Strictly a bathroom reader

Any fans of stand-up comedy will like the idea of this book, one section for each aspect of comedy. But unfortunately it falls into the same trap most comedy books: It's tries to be funny first and interesting second.

There's little substance, just jokes, and very few times I really laughed. Reading this from front to back is ill-advised, put it next to the can and read a few pages while you're dropping the kids off at the pool.

BTW, there's a book-on-tape out on this book where popular comedians read out chapters of the book in front of audiences. It's also kinda Zzzz....: [...]

I don't do this thing

I don't do book reviews, I don't do surveys, I'm really lazy. But, for this book? For this book, I will take three minutes to write my first ever book review. It will be short. Ready? This is the funniest book I have ever read in my entire life. Sure, it could just be a crazy coincidence that the humor of the authors is the exact humor I like, but I think that anyone will find this book funny. I read the book over the course of a month so as to savor it, and I read 5 pages a night, and I laughed every single night, and 3/4ths of the nights I laughed till I had tears in my eyes. I'm cynical and not humored easily. But this book is incredibly funny.

For almost thirteen-year-old Bethany, life has suddenly and unexplicably taken a strange turn. For a girl who has never spent a night away from her parents, she's suddenly hustled into the car by her sad-looking father, subjected to listening to her sobbing mother, and unceremoniously dropped off in the middle of the night in a town she's never heard of, at the home of a woman claiming to be her Aunt Myrlie. Her parents are a lot older than her friend's parents, and Bethany is sure that her parent's siblings are all dead. So who is this woman claiming to be her Aunt, and why has she never heard of her before? Why won't her mother stop crying? Why does her dad seem so eager to get away from the house in Sanderfield? And who the heck is Elizabeth, the name she overheard her father and Myrlie discussing?

All these questions and more are only the tip of the iceberg in Margaret Peterson Haddix's newest novel, a wonderful young adult thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed. The twists and turns are unpredictable and unexpected--the conclusion one I never saw coming.

Overall, a great suspenseful read for teens and adults alike!

The book is just amazing. One of Margaret Peterson Haddix's best books. As Bethany finds out about her past and her parents past, one is just electrified, in a good way.
I liked how Margaret Peterson Haddix surprises you with every turn, much like J.K Rowling's Harry Potter.
I would suggest this book to kids in middle school.

purchased for daughter aged 12. Her reading varies from anime, greek mythology, to percy jackson books. She had to read this particular book for school. she enjoyed the twist and turns of the story. she highly recommends it.

Larry W. Mays is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Arizona State University where he was the chair of the department. He was formerly Director of the Center for Research in Water Resources at the University of Texas at Austin where he also held an Engineering Foundation Endowed Professorship. A registered engineer in seven states and a professional hydrologist, he has served as a consultant to many organizations. Professor Mays is author of Water Resources Engineering (John Wily & Sons) and Optimal Control of Hydrosystems (Marcel Dekker), co-author of Applied Hydrology and Hydrosystems Engineering and Mangement (both from McGraw-Hill) and editor-in-chief of the Water Resources Handbook, Hydraulic Design Handbook, Water Distribution Systems Handbook, Stormwater Collection Systems Design Handbook, and the Urban Water Supply Handbook (all from McGraw-Hill). The Urban Water Supply Handbook received the 2002 Honorable Mention in Engineering Award given by the Association of American Publishers. He is also editor-in-chief of Reliability Analysis of Water Distribution Systems (ASCE) and co-editor of Computer Modeling of Free Surface and Pressurized Flow (Kluwer Academic Publishers). Among his honors is a distinguished alumnus award from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1999.

An Excellent Text

I use this text to teach a first-semester graduate class for civil engineers who are targeting a graduate degree with emphasis on hydrology. I've been using the text for nearly ten years. It might be a little advanced for undergraduates, but certainly is in the grasp of advanced undergraduate students.

Applied Hydrology is the text I wanted way back when I was in graduate school. Chow was still alive but had not finished the book. I was introduced to his writing in his open-channel hydraulics text, which I thought (and still think) is the best. Applied Hydrology was assembled posthumously by Maidment and Mays, who did a good job putting together whatever remained of Chow's work. I'm very glad they undertook the process and published the work. It's an important text for my discipline specialty.

Part 1 of the text covers the basics and does it well. This material is timeless and will not change much as new research comes available. Part 2 covers analysis and shows its age, just a bit. Unit hydrographs and lumped-flow routing are old technologies and while updates are inevitable, the basic technologies will not change. Chapters 9 and 10 are a bit dated as substantial work has been done over the last 15 years. They're still good, but require supplementation. Chapters 11 and 12 again contain great fundamentals but the technology is changing. The theory of linear moments (L-moments) is working its way into hydrologic statistics for fitting distributions to datasets. Furthermore, there is a trend toward using resistant statistics (median, inter-quartile range, and others) for description of the statistics of hydrologic datasets. Part 3 on hydrologic design is still good, but is also showing its age just a little. Again, the basics are great and well-explained. However, as new data become available and new analyses of those data are accomplished, new interpretations also become available. This is true especially with precipitation atlases and the estimation of n-year precipitation events, and hence n-year hydrologic events.

