About the Author
John Steinbeck, born in Salinas, California, in 1902, grew up in a fertile agricultural valley, about twenty-five miles from the Pacific Coast. Both the valley and the coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel, Cup of Gold (1929).
 
After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books, The Pastures of Heaven (1932) and To a God Unknown (1933), and worked on short stories later collected in The Long Valley (1938). Popular success and financial security came only with Tortilla Flat (1935), stories about Monterey’s paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on the California laboring class: In Dubious Battle (1936), Of Mice and Men (1937), and the book considered by many his finest, The Grapes of Wrath (1939). The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939.
 
Early in the 1940s, Steinbeck became a filmmaker with The Forgotten Village (1941) and a serious student of marine biology with Sea of Cortez (1941). He devoted his services to the war, writing Bombs Away (1942) and the controversial play-novelette The Moon is Down (1942).Cannery Row (1945), The Wayward Bus (1948), another experimental drama, Burning Bright(1950), and The Log from the Sea of Cortez (1951) preceded publication of the monumental East of Eden (1952), an ambitious saga of the Salinas Valley and his own family’s history.
 
The last decades of his life were spent in New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. Later books include Sweet Thursday (1954), The Short Reign of Pippin IV: A Fabrication (1957), Once There Was a War (1958), The Winter of Our Discontent (1961),Travels with Charley in Search of America (1962), America and Americans (1966), and the posthumously published Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters (1969), Viva Zapata!(1975), The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights (1976), and Working Days: The Journals of The Grapes of Wrath (1989).
 
Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, and, in 1964, he was presented with the United States Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Steinbeck died in New York in 1968. Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures. 

Susan Shillinglaw is a professor of English San Jose State University. She is the author of On Reading the Grapes of Wrath and Carol and John Steinbeck: Portrait of a Marriage.

A story about both Russia and about two journalists

I read this book after returning home from a two week trip in Southwestern Russia. Steinbeck and Capa took their journey in 1948. They travel from Moscow to Volgograd and Rostov before turning back in Georgia. Much of the tension in this book springs from the rapidly cooling relationship between leaders of Russia and the United States at that point in time.
Their aim is not political. They seek to understand the hearts of the Soviet people. One of the amusing elements of this book is their regular conflict with the Soviet censors, who refuse to believe that they do not have political motives. Steinbeck intersperses the commentary on Russia with the nuts and bolts of their daily travels. The method mirrors the approach of his 1940 collaboration in the Gulf of California, "The Log from the Sea of Cortez." Steinbeck likes to write about the universal character of people and this trip to Russia or his previous trip in Mexico both speak to that interest. His conclusion is that Russians are like people anywhere else - they are proud of their homes and their families and are sincere in their efforts to build their nascent country. Steinbeck also goes to pains to elicit the hope among the Russian people for peace.
Many of the things that catch their eye remain constant to now. One interesting change is the perspective of the Russian people about the direction of their country. In Steinbeck's recollection, the people recognize that they are sacrificing for the good of their country. In 1948, the Russians expect that they will eventually gain from their hard work. Now they seem to have less faith.
This book is a great chance to learn about the personality of the world famous Robert Capa. During his travels with the Hungarian photojournalist, Steinbeck gets pretty pesky about Capa's personal habits. It seems that Capa likes long baths, other people's books, and morning silence. Steinbeck and Capa share rooms during their trip. I really enjoyed the secondary theme that develops on Capa's behavior.
Everyone should read this book, not just people who want to know about Russia.

Great book, but buy in hardback - photo quality in the 1999 edition is poor

This is a great book, but you should buy a hardback edition instead of the paperback. I am a frequent visitor to Russia and I enjoyed the oportunity to compare and contrast Russia today with postwar Russia under Stalin. Unfortunately, Robert Capa's photos in the 1999 paperback are small and muddy. I could not even recognize places that I have visited many times. This book was a collaborative effort, but the 1999 printing seriously short changes Capa's contribution.

I don't know if the images are better in the 2001 paperback or the Kindle version, but after reading the 1999 edition I got a copy of the 1948 hardback via Amazon. I recommend that you do the same if you want to fully enjoy this excellent work.

Post-war Russia through very talented eyes

This wonderfully written book takes you through post-war Soviet Union, to farms and cities devastated by war but struggling to return to normalcy. Robert Capa not only adds wonderful photos but his role in this story is both funny and illuminating for any Capa fans. Written in the late 1940s, the story provides us with a very human side of the Russian people. The openness and friendliness of everyone they meet contrasts with the paranoia and hatred so present in the US at that time.
I read this as both a photographer and one who was recently in Russia and the insight provided was very enjoyable and educating. Capa's mannerisms and method of photography allowed his subjects to open up and feel comfortable in his lens -- not an easy thing since so many of the people had lost family and suffered terribly. Steinbeck's writing is honest, funny and his skills as a non-partisan reporter really shine in this work.

