So I bought this book thinking it was going to give me some ideas on mayan or Aztec tattoos but it has almost nothing about mayan or Aztec work, just a bunch of cholo style pictures and drawings so if you want a book to get some tattoo ideas that have to do with Aztec or mayan please do yourself a favor and don't buy this book!!!!!

Mostly beautiful

I enjoy and am inspired by tight, precise, technically perfect and imaginative drawing... owning and viewing such work fills my gut with a actual physical happiness that I try like hell to reproduce with my own work, on paper and skin, and only sometimes succeed---- so I'm going to rate this book by percentages on how much of it makes the grade. About 40% of the large and beautifully reproduced pages are filled with the kind of work that really kick my ass, the masterful stuff that truly deserves to be there. Another 40% is good stuff, done well enough... and the remaining 20% is mostly dreck that should never have seen print--- just as expert artwork inspires me , crappy stuff offends me.
Having said all that, this book is inspired by tattooing, but is not meant as a flash book, ready to show customers. It could serve as a spring board for ideas for custom work though. If you are looking for excellent VATO style designs, I would highly recommend BOOG's big 148 page flash book, ready to trace off and make a stencil. This book is for your ART BOOK shelf ( mine is bulging already...)

I ordered this book to learn more about Julene figurines. I am reading it from the beginning. It has beautiful color pictures of various Hawaiian art objects from paintings to whale teeth. A great way to learn about Hawaiian history.

Great Reference Book

I bought this book for my ninth grader who was taking honor geometry. This reference provides the steps to the solution not just answers. Several instances where my son was stuck on a specific problem, cannot seem to go to the next homework assignment. Using this answer key, he understood the thinking process, applied it to others and able to move forward. He also used it to ensure he correctly worked others. Since homework is graded on completion, not on how many problems were correctly worked, having this reference does not annotate cheating. The back of the school book has answers to the odd problems. This reference provides all solutions. Having this book is close to having a tutor sitting next to you when you are doing homework, but lots cheaper.

One reviewer stated that it's a waste of money when you can ask your teacher. Don't get me wrong, my son's math teacher is great and very responsive in answering questions, email or otherwise. However, immediate communications when my son is stuck on a problem while doing his homework is unreasonable expectation. When my son has a string of problems to do, able to sit down on concentrate on completing problems, having correct method to work challenging problems through immediately, helps in allowing continued concentration and helps him to understand concepts fully and quickly. Waiting for an answer, whether it be several hours or the next day fragments that concentration. Understanding the concept on his own, albeit with assistance of this guide, gave him the confident that he can independently worked through concepts, not having to have his teacher to hold his hand every steps of the way. There were still many instances where he needed assistance from his teacher. But this reference allowed him to work more problems on his own.

I would highly recommend this reference book.

This book was not what I needed, I was looking for a solutions manual, something that would show how the problems were solved, this book only had the answers for the odd number question and only the answers to the those question, it was the same as the back of the text book. Not what I was looking for.

Making Sense of the Whole Issue....

Gilbert Bilezikian is a professor at Wheaton College and, as I understand it, one of the leading pro-female voices among conservative "bible-believing" Christians. ("Bible-believing" is in quotes because I dispute the implication of this phrase that non-fundamentalists are not bible-believing.)
Your appreciation of this book will almost undoubtedly rest first and foremost with the bias that you bring with you. If, like me, you were brought up in a fundamentalist church and learnt your bible, and saw massive contradictions between what the bible said and what the church interpreted it as saying, this is the book for you. How do the concepts of rulership-over and command leadership square with Paul's statement that no one individual should take priority over others in the church? Why were there women preachers and teachers in Paul's church if he was opposed to them? Why did Paul tell women to be quiet in one letter and then say "there is neither male nor female" in another? This book answers these questions and makes sense of all these questions. Quite apart from the issue of the role of women in the church, the book is also a beautiful biblical exposition of how God intends all human beings to live together in His name.
The book only misses out on five stars because it could have been edited and laid out a bit better. Close to one-third of the book is footnotes, but the visual lay-out of the entire book is poor and it's difficult to refer back to key ideas easily. Take good notes!

one of the strangest experiences I ever had

Reading this book was one of the STRANGEST experiences I have ever had as a born again Christian evangelical. I started out reading this book being a man who was taught to believe in benign patriarchy, breaking ties and such.

I tossed out easily 2/3 of what the book said as not making much sense, at least to me where I was at at the time. But the remaining 1/3 I could not answer and it stewed in me. After wrestling with this 1/3 for a few weeks and praying a lot, it was like scales fell off my eyes and I jumped the fence and became a Biblical egalitarian. So my recommendation is to NOT stop reading this book, just because you come to something to disagree with, keep reading it and note the points you do NOT yet have answers for.

Fair-Minded Exegetical Support of Egalitarian Sex Roles

Bilezekian has written a charitable, fair-minded examination of key biblical texts dealing with the relationship of men and women both in marriage and within the church. Contrary to the reviews of others, he does not focus on Genesis alone. Rather, he progresses from Genesis and the Old Testament writings generally to the New Testament in which he focuses on Jesus' engagement with women, followed by the role of women in early Christian communities as documented in the rest of the New Testament.

There are three basic ways to engage the Bible's teachings on men and women:

1) Ignore the Bible completely. This won't work for Christians who want to take the Bible seriously (and conservative fundamentalists are NOT the only Christians to take the Bible seriously).

2) Complementarian: men and women are equal but have different roles in church and marriage, namely, men are the leaders of their families, women submit to husbands, and are the only legitimate spiritual leaders in the church. Represented by folks like John Piper and Mark Driscoll.

3) Egalitarian: men and women are equal and have shared roles in church and marriage. Men are not the leaders in families; rather, husbands and wives mutually submit to one another. In the church, men and women may both function as spiritual leaders. Represented not only by Bilezekian but also Ben Witherington III and Scot McKnight.

There are some unfortunate trends in reviews (especially Amazon reviews) of this book. First, some reviewers essentially say, "He disagrees with my complementarian position, so he must be wrong." That's not an argument; it's a circle of illogic. Second, some reviewers simply quote the contested passages as if that settles things. Read "the plain sense" of Scripture, they say. That's the problem, dear friends: well-meaning Christians have tried to get a "plain sense" and come away with two "senses" or interpretations.

I only give the book 4 stars instead of 5 because it can be a little dense reading at times, despite Bilezekian's best attempts to be accessible to non-academics. Overall, very good, very solid, very clear.
