused a lot on the going's on at the highschool and highschool drama. But then she throws in minor sexual jokes and themes and alcohol use which, in my opinion, lends it to college age reader.

The other flaw with the book is the unrealistic and/or forced plot creations. For example, when she arrives to school she's accidentally assigned a boy's room. Not only doesn't she or the boy mind but her mom signs a release form to allow her to continue to share a room with a boy. Although times are changed from when I was young, but there's no way I'd been allowed to do that. Nor, despite being a tomboy, would I have been comfortable sharing a room with a boy I just met. That's just one example.

Overall, the book wasn't horrible. It just really needed to move along faster with less filler and have a more targeted audience. I wouldn't either encourage or discourage someone to read the book. I did noticed this is intended to be a trilogy, I'm not sure I'd read either of the two books.

Somewhat Entertaining But Too Ridiculous to Deserve a Higher Rating

I was never a fan of Stephenie Meyer despite her overwhelming fame brought on by the Twilight series. Thus, the tagline in the blurb did more damage than good when it comes to drawing my attention. But one can hardly ever walk away from a ghost story that easy, even though now I wish I had done just that.

Instead of being a heartbreaking mystery romance filled with suspense and tension, The Lost Boys is merely a cliched high school drama that uses ghosts as characters to explain away all the ridiculousness and absurdity one can undoubtedly recognize from the plot. It also suffers severely from the rather infamous trope of "everyone is drop dead gorgeous" by introducing characters that are simply too perfect to be true (This might have fooled and dazzled me in my earlier days, but no-no, not now). Though to Lilian Carmine's credit, she did manage to gain some of my respect by giving a few of them their unique personalities.

As a whole, I found The Lost Boys extremely lacking in the mystery department, but that is partially my own fault since nowhere in the synopsis has promised me anything of that nature. As a matter of fact, the biggest mystery has already been revealed before you even go into the book. Being a "romantic tale of a girl meets ghost", I spent more time than I wanted drowning in boredom while waiting for our MC, Joe, to find out that this handsome young boy she is secretly crushing on is actually a ghost. Even with this lengthy build up, their romance still felt halfhearted but interesting enough to keep me going.

For a 500+ pages book, The Lost Boys is surprisingly easy to read. It didn't give me the feeling of moving a mountain across my shoulders, but it could still be condensed further regardless. Particularly, a round of character elimination would be greatly beneficial as well as removing all the unnecessary subplots. Additionally, Carmine's writing also left much to be desired. Although quite readable, her lack of experience and skill with her craft is fairly obvious to notice, though nothing out of the norm to how you would usually expect from a debut author.

Without a doubt, The Lost Boys can be enjoyable for many others, so long as you have the proper mindset and expectations before starting it. But for me, it failed to provide excitement and unpredictability for which I was seeking. Nevertheless, I will probably check out the next book just to see how things have progressed, but that will be a story for another day.

In this lightweight, witty story, helpful animals find "room on the broom" of a generous witch. At first, a striped cat accompanies the cheerful sorceress: "How the cat purred/ and how the witch grinned,/ As they sat on their broomstick/ and flew through the wind." Next, a spotted dog retrieves the witch's flyaway black hat and asks to come aboard. The three riders soon welcome a green parrot (who finds the witch's lost hair ribbon) and a frog (who rescues her wand from the bottom of a pond). When threatened by a dragon, the loyal animals form a "Brementown Musicians" chimera whose "terrible voice,/ when it started to speak,/ was a yowl and a growl/ and a croak and a shriek." The witch repays them by conjuring a cushier vehicle. Donaldson and Scheffler, previously paired for The Gruffalo, emphasize the airborne animals' contentment and evoke sympathy for the broom's driver. In Scheffler's comical panels and insets, the witch has a warty nose and lace-up boots, but wears a pleasant smile; Donaldson puts a spooky/silly spin on the folktale format. The metrical rhyme and goofy suspense aren't groundbreaking, but readers will likely find it refreshing to see a witch playing against type. Ages 4-8.

K-Gr 3-A witch and her cat pick up a dog, a bird, and a frog, and fly off on her broomstick. The frog jumps for joy, the broomstick snaps in two, the animals land in a bog, and a dragon captures the witch. What to do? As in the Grimms' "The Bremen Town Musicians," the animals, covered in mud, stand on each other and "yowl," "growl," "croak," and "shriek," scaring the dragon and saving the witch. All's well that ends well for the witch conjures up a super broom with seats for the cat and dog, a nest for the bird, and a pool for the frog. The story is in rhyme, bouncing merrily along, full of fun, and not at all scary. The illustrations are witty and wonderful. All the characters, even the dragon, have the same goofy grin and large, round eyes. Dressed in a purple skirt, red blouse, and black cape and hat, the witch, with a long, ginger braid, is more friendly than frightening. The image of the red dragon carrying her, passed out cold, is a hoot. And her cat is not the traditional black cat; it looks more like a baby tiger. The result is a surefire read-aloud hit.