My observations are not an indictment of Applied Hydrology; it remains my favorite engineering hydrology textbook and I will continue to use it to teach engineers about hydrology. In my opinion, this is the best upper-undergrauate/graduate engineering hydrology text available. Like all textbooks, it is beginning to show its age because technology is not stagnant. But its descriptions of core concepts and the application thereof remains top notch.

a must for water resource engineers and students

I took a hydrology course taught by one of the authors (Larry Mays) using this book. Advantages of this book lies in (1) the arrangement of the contents is very logic-oriented, you don't feel aburpt jump from one chapter to another one, (2) the theory addressed in the text is concise, easy to read and understand, (3) the examples used to illustrate the theories are very correlated. Other books may be good too, however, in terms of "hydrology" alone, I haven't seen a better one. It is a useful reference for your understanding of hydrologic design manual, creteria.

EXCELLENT BOOK

A must have reference for those of you guys in the field of Applied Hydrology. If you are tackling the task of modeling some particular hydrologic process, you will find the detailed descriptions and flow charts very handy. Step by step derivations of equations, excellent referencing and convenient chapter setup makes this book a first-to-look reference. Although it is a 1988 print, you will hardly feel it unless you really dig into details like flow routing in meandering rivers.

About the Author
William E. Prentice, PhD, PT, ATC, FNATA is recognized as an author, educator, and clinician. He received both BS and MS degrees from the University of Delaware, a PhD degree in sports medicine and applied physiology from the University of Virginia, and BSPT degree in physical therapy from the University of North Carolina. He is a Professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, and has served as the Program Director of the NATA Accredited Post-Professional Athletic Training Education Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 1980. He started his career as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Temple University prior to beginning his PhD at Virginia. He also served for 10 years as the Director of Sports Medicine Education for the Healthsouth Corporation.

Dr. Prentice is the author of 49 editions of nine different textbooks most notably Principles of Athletic Training, Essentials of Athletic Injury Management, Athletic Training: An Introduction to Professional Practice, Therapeutic Modalities in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training, Rehabilitation Techniques in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training, Therapeutic Modalities for Physical Therapists, Musculoskeletal Intervention: Techniques for Therapeutic Exercise, and Get Fit, StayFit. He has published more than 95 journal articles and abstracts, and has made more than 200 lectures and presentations. Prentice served as the athletic trainer for the Women’s Soccer Program at the University of North Carolina for 26 years since 1980 and during that period the team won 17 NCAA and 1 AIAW National Championships.

Dr. Prentice has been the recipient of numerous awards from the NATA, including most notably the Sayers “Bud” Miller Distinguished Athletic Training Educator Award in 1999; the Educational Multimedia Committee Videotape Production Award in 1997; and the Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award in 1999. In 2004, Dr. Prentice was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers Association's Hall of Fame. In 2006, the NATA established the William E. Prentice Scholarship that is presented annually in his name. In 2008, Dr. Prentice was selected in the inaugural class as an NATA Fellow. In 2012, Dr. Prentice was inducted into the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainer’s Association Hall of Fame.

I've seen this information before. It's based upon statistics of 27 parameters which give percentages of over 7000+ races. It only makes sense that higher than normal percentages will put you closer to a possible outcome. Many of these being "chalk" horses. It then gives 18 rules to follow when making a final decision which includes races to stay away from. I gave it 3 stars because the information is useful to people wanting to know the basics about thoroughbred racing. But the outcome isn't "written in stone" even though the author believes one can make a good living off of his concepts. Makes for a good read and may improve one's handicapping prowless.

My immediate reaction to Christopher Paolini's newest book: Is this a blue edition of "Dragonology"?

No, apparently it's "Eragon's Guide to Alagaesia," a rather bare-bones encyclopedia of the history, peoples, creatures and assorted trivia of Christopher Paolini's imaginary world. The text doesn't tell the readers much that the books haven't also told them, but it's a prettily arranged book with some extremely impressive pictures and intriguing clarifications of known facts (like what the heck a shrrg is).

It opens with a little envelope with a letter from Paolini's protagonist, promising to show readers more about Alagaesia. After a brief welcome page, Paolini explores the various aspects of his imaginary world, each with their own little section: Alagaesia's maps and cities, geographical features (the Forest of Stone), plants (the Fricai Andiat mushrooms), animals (the dragonesque fanghur), the dragons and the Dragon-riders, the city of Tronjheim and the forest of Ellesmera, and so on and so forth.

It also studies the various bipedal races of Alagaesia, and (of course) the Elves are vastly overrepresented -- humans and Urgals each get one page, while the Elves get four and the Dwarves get two. Paolini also informs readers about their weapons, their homes, their language (complete with a very short fold-out "Dwarvish/Elvish for Beginners"), their clothes, and unique qualities like Isidar Mithrim (I still don't understand why it was so high up).