Working in a studio I often had access to record my own band and experiment. In the early '90s I recorded a six-song demo for a band that I was drumming with. We had only been a band for about three weeks when this demo made it into the hands of a local production company person, who at the time worked with RCA records. Although we didn’t end up with this label, the person who originally discovered us ended up managing our band and got us signed to a major label and many indie labels. It is great to have a backup plan, especially as a musician. Audio engineering is a great career option when being a musician isn't paying the bills. It allows you to still be creative and involved in the music scene. You may not get rich right away (or ever) but seeing your name on a CD you recorded is priceless.

One of the many reasons I became an audio engineer was to record and produce my own bands and music. Here I am mixing me and my wife's band, annabella, on my studio's Toft console.

About the Author
Tim Dittmar is a musician, recording and live sound engineer, producer, songwriter, and professor. Tim began his professional recording career in 1987 at Cedar Creek Recording studio in Austin, Texas. Before locating to Austin, Tim received an Associate in Arts in Radio/TV Production from Del Mar Junior College. He then spent much of the nineties touring with a punk group, recording bands, and running live sound on the infamous 6th street at various venues. He was hired in 2000 as a professor and full-time faculty member at Austin Community College where he currently teaches Audio Engineering I, Audio Engineering IV, and the Special Projects class. Tim heads up the Technical side of Commercial Music Management at the college. He has also been a returning lecturer at the University of Texas teaching Audio Production and Audio for Picture. Tim has worked in numerous studios in Austin, Los Angeles and Chicago, compiling over 300 album credits. Recording such artists as the Old 97's, Voxtrot, Dynamite Boy, King Missile and the Murdocks. In 2008 he was invited to moderate a panel at the Tape Op Conference in New Orleans where he spoke on "The State of Audio Education”. At present, he owns and operates Las Olas Recording in Georgetown, Texas. He currently tours and records with his wife in the group Annabella and can also be seen drumming with The Hearts & The Minds, Kristi Rae, and Everything's Gone Green.

Great instructional guide!

DISCLAIMER: Although this was given to me through Vine to review, unlike other questionable "reviewers", I actually take the time to USE the product or READ the book. So whatever score/review the product gets, it's absolutely earned. At no time is a product given a particular review or rating simply because I fear loosing Vine status. That's not how the Vine program operates.

Anyhoo, onto the review:

Plainly put, this is a great book. Not only does the author take the time to explain, in detail, what how and why things work the way they do, he also provides illustrations for the layman. I read this cover to cover over a period of a week and honestly learned quite a bit. And I've been in audio production for years! You can definitely tell the author knows his stuff and has actually DONE what he writes about. In lieu of some authors who just compile information and later jam it all together into what barely passes as a book.

I definitely applaud the author and highly recommend this book to those wishing to learn the basics, and to a point, the higher-level operation of sound reproduction.

99 Reasons to Read Audio Engineering 101

By the title, Audio Engineering 101, you know that Timothy A. Dittmar's book is going to cover that basics of Audio Engineering. Anytime you see that 101, as any community college student knows, you know it is going to be a rudimentary primer. Kind of Audio Engineering for Dummies. Some of the stuff is pretty basic, and I just kind of skimmed over it. Advice for interns, like not to tell clients how awful they sound, and don't sit around texting while rolling your eyes, etc., etc., etc..

But there is a lot of practical information and explanation of audio concepts like compression, noise gates, EQ, phlanging, and phase. I really like the microphone guide which shows various types and brands of microphones along with graphs of frequency response: Cascade Fat Head, Small-Diaphragm Condenser, Neumann U 87, or the ubiquitous Shure SM58. One chapter is a round table where questions are posed to a group of recording engineers like, what mic would you take with you on a desert island? There is a website where you can go and download audio clips that illustrate the concepts being discussed.

All in all, this is a handy book with a lot of good information that would be of interest to anyone interested in home recording or a career in audio engineering.

Interesting, somewhat useful, and pretty inconsistent

As someone who has recorded in a studio, and who has a digital recording system of his own, I gave this a try to see how it might help guide me through the recording process. First off, this book is not just about the technical end of recording - it also gives some good hints into interning, marketing, client relations, how to conduct yourself in the studio, etc. THIS portion of the book, although I will never utilize it, is pretty interesting and opened my eyes to a different side of the recording business.

