It's an ok book relatively speaking. The author is quite bias towards boundary layer methods to which the author is perhaps more comfortable with, rather than a more vigorous assessment of other methods.....

Good Reference Work--Core Collection Item

I'm amazed that no one has reviewed this yet. This reissue was published about ten years ago. I hunted down the old kicking mule copies via interlibrary loan years ago, and though the tab used on those original imprints was a bit odd, it was still readable. It's such a relief to see these arrangements in normal tab finally!

The book comes with a CD of the first Kicking Mule album, and that's almost worth the price of admission right there. I love those recordings--even if Art takes things a bit fast at times, he mixes up solos with a good choice of songs you're not liable to find anywhere else("Tennessee Line Hard Times", a variant of "Old Reuben"). One gripe is that they may as well have just added his second album as well for good measure.

I especially appreciate the mix of transcriptions of clawhammer with other picking styles. As much as we associate clawhammer with traditional banjo picking, there were other picking styles that pre-dated Scruggs. Art Rosenbaum seems to be the only one who gives these styles any air time. For example, I love Doc Boggs, and I learned a great deal about Boggs' style working out Art's transcription of "Country Blues"

If you're just a straight clawhammer player, I still think it's worth getting for those arrangments. The rest makes for a nice encyclopedia of oddball picking styles. So, I'll lead off with five stars.

Great overview of traditional banjo styles

I second the review above -- this a great collection of tunes and arrangements that also provides an excellent introduction to many of the lesser-known pre-bluegrass mountain styles of banjo playing. It is worth noting that the clawhammer tab, which takes up about 3/4 of the book, is definitely more sophisticated than the average beginner's guide to frailing. This is probably not the best book for the absolute beginner, although for musicians picking up the banjo for the first time it would most likely work. I would strongly recommend it to those looking to expand their old-time banjo repertoire beyond the basics.

Rich and varied in styles, tasty "settings" (arrangments)

It took me a while to hear the pun in the title, but this book is also very engagingly written--Art Rosenbaum's quite a skilled writer, in addition to his other talents. The tabs are deceptive in print--there are so many that you may think they're but perfunctory generic versions of each tune. Try a few, though, and you won't think that any more! Each one opens up that song for you on the banjo. If you want to add some variety to your playing of an old standby, for example, see the potpourri of versions of "Old Joe Clark" offered here (including Art's take on Wade Ward's version).

The cd is a treat too, although, like another reviewer, I'd have preferred a slightly slower pace on a couple of the songs. Some are just not as pretty as they are when played a little more slowly.

That looks like a Wildwood banjo on the cover, which is most apt. The mountains, I suppose, are to remind us that the music has long since spread beyond the Appalachians ...

About the Author
Anthony Champagne, Ph.D. in Political Science, University of Illinois, 1973, has research interests in judicial politics and in Congressional history. He is the author of Congressman Sam Rayburn, Sam Rayburn: A Bio-bibliography, and Judicial Politics in Texas: Partisanship, Money, and Politics in State Courts. He has won three University-wide teaching awards.

Edward J. Harpham is Associate Provost and Professor of Government and Political Economy at The University of Texas at Dallas. He also serves as the Director of Collegium V, UTD's honors program. He teaches courses in political theory, American government, and public policy. His research focuses upon the role that economic ideas play in modern political thought and their impact upon modern state institutions.

Get Ready to Learn a Lot About Texas!

This is actually a great Texas Gov book for Non-Texans and Texicans alike! Though the chapters seem fairly long, the author does a good job of covering the quagmire that is the constitution and political structure of Texas in a way that's actually digestible. I enjoyed the extra graph materials and the anecdotes at the beginning of each chapter. This thing could possibly also double as a Texas history book. I'm finding it easy to apply a lot of what I learned in this textbook to everyday living in Texas. Overall, a great resource!

Well, it's a required textbook. The authors do a good job of staying neutral about their political views as which they should in a text book. It's an easy read, so if it's required for your class, you'll do fine.

About the Author

Larry Neal is Professor of Economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is the author of The Rise of Financial Capitalism (1991) and The Economics of the European Union and the Economies of Europe (OUP, 1998). He was the editor of Explorations in Economic History from 1991 to 1998.