If you've read the books of the "Inheritance" series, then you probably will know about 95% of the information contained in "Eragon's Guide to Alagaesia." It's a prime opportunity for Paolini to expand his universe with historical, magical and character information that wouldn't fit neatly in a novel, but would work nicely in a guide. Buuuuuut... he doesn't do this. Almost all of what he tells us is in his novels -- the Menoa Tree, Blagden, and anybody hoping for New Cool Revelations will be disappointed.

But he does expand some stuff -- there's a rather bare-bones timeline of Alagaesian history, an interesting section on Dwarf mythology and gods, and he finally tells us just what "shrrgn" are.

And while the actual info is lackluster, there are some truly lovely illustrations in this book -- lovely watercolors and pencil drawings, ranging from pale pencil sketches to full-page color pictures (like Glaedr and Saphira). You can tell which creatures are evil, like the Empire dragons, the Kull and the Lethrblaka -- they're all black'n'white, spiny and scabby-looking. The highlights are the vast pictures of Ellesmera and Tronjheim -- the former is a grassy, misty-green tangle of lacy dwellings and tree houses reminiscent of Peter Jackson's Lothlorien; the latter is an epic view of the sunlit, glittering city in a circle of light, surrounded darkness, shadows, farmland and rolling clouds.

Physically, this book is made in the "Dragonology" mold -- faux scale cover, faux gems, shiny "gedway ignasia" and lots of little pockets, envelopes, fold-out sections, and hidden items (fur, a polyester flower, an elf token, paper dragon-knucklebones, "jewel" glitter dust) as well as some "letters" from Eragon to the reader.

"Eragon's Guide to Alagaesia" is essentially a glittery bonus for Paolini collectors, because virtually all of the information is pretty much old news (we KNOW the Menoa tree story!). But it has lovely, lovely pictures.

Cool design but it lacks content and has an abundance of cheesiness.

First off i want to say i LOVE the Inheritance cycle so far. Great books, well written, and well thought out. Now the review of this book.

I was really disappointed with this book. I thought it would clear up some things and maybe give me some incite into the next book.

I'm not normally a negative person but this was a real letdown.

The information:
Even someone who has read the books just once will know everything in this book. Personally i think this book damaged my opinion of Paolini being a detailed and in-depth writer.

The art:
To me it seemed fairly obvious that several of the contributing artists either had not read the books at all or they just totally ignored all of Paolini's descriptions. One of the artists must have been a mega fantasy/World of Warcraft artist because he gave all this art spikes jutting out at every angle. In the end most of his art ended up looking more like i sticker bush than what it was intended to be.

The Cheesiness:
Really? A patch of Feldonost fur(a little piece of some fuzzy fur you can feel)? Also right under the fur it goes on to say that the Feldonost grow wool which is totally different from fuzzy fur. Their depiction of a gedwey ignasia is a hand print with a perfect oval, silver sticker in the middle. They also put in a little dragon wing to feel(glitter glued to paper). This is not only cheesy but wrong because dragon wing is described as suede leather in the books not sandpaper. Last but not least is Glader's heart of hearts(a small plastic jewl in the back of the book).

If you've read the books you wont learn anything. Unless you are reading the books to your 4 year old kids and need a visual aid this book isn't worth it.

Gorgeous coffee table book!

I just got this and absolutely love it. I can't believe it was done for this price. The cover is truely a work of art and I am going to buy another one for a gift. I didn't get it to glean information as I can use the internet for that after reading the books. Looking through this book is certainly a temptation for those who have not read the books as I already had someone look at mine and borrow my copy of Eragon. The pictures are beautiful and lots of clever and well done little booklets and secrets inside. I am impressed. I suppose if you buy it to learn something that is not in the books, perhaps you might be disappointed, but that wasn't my purpose. I love the beauty of this story and this book illustrates that very well. It is displayed on my sofa table with a blue dragon statue - looks great!

I also liked the way it was done as if Eragon himself was sharing the information with us. Great idea.

This is NOT the book for NetSuite newbies!

The book is nearly unusable if you do not already know NetSuite. For example, I wanted to add a user. After half a day bouncing between the index and the content, I eventually called a friend for help. The only reason I do not give it one star is that NetSuite itself is such an alien experience that I do not believe the book's badness can be entirely attributed to the book.

Don't bother buying this book

I waited for over 2 years for this book to come out (Netsuite has no manual- it's all on-line videos "webinars" or search the support index only). We have used NetSuite for our business for several years, but I know we don't use it nearly to it's strengths... and, since I am not great at figuring out "how the software categorizes my questions" I had really looked forward to a manual with at least a scannable index.
While this has an index, entries are limited to 1 page explanations of how to "personalize" the image on your screen- this book is totally worthless if you actually want to learn about how to use the software.

Useful for new users

NetSuite is a vast system with CRM, ERP, E-commerce, PSA, Customer Service capabilities all inclusive to it. Over the years I have learned it the hard-way - by using it and through the usergroup and the online documentation. I was excited to see the book finally get published and often use it now as a training aid when teaching others about NetSuite.

Bottom line - great resource for new users getting started with NetSuite.
