The Wayfinding Bible

I was fortunate enough to meet Paul Arthur and have dinner at his house in Toronto when I invited him to be part of a presentation on accessible signage I was giving at the annual international convention of the International Sign Association. He was a pioneer in the use of pictographic symbols for wayfinding, but this book is about much more than symbol signs. It was written before the ADA signage standards became widely known, and of course Paul was from Canada, so their codes, which he helped write, were a little different. He makes the subject, in all its complexity, seem entertaining. You get caught up in the beginning pages as he follows someone trying to catch a train on time, and you are hooked -- or at least I was! You might also want to check out his posthumously published book, "Wayfinding: PictograhicSystems / Noverbal. Universal." The publisher is Focus Strategic Communications Incorporated, 1905, Ontario, Canada.

The format of this "S/S in action" book has changed

The “B-58 Hustler in Action” is a big surprise to me. It is published by Squadron Signal but the inside format is completely different from the earlier S/S in Action books. There are a good number of pictures but no profile drawing and only half a page of “general” description of the B-58. The rest of the books are all pictures (with captions). Unlike earlier “in Action” format, there is no description of any sub-variants. So essentially it is just a picture book. I miss the earlier S/S in action books like the F-105 Thunderchief in Action (#185) and the B-26 Marauder in Action (#210).

I was extremely disappointed in the new format that Squadron has taken

I will echo Yip W.'s post. I was extremely disappointed in the new format that Squadron has taken, which is to make this a picture book rather than one involving pictures that enhance the text. I own over forty 'In Action" books because I am a model builder - mostly fighters and bombers. The older format gave a simplified technical and service history of the plane, which was great for those who were interested in the aircraft, but didn't understand much of the engineering terms. In addition, the older books were replete with comparative drawings of the improvements with each variation; ie., nose cones, ejection seats, rudders, etc. There is hardly any text associated with this book and absolutely no comparative drawings or 3-views. One of the major developments of the B-58 was the capsule ejection seat. There are a few photos of it, but no pictures or drawings on how it worked. I had to go online to have my questions answered.

The upside of the book is that there are many, many color photos, which is fantastic for the modeler. The downside is that if the modeler wants to deviate from the boxed kit (say make a variation), the modeler will need another resource. If Squadron would have combined both formats, color photos with text and sketches, the book would earn five stars from me.

Very nicely done, a must have for any fan of this remarkable aircraft

This book is an excellent addition to my or anyone's library of aviation books covering this remarkable aircraft. At first glance it appeared as just another picture book, light on descriptive text but that is not the case. The pictures are all excellent studies of the Hustler, clear, bright, many in color with detailed captions. I must say, a book about an airplane that first flew almost 60 years ago, that still looks futuristic today and carries an air of mystery about its short operational service life may seem not needed, it is quite the contrary. The more information disclosed about the B-58 the more one sees just how advanced and a technical marvel, not to mention an outstanding strategic weapons system the B-58 was. Many times the B-58 is ignored or overlooked in aviation articles but with this release that is remedied very nicely. Thank you Mr. Doyle.

Excellent Resource for Writers

If you've ever visited Bryn's website, you might already be familiar with some of her lists for writers. I love lists in general (proud Type-A), but she does more than just jot down quick lists. The lists in this book are detailed and categorized to create a fantastic reference book for writers. Sure, you could grab a thesaurus to try and find a better verb and spend hours flipping through it because none of them quite fit, or you could go right to this book and search by the emotion or action your character needs to convey.

In addition to word lists, the book has an extensive section on names - first AND last that includes their origins. No need to google the latest list of baby names when you can just open this book and find the perfect character names to fit into the time period of your book.

One of my favorite parts about the book are the plot lists. There are pages and pages of suggestions for action plots, romance plots, family plots, workplace plots. Every writer knows the only way to get better at writing is to write as often as possible. Grab this book, flip it open to one of the plot lists and use it for prompts. Or use the word lists as a jumping off point.

Another great thing about this book is reading the lists made me think of things I could add to them. If you ever feel like you're stuck, just read through one of the sections and it'll get your mind spinning with possibilities. I recommend this book for all writers. You'll be happy to have it close at hand.

Great writing tool

Being a writer I was very excited when I found out about this book. Often, your brain needs a little help with expressing certain ideas or feelings. The book didn't disappoint. Extremely thorough and in the whole well organized. I have already used it while writing and I am certain it will hold a special place in my writing toolbox.

