In its first edition, Soils established itself as the leading textbook in the fields of pedology and soil geomorphology. Expanded and fully updated, this second edition maintains its highly organized and readable style. Suitable as a textbook and a research-grade reference, the book's introductory chapters in soil morphology, mineralogy, chemistry, physics and organisms prepare the reader for the more advanced treatment that follows. Unlike its competitors, this textbook devotes considerable space to discussions of soil parent materials and soil mixing, along with dating and paleoenvironmental reconstruction techniques applicable to soils. Although introductions to widely used soil classification systems are included, theory and processes of soil genesis and geomorphology form the backbone of the book. Replete with more than 550 high-quality figures and photos and a detailed glossary, this book will be invaluable for anyone studying soils, landforms and landscape change anywhere on the globe.

Review
Review of the previous edition:
"... a remarkably comprehensive and up-to-date review ... The writing is clear and concise, and the authors' enthusiasm for their subject material is obvious. This book will appeal to individuals from a number of disciplines and sub-disciplines who find soils interesting, including pedology, soil geomorphology, earth system science, environmental science, and Quaternary geology ... it will be an excellent textbook for upper-level undergraduate and graduate level courses in soil geography, pedology, and geomorphology."
The Canadian Geographer

Review of the previous edition:
"This is a big book in size, concept, and ideas. The book is lavishly illustrated, with an extensive reference list providing the student reader with a ready gateway into the research literature. A large glossary of terms associated with both soils and geomorphology is also a welcome addition to the book. Each section is often approached in quite fresh and new ways ... wonderful."
Environmental Conservation

Review of the previous edition:
"The greatest strength of this text is that it offers a fresh look at soil genesis, blending a variety of concepts and paradigms of the science that are not traditionally addressed together. It serves as an excellent summary of pedogenic theory and should occupy the shelves of all pedologists and students of soil science. Likewise, it would serve as a very useful text for other disciplines, particularly the field sciences such as ecology, geology, range management, forestry, and geomorphology."
Anthony O'Green, Vadose Zone Journal

Review of the previous edition:
"... a comprehensive new text that brings the excitement of discovery back into soil science ... an enthusiastic presentation of the complexity and beauty of soils and the landscapes they occupy. The writing is clear without being simplistic and the numerous figures illustrate the concepts admirably ... The book will be essential reading for teachers, students, researchers, field soil scientists and all who have an interest in soil geomorphology."
Dan Muhs, US Geological Survey

Review of the previous edition:
"... a landmark publication in the study of soils ... This book should be unusually versatile, suitable at advanced undergraduate and graduate levels for courses in pedology, soil geography, and soil geomorphology. It is a remarkable volume, quite unlike any other soils book out there."
Vance Holliday, University of Arizona

Review of the previous edition:
"... a well written, refreshing, and sorely needed addition to the fields of soils, geomorphology, physical geography, ecology, archaeology, and Quaternary geology. This book has it all ... I predict wide adoption in courses that treat these subjects ... Kudos to the authors for a job well done."
Donald Johnson, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Review of the previous edition:
"This fresh treatment of the discipline of pedology is very welcome. Schaetzl and Anderson have crafted a book that is highly readable, utterly up to date and thorough, with dazzling illustrations."
Alan Busacca, Washington State University

Review of the previous edition:
"... a very readable and well-illustrated text that covers all the bases. Finally, we can offer our students a single text that provides a thorough introduction to soil genesis, classification, and soil geomorphology. I'm sure this will become the standard text in the discipline for many years to come. I'm definitely going to adopt it for my Soil Genesis and Geomorphology class."
Art Bettis, University of Iowa

"This is a rare textbook: well-written, comprehensive, up to date, thought-provoking, and refreshingly opinionated. Schaetzl and Anderson took on an ambitious task in writing a textbook that not only covers pedology and soil geomorphology but also provides some of the necessary background in related areas of soil science. They have completed this task in admirable fashion."
Joseph A. Mason, University of Wisconsin, Madison