After checking out this book from the library, my son was requesting it daily. We couldn't wait to add it to our personal library permanently, but when it arrived, the text was different from the version we had grown to love.

Instead of the adorable text:
"A witch with french fries tastes delicious to me!" and "Just this once I'll have witch WITHOUT fries!"
we found the unappetizing text:
"And you, witch, look like a good supper to me" and "He said, 'I won't let you go, do you think I'm a fool?'"

Say what?!

Others have experienced the same thing, so please go and look at a physical copy in a book store instead of ordering through Amazon if you want to be guaranteed the original (and far superior!) version.

This copy is going back to Amazon, and I've already talked to Barnes and Noble about getting the correct version. It's worth the extra 3 bucks. The original version gets a perfect 5 star rating, but we are completely disappointed in what Amazon shipped to us.

Is there Room on the Broom for me??

I seriously love this story. I actually saw it on Netflix first and thought it was so adorable and cute. So when I found out that it was actually a childrens book of course I jumped on my trusty Amazon and ordered one right away.

I ordered the board book because I have an 18 month old that just LOVES the sound of paper ripping so the paperback probably not a good idea for a couple more years. Book came undamaged and a perfect size for me to read to my toddler.

He loves to point out the kitty and the puppy, and we are working on 'frog' and 'bird'. Such an adorable friendship story! Good for your own children or to give as a gift for a child under the age of 8.

This is also the same author as The Gruffalo which is another wonderful story! Both book AND claymation stories recommended. If fact, anything from Julia Donaldson!

I paid full price for this item and review it to give other buyers out there more information not listed and whether I would recommended it.

Order the BOARD BOOK! All the lines are correct in that version!

We had borrowed this book from our local library, and my autistic son loved it so much that he wanted me to read it every night. I decided we needed to find him a copy of his own. I saw some reviews that said that some of the lines had been changed. We got the board book and all the lines are correct. If you want a good copy of this book, order the board book, NOT the paperback or hardback!

Love This...It's Like Great Advice from Your Awesome Sister.

Yes, I have bought the book AND the audio version. I have always loved Kate Hudson and of course, her mom. I relate to them so much.

I bought this book because I really felt like I needed some inspiration. I run a guesthouse in Key West which is #1 on Tripadvisor called Alexander's, ( I only say this because it comes with so much pressure to maintain that)...but while I live on a tropical island, my desire for all things to be perfect there for guests and staff, can make me feel super stressed out and depleted. It's a very busy guesthouse, thank goodness. Lately, I have felt even more burnt out, as I have been running it for 10 years and have begun to feel depleted. I haven't been taking better care of myself. I am still young-ish (44 yrs old) and have started feeling my hormones starting to change.

I am married, have a husband and an 11 year old step son (very sweet), but usually am trying to be wonder woman for everyone. Run a business, run a home, take care of my man and family, spend time with friends, take care of myself, work out, eat better...trying to get some sleep which has been difficult...it's wild...while I have so many blessings in my life...I can still feel so depleted...I guess it's true....even when you have lots of "good" it too, can feel like a lot if we don't take care of ourselves.

I do eat okay, I drink green juices daily, but also like to have mac and cheese...it's a yin and yang in my diet...feel too tired to exercise...could lose about 20 lbs etc..

So I read this book cover to cover in one sitting, did all of the quizzes and immediately began to feel inspired. Kate doesn't make it complicated. The food ideas are simple...not hours of complicated recipes and such. Just a lot of simple food ideas and simple cleanses. What I love is she talks so much about taking care of ourselves and how to do that on a daily basis. Lots of tools to help create a healthy lifestyle that are not overwhelming. For example....for meditation, she shares simple phone apps for guided meditations for those who are not used to meditation like me...she also provides a simple menu plan (not overwhelming or expensive)...also guides you to find out what works in your one life already and build on that...gives ideas for working out that also don't feel overwhelming.

It is all doable...we just have to want to do it. Plain and simple. All the ideas in the book feel....accessible.

I have changed my diet for the last week to the simple foods combinations she listed like making the lentils and quinoa on Sunday (this is huge in changing how I have been feeling), began walking and did a spinning class....I have been meditating for 10 min in the AM and PM right before bed (more just quieting my mind and focusing on feeling "gentle" inside me...if that makes sense ha, ha)...and I swear...I FEEL DIFFERENT.

I just realized she is the narrator of her book too, so I bought that too, so I can hear her talk to me in my car on the way to work...like a sister giving me advice.

I love you Kate for getting me through a difficult time in my life and helping me remember to truly take care of myself...so I can improve the quality of my life and enjoy my life. I do it for so many others, but if I don't take care of myself....I won't enjoy the rewards of it all.