The first 2/3 of the book, which actually cover recording techniques, is why I was interested in this book. Here, this book doesn't seem to know what it's target audience is. The title says "Beginner's Guide to Music Production", and some portions were actually geared to beginners - how to listen, how to place speakers, song structures, how to set up a recording room, place microphones, etc. But then some portions were exceedingly detailed - 23 pages of excruiating detail on the frequecy responses of different microphones. And the chapter on the basics of a mixing board, while covering basic information, seemed to presume an understanding of certain terminologies and processes that weren't defined (and this happened on a couple other occasions, as I remember). Maybe if the reader understood the chapter on signal flow (Chapter 8) before the chapter on mixing consoles (Chapter 6) it would help.

There are also some very basic sound clips and videos available on the internet as a companion to this book - these were referenced in the text, although the only way I knew how to access these were because the web address was on the back cover.

So, there is some good information here, but not all of it is geared toward the beginner as presumed by the title. This would be a good COMPANION reference for someone already familiar with basic recording techniques.

I followed the series faithfully as it was released and absolutely loved it, so much in fact, that I couldn't resist reading it again now that Beaumont has released all four books in one fabulous novel! Thank you Emilia Beaumont and Amazon for Kindle Unlimited! I don't know what I would do without it! This is one WICKED read you don't want to miss and I mean that in a very good way! Beaumont has dazzled her readers yet again with a sultry, seductive and exquisitely enticing love story between wealthy Alexandre "Lex" and his stepsister Aimee. Beaumont uses her amazing talent and incredible skill to tease, tantalize and entertain her readers as only she can. The story is exciting, thrilling, enticing, enchanting, heartwarming, romantic, seductive, arousing, sensual and steamy. Oh, and did I say hot? Yeah Baby, hotter than a cat on a hot tin roof! The dialog is smart, snappy, snarky, humorous, very well written and flows well. The characters are captivating, fascinating, intriguing, engaging and drop dead sexy. Wow wasn't, what I expected

I was not sure what to think about this story as I first started to read it. I didn't know if he was an abusive man trying to have his way with a young girl or if he really cared for Aimee. I kept read though and am glad I did. Though it was rough for me to get through the first part and into the few chapters of the second their story began to unfold. I was so surprised by the turns her life took and how Lex managed keeping their relationship the way he did. It is a definite five-star HEA endind.

Totally excellent story. I read this when it was several different pieces, and I really enjoyed all of it. Their relationship is smoking hot, and the twists and turns in this story are just superb. Definitely pick this up if you are a fan of billionaire stepbrother romances!

A very good book

I am a type of person who isn't organized. I always procrastinate with things and I very seldom make a plan. This book really made sense! I highly recommend it specially if you are ready to make some positive changes in your life to be successful not just as an entrepreneurs but life in general. The way the book was written isn't so serious. I hate reading but I enjoyed it. I am half tempted to give an spoiler alert but I would like you to experience the awe of reading this book on how easy it is to be successful if you are just willing to practice the 9 habits he stated.

I got this for free in exchange of an honest review but I must say I would definitely buy it by heart.

habits can help in every area of your life

RIght away, the format of this book reminded me of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, which I really enjoy. While I love that this book has habits to help entrepreneurs become successful, I think most tips and habits given are things that can improve anyone's life. You can approach these habits, and use them to improve all different qualities of your life.

The structure of this book is to the point. I actually love it when books can go on and on about something and go off on tangents, but then I have a hard time remembering what the whole point of a story was. There is not much extra rambling, and everything is either divided into neat lists or bullet points. The straightforward nature of the book helps readers decide to just start doing what they need to. It keeps the book fairly simple, and quick to read through. I think if you're trying to become a successful entrepreneur at this time, you aren't going to have a lot of time to dedicate to reading, which is why the simple format is great.

I purchased this book when it was in its promotional stage, and free to read on the kindle, but these are my honest opinions either way. It's really helped me with getting on the right track with things.

Great read!

I honestly loved reading this book. At first, I didn't really have high expectations for it. I thought it was going to have the same old stuff that most similar books consist of. This book was really helpful and the author did an excellent job at explains the topics. Being a small business owner, I was intrigued by the title of this book. I'm always looking for ways to make my business more successful. I'm not as organized as I should be and I often procrastinate, so I could definitely stand to pickup some habits of successful people. Who couldn't? Some of the topics discussed in this books are what you'd expect, but the author explained them very thoroughly and made them easily relatable. I really enjoyed this book and I definitely recommend it.