Bryn's collection of Master Lists is a fabulous heuristic tool. No more wracking your brain for the right turn of phrase -- Bryn has sorted and compiled everything from descriptive phrases, to plot summaries, to character traits and names... Writer's block? Just run your eye down one of Bryn's lists to discover a new jumping off point.

Of course, no book is going to do the work for you -- a writer has to write. But this resource is wonderful for helping the writer easily sift through word choices, compare connotations, or find new direction. Many thanks, Bryn, for putting these lists together! I know they will be consulted over and over.

Extremely comprehensive but could use more practice questions

This book systematically organizes every GMAT CR question type into "families," with each family possessing its own set of characteristics. Such an organization facilitates a better understanding of each question type because you know what to look for after you finish reading each question. I've gone through the book once already but am going through it one more time to make sure I really absorb the material.

Also, the book actually breaks down the concept of an argument and helps you understand the building blocks of an argument in order to be able to attack any question by following the same rules. There's no discussion of cheap tricks to try to find correct answers. This book is an absolute must if you hope to master critical reasoning on the GMAT. It's especially helpful for people like me who are weak in this part of the verbal section because you are given a step-by-step process for approaching every question. Despite the differences in question types, almost every question can be attacked in a similar manner. So it's good to see a book that focuses on the fundamentals of argumentation.

The only reason I knocked off one star is because this book could use some more practice questions. There are 50 practice questions, but I don't feel like that's enough. This book should be used in conjunction with the Official Guide.

Ultimate Answer to Your Critical Reasoning Needs

==== 2015 UPDATE ====
Powerscore released a new 2015 edition of the book. It has had some updates - several chapters have been completely updated with new overview, examples and new problem sets. Navigation has also been improved. It has grown too by about 70 pages (in part due to having more white space and in part due to content). Not a light book at 370 pages but definitely very very comprehensive overview of pretty much everything. Don't expect to see too much fluff, the book gets right to it. Though after MGMAT has improved their CR book (currently in its 6th edition), I would have given this book 3-4 stars, the latest revision seems to provide a good alternative to the Veritas Prep/MGMAT books.

==== 2009 Review ====
Though pretty similar to Manhattan GMAT book, it offers more practice questions in the book and has a slightly better overview of the Critical Reasoning questions.

~~~ Strengths: ~~~
1. In-depth overview of the Critical Reasoning strategies and approaches to questions
2. Clearly divides the CR question types and provides specific strategy for each type as well as the pitfalls and common errors. You will also get to know how the CR questions are made.
3. Good quality GMAT-like practice questions
4. Created by the authors of the best LSAT books (LSAT logic section is much harder than CR on the GMAT; there is actually a decent amoount of overlap in this book with the LSAT book). Speaking of which, for extra hardcore (and absolutely not necessary but still), you can get the PowerScore LR book (comes with quite a few LSAT questions)

~~~ Weaknesses: ~~~
1. Could use more practice questions (more than mgmat though); you will need to find another source of CR questions such as GMAT Official guide 12 or the verbal supplement to the Official Guide (though the verbal OG has questions on the easier side)
2. Some explanations are too convoluted
3. No tests or online excercises/additional content

~~~~ My Suggestions ~~~~
- Read explanations to every question. Even if you got a question right, it does not mean, you solved it correctly (that is you used the correct approach or found all the shortcusts). You will be surpised sometimes and will pick up helpful tips even from explanations of questions you answered correctly
- Follow the actual strategies (DUH). This is probably the most common mistake people make - they start inventing their own approaches. Don't do it until you have a high verbal score. If you don't, just follow!
- If you don't have any Manhattan GMAT books, you want to get at least one, as each comes with access to 6 online CAT tests (these tests are worth the purchase). There is not a whole lot of value to get both Powerscore CR and MGMAT CR; the content is by large the same.

A wholesmome book about Gregor Mendel

There are a lot of stories about Mendel and how he discovered the heredity. This book by Orel clears all the doubts. Mendel was a great philosopher, his experiments were well planned and he had a clear understanding about what he was doing. It appears that he observed the segregation of characters very carefully and selected the seven characters and the pea plant for his experiments. He was also a great plant biologists and a bio statistician. I believe that he repeated the experiments several times to formulate the laws of inheritance. It is sad that the scientists during that period failed to understand the significance of his findings and refused to honor him with due credit. A great book for all geneticists and biologists who want to know about the history of Mendelian theory of inheritance.
