Another great book

This book can be considered complimentary to more physiologic books about the acid-base/electrolite balance books about renal system. Author describes all pathologies with related test procedures and values. Provides pointers for what to look and what not to mix with. Overall very good introductory book in the subject of renal pathology.

Brilliant

This book is far and away the clearest and most insightful book on kidney disease. The organization is exceptional, not so much the organization of chapters as the organization of thought that is clear throughout the book. Each disease is explained in a perfect context, making it clear how it's similar to but different from others (a great antidote to complains that renal diseases "all look the same and all get steroids anyway". Well, maybe only an antidote to the first claim...). It explains the tools available and ways to assess kidney disease at just the right level of depth--everything that a clinician would need to know, but not details better suited for pathology textbooks. It's about twice as long as it's successor (Renal Pathophysiology: The Essentials) but ten times as insightful.

The curious aspect of reading this book is that it's now 20 years old. In some ways, it's prophetic (such as the value of angiotensin blockade), but in other ways, even the pathophysiology discussion is outdated (no mention of E. coli O157:H7 in the section on hemolytic-uremic syndrome). The discussions of therapy are obsolete, but therapy isn't a major part of a book like this anyway. Even though the brilliance can't be beat, the book is outdated enough that it probably can't be used as a single source on kidney disease, so has to serve as a second book for an especially motivated student. An updated edition would get six stars.

Over the years many thousands of saxophone players, great and small, have learned to play using this book. The book is a comprehensive guide to playing the saxophone. It begins with how to put a saxophone together and how to play your first note and ends with some very sophisticated excercises. Anyone who begins on page one and follows the excercises through to the last page will be a proficient musician. If you just want to learn a couple of tunes to impress your friends, this may not be the right book for you. If you, however, really want to learn to play the saxophone, this is the only book.

Not for the slacker!

This is a great method book that takes you from absolute beginners to moderately advanced levels. Great for someone who is really willing to put in the extra time and effort. This isn't a book to just flip through. It is really worth taking the time to get into this book and truly study the art of playing the sax.

Times change and so should this book

Some interesting exercises and etudes. However the book is very dated. This book has not changed since 1929. I have an original 1929 version and the new book is an exact copy. The saxophone has evolved since 1929, and so should this book.

There is no mention of any of modern saxophone technique. For example the book still refers to an archaic saxophone with right hand low Bb,B and C#keys, there are even has exercises based on this ancient key system. No modern saxophone have these keys. I have never seen a sax with these keys, although the idea is interesting.

The book covers only your basic scales, major, and melodic minor. There is no mention of pentatonics, altered scales, whole tone, harmonics, multiphonics, altissimo etc.

This is not a bad book to have in your collection, but you will need more than this Universal Method to become the next Michael Brecker.

The title Universal Saxophone method may have been appropriate in 1929, it is certainly not appropriate for the year 2006.

Another solid – great – read by Cherise Sinclair

Another solid – great – read by Cherise Sinclair. This series isn’t award winning for its cover’s! Beth and Nolan’s story is heartwarming, touching, a bit angsty, and hot (as usual!). These are characters that we as lovers of this series, know and love. They went through so much to come together as a couple and Beth still has a lot to deal with moving forward in life, and this volume definitely shows how abuse recovery is never ending. The only down side is that the outcome of this story is pretty obvious from the start – before the start actually. Even the synopsis gives away the HEA. I’m ok with that. But for all of Nolan’s retrospective on how he should never have left Beth for so long, or he should have realized that adoption/fostering was going to be a challenge for her, he sure did miss the mark on that Alyssa chick. Why in the world he thought it would be ok for a woman – any woman – to come to his house, when his WIFE isn’t home, and give him “physical therapy”. Yeah, no. I don’t think so. Beth certainly handled it way better than I would have. I realize it was Beth’s idea (sort of), but how Nolan missed that it would cause problems is beyond me, other than…. he’s a man. I digress. Sometimes these ‘in-between’ books are a great way to catch up with all the characters from the series. No exception here. We are definitely being set up for Uzuri’s story (or Holt’s). And Anne is handling pregnancy about as good as you would expect. She’s miserable. Etc. So, again, a great story from the Shadowlands. Of course you have to read it! As soon as you read the previous 10!

Nice...

I'm a huge fan of Sinclair's and have LOVED the "Shadowlands" series and this rating is because of my own personal preferences and not because there's anything wrong with this book.

This story was... nice, a continuation of book 2's story of Nolan and Beth. I love Nolan and Beth's story which is why I bought this extension. I guess it's not like it surround's itself around the BDSM scene but more into normal life issues, which for me kinda kills of the story. There's no heat, no tension between a blossoming relationship and so forth (that happen in book 2). I have read this "Shadowland" series of books many many times but I'm at a stage where I wish Sinclair would more on to another series within the BDSM genre. I recommend this series by a very talented author.

I love Cherise Sinclair...most people that love this genre, love Cherise Sinclair. For me...this book ROCKED IT! She developed out characters that had already appeared in their own book and appeared briefly in others. But this book developed out that there is a full life outside of Shadowlands and bondage/fetish. Whether you are in the lifestyle or not, this story shows a fuller life for characters that sometimes can be written by other writers as one dimensional (who topped who, who punished who and how much they enjoyed it). Yet, make no mistake, this book is still screaming HOT and the sex went there!!! Cherise Sinclair nailed down "people" that we want to come back and visit with; stop over and catch up with (and not just to see whose boundaries were being pushed). And I frankly can't wait to see what she develops out for other Shadowlands characters that are no doubt clamoring in the background of her mind for their own story!

I am so happy to have found the book that my great-uncles were reading when they came up with my grandmother's name. Grandma gave the name to my mother, I took it for myself (I liked it so much) and then gave it to my daughter. I just love having the story I heard all my life come to reality.

Achingly beautiful

This is a tale of complex people who in their interaction find life to be much more complicated than they had expected or feared. Suezo, a moneylender, is tired of life with his nagging, highly imperfect wife, so he decides to take a mistress. Otama, the only child of a widower merchant, wishes that she could provide for her aging father, and when an obviously rich man asks her to be his mistress, a new hope beckons. When Otama learns the truth about Suezo, she feels betrayed, and hopes to find a hero to rescue her. When Otama meets Okada, a medical student, she feels that she might indeed have met her hero.

This is a bittersweet story, a story of hope and unfairness. The wild geese wish only for freedom, but sometimes others use them for purposes they cannot imagine. Published between 1911 and 1913, this book gives an excellent peek into the society of early modern Japan.

This book is an achingly beautiful story, and a fascinating historical document. I highly recommend it.

The coflict between love and surperstition!!

This love story of a girl who became a lover of an old bill collecter and fall in love with a medical student is a sign of japanese mentality in the drastic changing situation between the periode "Edo" and periode "Meiji". As his first novel "Dancer"in wich he told his uncompleated love in Germany(at that time,having a foreign wife was a taboo), Mori tried to show the example of a conflict of natural feeling of love and the traditional superstition.Why the girl could not acheave her love? In Japan they said that a real love is a love forbidden, but it is sure that what Mori wanted to say in this book is not that beauty.