Thank you Kate and Goldie for being strong, loving, happy women who think outside the norm and radiate light from within. You show us all, that while life may not always be perfect, we will all have happy times, but also experiences challenges too....we can squint our eyes, see things differently, we can stretch, go for a walk, do a cleanse to let the emotions bubble to the surface and be cleansed away, we can cry, we can laugh, we can go take a fun exercise class, we can talk to a friend...there are tools to get us through that will enhance our experience of life.

A refreshing, positive, and spirited book to help keep perspective and get inspired in your life

Kate Hudson’s book Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body touches on fitness, nutrition, health, and offers insightful tips on boosting one's self-esteem and confidence, and manages to do it in a fairly accessible manner. It sets out her insight on what are the keys to healthy living: It's "about simplicity, accessibility, positivity and throwing the idea of 'perfection' out the window."

Her book outlines that there are no secrets to success, other than hard work and motivation, and seeking contentment in all aspects of life. Some of the practices she imparts is that she hardly ever eats breakfast, and reveals that the majority of her food intake is tofu, nuts, fruits and vegetables and avoids meat, dairy and gluten, and she limits sugar. That said, the book really focuses on the overall approach to life, rather than being focused on a litany of things you “should” or “should not” do, which I find refreshing. The most important insight: be kind to yourself and your body, and be your own best advocate.

In all, a refreshing, positive, and spirited book to help keep perspective and get inspired in your life.

Quiz Point Ranges Off in Part 2, Chapter 5 Quiz (so it appears)

I'm only partially through the book but I thought this was worth noting for readers. It seems in the quiz at the beginning of Part 2, Chapter 5, Your Physical Profiles, the numerical result ranges off. If you split the three doshas evenly, from a minimum possible score of 23 to a maximum possible score of 69, it should be as follows:

Vata: 23 - 38 (instead of 22 - 33)
Pitta: 39 - 54 (instead of 34 - 44)
Kapha: 55 - 69 (instead of 45 - 66)

There are 23 questions, with possible values of 1, 2 or 3 for answers. The minimum you could get is 23, not 22 and the maximum you could get is 69, not 66. So it seems their calculations are based on 22 questions instead of the 23 that are actually there. Also their ranges seem way off, Vata is 12 points, Pitta is 11 points and Kapha is a whopping 22 point range. Although there always is the chance they meant for it to be skewed.

I noticed this because the book had me as a Kapha despite the description of the Pitta being spot on for me. With my adjusted ranges, I'm right in the middle of Pitta.

Kindergarten-Grade 3AFollowing the format of their popular picture book about manners, It's a Spoon, Not a Shovel (Dial, 1995), the Buehners now take on behavioral issues. On each double-page spread, readers are given three choices, two of them obviously wrong and quite amusing, and must pick the proper behavior for the animal in question. Situations include promising to do something until a more attractive offer comes along; considering a lie to avoid punishment; wanting to cheat on a test; and being tempted to destroy or litter property. The language is filled with tongue-tripping alliteration and wit: "Run over Rudy's red rubber radio repeatedly." The large, bright illustrations, executed in oils and acrylics, sustain the text's humor. A group of fish are, literally, in school; a bat reads Wait Until Dark; Santa and his reindeer fly across the Arctic sky; and a fish has a packet of Gummy Worms. Children can search the illustrations for the letters of the correct answers and check their responses in the answer key. Many animals are also hidden in each picture. The Buehners (It's a Spoon, Not a Shovel! 1995, etc.) continue their mission to make learning decorum a giggle instead of a slap on the wrist. In page-long fables, animals such as Ollie the Octopus and Rateesh Rat get into situations that demand decisions, while multiple-choice quizzes allow readers to participate. When Ollie's mother calls him for dinner, should he obey her, or stay and play? When Rateesh is feeling lonely, will hoarding or sharing his cheese endear him to rodent playmates? The letter of the correct answer is hidden somewhere in the lush illustration accompanying every tale, and some of these are difficult to find; regardless, the answers are provided at the end of the book. The illustrations must be pored over; observant readers will discover an intrepid bee in every take and plenty of hidden silliness: sheep-shaped clouds, a gummy-worm fish snack, Santa departing from the North Pole. Most children will have no problem discerning correct behavior, and some adults may wince in recognition at the black-and-white approach to ethics: It's not right to lie about a child's age at restaurants where those under five eat free. Not for 4-year olds even though it says so!