Rondo Cameron was the William Rand Kenan Professor of Economics and History at Emory University. He was the 1991 recipient of the Editor's Award for Exceptional Books for the first edition of A Concise Economic History of the World. He authored or co-authored several books, including The European World (1970) and Civilizations: Western and World (1975), and was the coeditor of International Banking 1870-1914 (OUP, 1991).

Concise, informative and extremely well written

This is one of the best books on economic history that I have read. This book is an excellent start for a person interested in economic history: it is well written, it is well structured, and overall fun to read. This book is an excellent overview and a very good guide. One thing for sure: it's an excellent way to spend your time. It enriched my knowledge of economics and history and became a good companion.

Eurocentric, but focused

Don't expect "A concise economic history of the world" from Cameron's work. Do expect, however, an excellent account of Europe's economic history. If you want a more global, less "economic" account of the pre-modern world, try Janet Abu-Lughod. As for the modern world, a synthesis of Cameron and Asian experts would provide the comprehensive picture Cameron's title implies.

The total economic history of the world in laymans words

Rondo Cameron certainly explains the hold economic history of the world. Rondo takes you from the ages before Christ to the twenthieth century. Why did the Roman Empire went down?, Why Spain was not able to achieve higher levels of economical well-being despite their big colonies overseas?: Questions like these are answered in Rondo's excellent book. If a man wants to forsee the future, he has to go back and learn where he comes from. Economics and History were successfully married in the book, so historians, economists and financiers will find it helpfull.

Beginning with the premise that understanding personal family history is essential for making informed choices, McGoldrick, director of the Family Institute of New Jersey, offers an innovative method of combining genealogical research with self-awareness. An exploration of family history, according to the author, is done by plotting a "genogram," which is a family tree spanning three generations. Genograms of famous families provided here?Roosevelts, Brontes, Freuds and others?illustrate McGoldrick's thesis that all families have repetitive patterns such as illegitimacy or suicide that have been hidden from descendants. Understanding one's family patterns makes it possible, McGoldrick claims, to connect with one's ancestors and to recreate better family relationships for oneself. Included are many suggestions for obtaining and interpreting the information necessary to plot your own genogram. Illustration.

"Learning about your family heritage can free you to change your future," according to family therapist McGoldrick (Genograms in Family Assessment, Norton, 1985). Here she explores family patterns of birth order, sibling rivalry, family myths and secrets, couple relationships, class, cultural differences, suicide, and loss. McGoldrick believes that, when viewed properly, these patterns suggest that many repeated family experiences are not entirely coincidental. The key tool used is the genogram-a sort of annotated family tree that maps out family information, which she illustrates by mapping the genograms of several famous families. Questions at the end of each chapter prove to be extremely useful in aiding the reader to uncover family information that was previously clandestine, seemingly irrelevant, or simply overlooked. Although the writing is a bit dry at times-apparently targeting the educated lay reader and professional-general readers will find that this book is very helpful in researching and understanding family information and patterns of behavior. Recommended for marriage and family studies collections in academic as well as public libraries.

About the Author
Professor David Ricketts qualified at Guy’s Hospital Dental School, now GKT Kings College, in 1986. Following an Oral Surgery House Officer post and two years in general practice he returned to Guy’s Hospital to study for an MSc in conservative dentistry. During this period his main research interest in cariology and, in particular, its diagnosis and appropriate management began which led to the award of a PhD in 1995. David has since published widely in his research area and in other aspects of restorative dentistry and his research has led to collaboration with colleagues in numerous European countries and the USA. In 1999 David moved to Dundee and was promoted to Senior Lecturer / Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in 2003. In 2006 he became Leader of the Section of Operative Dentistry, Fixed Prosthodontics and Endodontology at Dundee Dental School and in 2008 he was awarded a personal Chair in Cariology and Conservative Dentistry.

Professor David Bartlett is Head of Prosthodontics at Kings College London Dental Institute. His research interest in tooth wear, particularly dental erosion, began with his PhD completed in 1995 which investigated the relationship between reflux disease and dental erosion. David has published over 70 research articles on dental erosion and other restorative subjects in National and International dental and medical journals. He has supervised four PhD’s, 20 MSc’s and been successfully awarded nearly half a million pounds in grant income. David has written three books and a number of chapters on prosthodontics.