Had potential, but choppy writing and hefty page count hurt.

I requested this because of the pretty cover and the blurb. What I expected was some light, fluffy, fun. Unfortunately, The Lost Boys did not deliver. I struggled to keep reading before I hit 100 pages! I've learned a very valuable lesson though. Always check the page count! This puppy was over 500 pages, unnecessarily long.

Now, the idea for the story had lots of potential. Who doesn't love handsome gentlemen ghosts, graveyards, witchy magic, and boarding schools? My problem was with the execution. The writing style was choppy and the 16 year old MC came across much younger to me, maybe 12? I was wondering if this was more of a middle grade book, but a few mature scenes quickly settled that it's definitely not.

I'm not a writer, but I can certainly identify what works for me and what doesn't. It was overwritten. I don't mean that it had purple prose, but that each scene was described to death. Simple scenes are detailed & repetitive, not counting on the reader to make connections. When someone yells or shoves somebody, we assume they're angry. Being shown and then told in great detail all the time makes the reading drag, so this book was a slow go for me. I believe this story could've been pulled of if it had been edited & chopped down by about 200 pages! I know that's harsh, but it's easier to read less than stellar writing and still appreciate the story if it's a quick read.

I'm giving it 2 stars because this appears to be written by a very young author and I see potential that wasn't quite tapped.

Not as good as I expcted

17 year-old Joe Grey has moved to a new town because of her mom's new job. Her immediate attraction to Tristan has her returning daily to the grave yard where they meet. Soon after arrival she finds out she'll be going to a boarding school and dreads leaving him. One fateful night will affect their future. Will Tristan and Joe be together?

I was pretty excited to get this book. I felt like the premise was good and looked forward to discovering the secret. The author was detailed oriented. There were very few errors. I felt the beginning of the book was really pretty good but I found I lost interest in the highschool drama about 1/2 way through. By that point, I just wanted to finish it.

I did struggle with this book for several reasons. One, I'm not 100% the author knew who she wanted her audience to be. Over all the language and story telling style seemed junior high'ish. The book focused a lot on the going's on at the highschool and highschool drama. But then she throws in minor sexual jokes and themes and alcohol use which, in my opinion, lends it to college age reader.

The other flaw with the book is the unrealistic and/or forced plot creations. For example, when she arrives to school she's accidentally assigned a boy's room. Not only doesn't she or the boy mind but her mom signs a release form to allow her to continue to share a room with a boy. Although times are changed from when I was young, but there's no way I'd been allowed to do that. Nor, despite being a tomboy, would I have been comfortable sharing a room with a boy I just met. That's just one example.

Overall, the book wasn't horrible. It just really needed to move along faster with less filler and have a more targeted audience. I wouldn't either encourage or discourage someone to read the book. I did noticed this is intended to be a trilogy, I'm not sure I'd read either of the two books.

Somewhat Entertaining But Too Ridiculous to Deserve a Higher Rating

I was never a fan of Stephenie Meyer despite her overwhelming fame brought on by the Twilight series. Thus, the tagline in the blurb did more damage than good when it comes to drawing my attention. But one can hardly ever walk away from a ghost story that easy, even though now I wish I had done just that.

Instead of being a heartbreaking mystery romance filled with suspense and tension, The Lost Boys is merely a cliched high school drama that uses ghosts as characters to explain away all the ridiculousness and absurdity one can undoubtedly recognize from the plot. It also suffers severely from the rather infamous trope of "everyone is drop dead gorgeous" by introducing characters that are simply too perfect to be true (This might have fooled and dazzled me in my earlier days, but no-no, not now). Though to Lilian Carmine's credit, she did manage to gain some of my respect by giving a few of them their unique personalities.

As a whole, I found The Lost Boys extremely lacking in the mystery department, but that is partially my own fault since nowhere in the synopsis has promised me anything of that nature. As a matter of fact, the biggest mystery has already been revealed before you even go into the book. Being a "romantic tale of a girl meets ghost", I spent more time than I wanted drowning in boredom while waiting for our MC, Joe, to find out that this handsome young boy she is secretly crushing on is actually a ghost. Even with this lengthy build up, their romance still felt halfhearted but interesting enough to keep me going.

For a 500+ pages book, The Lost Boys is surprisingly easy to read. It didn't give me the feeling of moving a mountain across my shoulders, but it could still be condensed further regardless. Particularly, a round of character elimination would be greatly beneficial as well as removing all the unnecessary subplots. Additionally, Carmine's writing also left much to be desired. Although quite readable, her lack of experience and skill with her craft is fairly obvious to notice, though nothing out of the norm to how you would usually expect from a debut author.

