Hart describes with equal clarity the erosion of land to form river basins and the workings of a coal mine. He charts shifting patterns of crop rotation, from the medieval rota of food (wheat or rye), feed (barley or oats), and fallow (to restore the land) to modern two-crop cycle of corn and soybeans, made possible by fertilizers and pesticides. He comments on traditions of land division (it is almost impossible to find a straight line on a map of Europe) and inventories a variety of farm structures (from hop yards and oast houses to the use of dikes for irrigation). He identifies the relict features of the landscape―from low earthen terraces once used in the southern United States to prevent erosion to old bank buildings that have become taverns and barns turned into human homes. Carrying the story of the rural landscape into our frantic era, he describes the "bow wave"where city life meets rural agriculture and plots the effect of recreation and its structures on the look of the land.

Very perceptive book on how people from different backgrounds have totally different views about themselves and others.

The letters in the title refer to the letters that guests write home from a Paris Frenchwomen's boarding home, expressing opinions on the other guests in the house. The characters in this small book are: a single New Enlgand young lady travelling alone, an American mother and daughter, a British brother and sister, a German doctor and the French cousin of the owner of the house. Very perceptive and on the mark. Great read if you are interested on how cultural prejudices affect our view on virtually the same people.

what even is this?

Even though I had already read and disliked "A Portrait of a Lady", I decided to give James another try. Disappointing. There is absolutely no plot, nothing happens, no comedy, no romance. I only finished it since I wanted to grow my read pile and reach my goal, and it is a really short epistolary novel. I wouldn't recommend this at all.

A must have

If you want to play jazz, you must have this book. It's just that simple. If you only have money for one book, this should be it. To take advantage of this book, you must be able to read bass clef and you must be able to understand chord notation.

If you go to any jazz open jam, you'll see people these real books. The horn players will have the Eb or Bb ones, piano guys will have the C one, singers will have the one with the lyrics on it. Once on the bandstand, you will hear someone saying "Let's play the tune XYZ on page 123". You will open this book and glance through the changes. With some study, you will know what to do, even if you never saw the tune before.

But to do this you'll need this book. To improvise on any tunes you will need to know the melody from this book. It is also great for practise reading.

You can recognize the guys that practise a lot when you see their real books are falling apart.

I saw some people with the xerox copy of this. Call me naive, but if you consider how many authors spent their lifetime writing these songs, it is well worth the thirty bucks or so that Amazon charges for it. Also, I get paid to play these tunes. Why shouldn't the authors or their estates get paid as well? At least this is how I feel.

Very good, with 1 caveat and 1 comment

This is an excellent book, and you can't beat the Amazon price. I paid full cover price (50% more) at a local music shop. As far as content goes, what you see is what you get with this book.

Caveat: As someone new to jazz, I assumed the bass clef edition meant I would get the bass line (I play bass guitar). But instead it is the melody, shown in bass clef. Since the melody line is not usually played by bass guitar, it doesn't do much for me. Instead I rely on the chords, which are clearly shown, and improvise walking bass lines based on the chords.

Comment: As a beginner to jazz, I don't have a band that is willing to allow me to practice with them. So my recommendation to Hal Leonard is to offer a "deluxe" version of this book that includes a couple "play-along" CD's.

Not your normal silk screen book

Mr. Perry has compiled a very strong cross section of screen prints reflecting a new look and feel where this generations's genre is heading.

Short on words, but long on visuals, Mr. Perry understands, that as designers, we want to see things, not read about them. His thoughtful approach to be inclusive to a variety of different styles, yet focusing on work that simply departs from the norm. His insight into the new and upcoming generation of post modernists pays big dividends to us, his audience.

In a way, this book is retro, departing from the thought that everything wonderful has to come out of a computer. Drawing, painting, and content become reintroduced in visual thought. Color, translucency, unregistered imagery are evident to the viewer to savored and sampled.

This is a great book! Michael Perry has demonstrated his ability as an editor/compiler measures up.

I purchased this book as a gift and recipient was thrilled to find it under his Christmas tree this season. As he is not a practioner of this artistic craft, he is appreciative of the craftsmanship demonstrated throughout the pages. He rates it 5 stars.

Yet another great book

If you are looking for inspiration, there's a wide range of work from a number of talented printmaking artists/designers. Like the rest of his books it features work from people with a knack for tactile design. However, in this case the hand done aspect does not only apply to the design/illustration itself, but to the printing process too.