I was really disappointed in this book when I received it. Based on what I'd read, it seemed like the right book to teach my 4-year-old son about saying you're sorry, admitting when you did something wrong, etc. The details section even says this book is good for kids 4-8. However, the lessons taught in this book deal with a far more sophisticaeted, responsible world than that of a 4-year-old. For example, one page deals with a bat who is supposed to stay home and take care of his baby sister while his mother goes out. His friends ask the bat to come outside and play and the bat has to decide whether to keep his promise to his mom and be responsible or go play. A totally inappropriate story for a 4-year old who should never responsible for another child. In addition, in a story about respect for others' property, one of the possible answers is "'Cool' means you never have to say you're hairy." This answer is NOT something my 4-year-old would ever understand and is just one example of answers which are confusing (and meaningless) to 4-year olds. I intend to return this book.

Great book!

I bought this for my 6 year old. It is a series of short paragraphs with a multiple choice section at the end of each one. The stories are cute and funny, and she really got into thinking about the "right thing to do". Each short story has a different moral-example-saying sorry, telling the truth, being responsible, not following the crowd etc..She also enjoyed looking for the hidden answer in the picture for each short story. A great book-with good examples on doing the right thing.

I love this book, make your children think about their behavior and also help them to realize the right answer in every case that the book present.
I bought it for my daughter that is 4 years old and I would recommend it for everyone.

A tough read, but more than worth it

I'm always up for a good challenge, whether it be in books, music or movies, and from what I've heard Joyce is about as challenging as they come in the literary world. However, since it seemed like "Ulysses" or "Finnegan's Wake" would be a bit much to start with, I found myself reading "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" as an introduction to his work. And although I found this book about as easy to get into as Princeton, it was about as rewarding as well. "Portrait" is certainly anything but a light read. Joyce's meandering narrative and serpentine prose can be confusing to say the least, and on more than one occasion I had to read a sentence about five times in order to figure out what I had just read. For all its verbosity, though, "Portrait" is an essential read because the story of Stephen Dedalus carries so much resonance. I'm about the same age as Stephen was in this story, and I can relate pretty easily to his search for answers. Growing up in Ireland around the turn of the twentieth century, Stephen faces existential questions that should ring true for a young person coming from any culture at any time. He tries to find satisfaction by giving in to his lust, and when that doesn't work he goes all the way to the other end of the spectrum in seeking fulfillment through religious devotion. In the end, however, neither of these extremes provides Stephen with the answers he's looking for. Stephen's story demonstrates one unfortunate fact of life: when you're seeking meaning, there are no easy answers. Ultimately, as Stephen tells his friend Cranly, he decides that his solution is to "express myself in some mode of life or art as freely as I can and as wholly as I can," even if it means making mistakes or being spurned by society. In "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," Joyce outlines some important ideas that have since become prominent in literature, notably noncomformity, self-expression, coming of age, and the nature of religious belief. This book may not have been perfectly written, but since Joyce was aiming so high it's easy to overlook any imperfections in his style. "Portrait" was written with plenty of intelligence and soul, so it's easy to see why it's still read after all these years.

the edition to get

If you're gonna buy a copy of "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," you can't go wrong with the Wordsworth Classic edition. Its advantages are several:

1. It's extremely cheap.

2. It features a very long and immensely insightful (32-page) introduction by Jaqueline Belanger, which includes a biography, publishing background, sections on language structure, irony, etc. There are also many suggestions for further syntopic or critical reading.

3. The thing is complete and unabridged.

4. There are extensive footnotes at the end, which are keyed throughout in the text, explaining all the Latin and the extinct realia of Joyce's world.

In short, get it.

As for the work itself, it's a very good prepper for "Ulysses:" I started that novel without having done this one. Later I came back to this: much was made clearer. Don't make my mistake.

Less a Review, more a guide to what Edition to buy

If you're going to buy 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' as a paperback, I strongly advise you to buy this--the Norton Critical Edition. It's depressing to see that the Penguin Classics edition is the number one selling version of this wonderful book.

This book is TWO DOLLARS more than the Penguin version. For that $2 you get better quality paper, ink, and binding. More importantly you get Editorial notes that explain Joyce's obscure terms, ultimately making the book more readable. You also get over a dozen other writings dealing with Joyces text. These extras (200 pages worth) provide background information on Joyce's three major themes--Irish politics, Roman Catholicism, and "Aesthetic". Also, there are critical essays which range from general interpretations of the book to specified studies (ie feminist perspective). Being a difficult book, the supplemental material greatly enhanced my appreciation for 'Portrait'.

For ONE DOLLAR -LESS, you could go with this: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Dubliners (Barnes & Noble Classics). Here, not only do you get Portrait of the Artist_, but also you get the collection of short stories, Dubliners. Not to mention better editing. You still get footnotes. And there's some (not a lot) of suplimental material.

For FIVE DOLLARS more than you would spend on the Penguin book, you could get A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (Everyman's Library (Cloth)). If you're going to buy a book, why not get one that will last the rest of your life? Well then, that would be the Everyman's Clothbound you seek.