Without a doubt, The Lost Boys can be enjoyable for many others, so long as you have the proper mindset and expectations before starting it. But for me, it failed to provide excitement and unpredictability for which I was seeking. Nevertheless, I will probably check out the next book just to see how things have progressed, but that will be a story for another day.

In this lightweight, witty story, helpful animals find "room on the broom" of a generous witch. At first, a striped cat accompanies the cheerful sorceress: "How the cat purred/ and how the witch grinned,/ As they sat on their broomstick/ and flew through the wind." Next, a spotted dog retrieves the witch's flyaway black hat and asks to come aboard. The three riders soon welcome a green parrot (who finds the witch's lost hair ribbon) and a frog (who rescues her wand from the bottom of a pond). When threatened by a dragon, the loyal animals form a "Brementown Musicians" chimera whose "terrible voice,/ when it started to speak,/ was a yowl and a growl/ and a croak and a shriek." The witch repays them by conjuring a cushier vehicle. Donaldson and Scheffler, previously paired for The Gruffalo, emphasize the airborne animals' contentment and evoke sympathy for the broom's driver. In Scheffler's comical panels and insets, the witch has a warty nose and lace-up boots, but wears a pleasant smile; Donaldson puts a spooky/silly spin on the folktale format. The metrical rhyme and goofy suspense aren't groundbreaking, but readers will likely find it refreshing to see a witch playing against type. Ages 4-8.

K-Gr 3-A witch and her cat pick up a dog, a bird, and a frog, and fly off on her broomstick. The frog jumps for joy, the broomstick snaps in two, the animals land in a bog, and a dragon captures the witch. What to do? As in the Grimms' "The Bremen Town Musicians," the animals, covered in mud, stand on each other and "yowl," "growl," "croak," and "shriek," scaring the dragon and saving the witch. All's well that ends well for the witch conjures up a super broom with seats for the cat and dog, a nest for the bird, and a pool for the frog. The story is in rhyme, bouncing merrily along, full of fun, and not at all scary. The illustrations are witty and wonderful. All the characters, even the dragon, have the same goofy grin and large, round eyes. Dressed in a purple skirt, red blouse, and black cape and hat, the witch, with a long, ginger braid, is more friendly than frightening. The image of the red dragon carrying her, passed out cold, is a hoot. And her cat is not the traditional black cat; it looks more like a baby tiger. The result is a surefire read-aloud hit.

After checking out this book from the library, my son was requesting it daily. We couldn't wait to add it to our personal library permanently, but when it arrived, the text was different from the version we had grown to love.

Instead of the adorable text:
"A witch with french fries tastes delicious to me!" and "Just this once I'll have witch WITHOUT fries!"
we found the unappetizing text:
"And you, witch, look like a good supper to me" and "He said, 'I won't let you go, do you think I'm a fool?'"

Say what?!

Others have experienced the same thing, so please go and look at a physical copy in a book store instead of ordering through Amazon if you want to be guaranteed the original (and far superior!) version.

This copy is going back to Amazon, and I've already talked to Barnes and Noble about getting the correct version. It's worth the extra 3 bucks. The original version gets a perfect 5 star rating, but we are completely disappointed in what Amazon shipped to us.

Is there Room on the Broom for me??

I seriously love this story. I actually saw it on Netflix first and thought it was so adorable and cute. So when I found out that it was actually a childrens book of course I jumped on my trusty Amazon and ordered one right away.

I ordered the board book because I have an 18 month old that just LOVES the sound of paper ripping so the paperback probably not a good idea for a couple more years. Book came undamaged and a perfect size for me to read to my toddler.

He loves to point out the kitty and the puppy, and we are working on 'frog' and 'bird'. Such an adorable friendship story! Good for your own children or to give as a gift for a child under the age of 8.

This is also the same author as The Gruffalo which is another wonderful story! Both book AND claymation stories recommended. If fact, anything from Julia Donaldson!

I paid full price for this item and review it to give other buyers out there more information not listed and whether I would recommended it.

Order the BOARD BOOK! All the lines are correct in that version!

We had borrowed this book from our local library, and my autistic son loved it so much that he wanted me to read it every night. I decided we needed to find him a copy of his own. I saw some reviews that said that some of the lines had been changed. We got the board book and all the lines are correct. If you want a good copy of this book, order the board book, NOT the paperback or hardback!