"The easy style of the writers and the comprehensive and attractive graphics makes this essential reading and reference material ... this is a scholarly contribution to soil science and geomorphology, and largely it delivers what it promises. It is a pleasure to read: it is well organised and illustrated, and it conveys the passion of the authors for their topic ... this is a book that will aid and inspire non-specialists to delve into the glorious world of soils ... It is suitable as an undergraduate text from second- to final-year soil and earth science specialisations ... I'll be buying my own copy."
Peter Almond, Quaternary Australasia

"Schaetzl and Thompson have managed to convey a sense of enthusiasm for their topic throughout the text, assisted in no small measure by the abundant use of pictures and graphics to illustrate their points. Where competing theories exist, the authors carefully give credence to alternatives to those, which they develop in the text."
M. S. Coyne, Choice

Great soil textbook
By John M. Galbraith
This is an excellent textbook, or a good book used to catch up on the science behind soil science. Not as current as journal articles, but the next best source, and with good illustrations and easy to read style.

Perturbing the Organism: The Biology of Stressful Experience (The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Series on Mental Health and

The concept of stress pervades modern society, with relief from it promised on everything from vitamin to vacation packages. Yet there exists no generally accepted classification of stressful experience, nor is the concept itself universally considered a valid subject for research.

This authoritative work is the first to analyze critically the entire range of research and theory on stress in animals and humans, from the earliest studies in the 1930s up to the present day. Herbert Weiner not only documents the many empirical and conceptual advances of recent years, but also supplies a new working definition and classification of stressful experience. He describes the integrated, organismic responses to stressful environmental changes, tasks, and challenges in terms of functional adaptation: the failure of these responses results in injury, ill-health, disease, and death. To examine the coordination between behavior and bodily functions, Weiner reviews current knowledge on how stressful experiences also alter biobehavioral rhythms.

Providing a useful, integrative concept of stress rooted in an understanding of the organism as an interactive communication system composed of many subsystems, Perturbing the Organism will interest a wide range of clinicians and researchers throughout the medical and behavioral sciences.

Human Space, by Otto Friedrich Bollnow

Following its publication in Germany in 1963, Otto Friedrich Bollnow's Human Space quickly became essential reading within a cross-disciplinary field of subject areas including architecture, anthropology, and philosophy. In this first English translation, Bollnow conceives the human experience of space not merely as a philosophical problem but also as an extension of his research into psychology, human behavior, and the conventional domains of architecture: living in a building, in an apartment, in a house. Human Space is a remarkable investigation of space as we experience it, by a man many consider to be the father of spatial and architectural anthropology. This lush hardcover edition includes an afterword by Joseph Kohlmaier that situates the work in the context of philosophical and architectural discussion.

Pivotal Work for the Philosophy of Space
By Reader
This book is a milestone for the spatial turn in the humanities, especially philosophy. Like Bachelard's The Poetics of Space (a work Bollnow refers to), this work provides a phenomenologically-oriented discussions of our interrelation with space. It is a very readable translation, and gives English readers access to an important work on space and place.

It depends on what you want
By Pesky Truth
Planet Hulk (PH) has become part of the definitive Hulk story and probably deserves its place. Before purchasing Planet Hulk, I spent quite a bit of time reading the reviews, with special focus on the negative. After buying and reading PH I can say that, yes, there is some truth to the negativity... but that truth was overshadowed by the degree to which I actually enjoyed the experience.

Yes, PH is a completely formulaic and rather predictable story. You are never going to slap your head and shout, REALLY!?!?! I didn't see that coming! If you are the kind of person who needs your story to be completely unpredictable then you should check out NBC's Hannibal - that show always keeps me guessing. PH, on the other hand is simple, straight and familiar. (indeed, you're probably in the wrong genre since comic books are almost exclusively formulaic)

Having said that, however, I still really enjoyed it. There is something about this story, the primal and angry emotion of it, the pure brutal motivation that comes across as sincere and authentic. I cared what happened next and that is far more important to a story than whether or not you know what is coming next. If Amazon ever gets a kindle version of World War Hulk, I'll most likely buy just because of the PH experience.

Disclosure: While I amfmiliar with the Hulk through both the big and small screen, this is the first actual Hulk comic that I have read.

"Never stop making them pay." - The Worldbreaker
By J. A. Atkins
Planet Hulk is a fantastic story arc. The artwork is great and really takes you to that savage planet and its people. The Hulk in this story is the famous or infamous Green Scar or Worldbreaker hulk who truly becomes the hero as the story unfolds. He is not the savage child-like Hulk that comes to mind when you think of the character. This is a Hulk who can think, fight, reason, love, and sacrifice.

If you love a tale of a reluctant hero fighting his way to the top, this story will do it for you. To complete the saga I would get World War Hulk as well, but Planet Hulk is worth it alone.

One of the best tales of the past decade
By Craig Medaris
I'll state it simply first: Planet Hulk is amazing.

This is the story that Hulk had deserved for the longest time and it might just be the finest story arc he's ever had penned for him. Pak's masterpiece succeeds in finding a place where the Hulk vs Banner dynamic becomes a metaphor for the entire story. The anger which lead Hulk to be in this position to begin with is the central focus for a good portion of the story, yet not in the traditionally handled way. "Hulk Smash!" isn't force fed to the reader and yet when it does appear, you can FEEL some of that rage leaking out of the book, so well is the passion conveyed.

Exciting and yet frightening. Humorous, yet touching: Planet Hulk is the supreme Hulk epic and I believe it will stand the test of time. It has managed to redefine the Hulk not only for the modern reader, but really what he has stood for, for the past 50 odd years.

Bravo.

The Black Cloud (Earth menaced

In 1964, astrophysicists on earth become aware of an immense cloud of gas that is heading for the solar system. The cloud, if interposed between the sun and the earth, could wipe out most of the life on earth by blocking solar radiation and ending photosynthesis. A cadre of astronomers and other scientists is drawn together in Nortonstowe, England, to study the cloud and report to the British government about the consequences of its presence.

Excellent science fiction and real science of consciousness
By Paul L. Nunez
The Amazon site associated with a different printing contains many excellent reviews of The Black Cloud by British astronomer Fred Hoyle, my favorite science fiction story that I have re-read many times. Here I focus on some of the philosophical implications of this classic 1957 novel to modern studies of consciousness. Hoyle's novel stimulated the interests of two historical figures in a personal and professional relationship at the time: physicist Wolfgang Pauli and psychologist Carl Jung. As described in Hoyle's autobiography Home Is Where the Wind Blows: Chapters from a Cosmologist's Life, Pauli later told Hoyle that he discussed the philosophical implications of the novel with Jung and thought the novel was "better than your astronomical work."

In Hoyle's novel, a black cloud of matter with diameter larger than the earth-sun separation approaches our solar system. The heroic scientists make repeated attempts to study its physical properties by probing the cloud with electromagnetic signals of different frequencies, resulting in cloud behavior in apparent violation of known physical laws. After eliminating all other possibilities, the scientists are forced to an astounding conclusion: the cloud is intelligent! The scientist's next question is whether the cloud contains a single consciousness or many little conscious entities. They decide that the cloud has developed highly effective means of internal communication by electromagnetic fields. Each small part of the cloud is able to send signals to other parts in select frequency bands. The imagined process is analogous to the internet, but with a large fraction of the earth's population on-line at all times and rapidly sending messages to an ever changing subset of recipients.

The scientists decide that because the rate of information transfer between all parts of the cloud is so high, the sub-clouds can not be considered as having separate consciousnesses. Any thoughts or emotions experienced by a sub-cloud are assumed to be quickly and fully transmitted to many other sub-clouds. Thus the black cloud is deemed to contain a single global consciousness. Individual sub-clouds might be concerned with tasks like celestial navigation, memory storage, internal regulation of bodily functions and so forth; however, for the cloud to behave as a single mind, the sub-clouds must work in concert. Neuroscientists now refer to the analogous brain processes as functional segregation and functional integration. Different brain regions do different things; they are segregated. At the same time, they cooperate to yield a unified behavior and (apparent) unified consciousness so they are integrated. The question of how this can be accomplished in human brains, known as the binding problem in neuroscience, is discussed many places, including my new book (2010). The work of Benjamin Libet, Mind Time: The Temporal Factor in Consciousness (Perspectives in Cognitive Neuroscience), shows that our subjective feeling of the present actually refers to times about ½ second in the past; consciousness is distributed over time. Modern neuroscience studies (EEG, etc) show that consciousness is also distributed over space within the brain as implied in Hoyle's novel. Still another excellent yarn by Hoyle having to do with the apparent relationship of consciousness to information is October the First Is Too Late. Although these are books of fiction, Hoyle makes it quite clear in his comments that he is quite serious about the ideas presented.

The Barometer Handbook: A Modern Look at Barometers and Applications of Barometric Pressure, by David Burch

An in-depth look at barometers and applications of barometric pressure
by the author of Modern Marine Weather.

The barometer remains the most important tool for evaluating and predicting the weather. This book explains why knowing accurate values of the atmospheric pressure can improve this process and benefit all applications.

Ways to evaluate and calibrate aneroid and electronic barometers using readily available data by Internet or telephone are clearly described. Tactical applications to marine navigation are covered. The book also includes worldwide average monthly pressures and their standard deviations

With the exception of trained meteorological crews, barometers in the past were used at sea primarily to learn if the pressure was going up or down, and whether it was doing this rapidly or slowly. And from this we made an educated guess of a likely consequence, usually in conjunction with other observations. Outside of professional marine use, little effort was made to know the true pressure for several reasons. We did not know what to do with it if we had it, and more often we could not get it if we wanted it, because most barometers were not calibrated.

This has changed. We now have many valuable applications of accurate pressure, and we also have affordable ways to get it, and we have convenient ways to prove our instruments work properly.

The main goal of this book is to show how all this comes about, and to give more insight into this fascinating, venerable instrument that has been with us for 150 years. Another goal is to introduce users to the new breed of electronic devices that are in the process of revolutionizing how we do weather at sea. We also re-introduce mariners to several classic aneroid instruments that are highly accurate and tested at sea for over 70 years, and why we benefit from having both a calibrated aneroid and an electronic barometer on board.

–––––

"After the thermometer, the barometer is most fundamental of weather instruments, and The Barometer Handbook takes the reader on an entertaining and informative trip through the history and use of this critical tool and provides a look at how barometric pressure effects climate and our weather." — Peter Isler, two-time America's Cup winning navigator.

–––––

"Like a rock star, David Burch is producing hit after hit! His latest piece, The Barometer Handbook is a first. It is the only comprehensive book on barometers that a mariner can refer to that will ensure how important it is to not only have a barometer when coastal or blue water cruising, but to be able to maintain and update its accuracy. The Barometer Handbook is the second book alongside his Modern Marine Weather that can serve as booksends for Bowditch." — Lee Chesneau, senior marine forecaster, Ocean Prediction Center, NWS (Retired).

–––––

"This is great stuff. It's the kind of book I wish I had when I started my career." — Christopher Hampel, Calibration Scientist, Barometry, Weather and Environmental Monitoring, Environment Canada.

–––––

"Yet another brilliant book from the hand and mind of Dr David Burch. I loved reading this book." — Kenn Batt, Manager, Canberra Meteorological Office, Bureau of Meteorology, Canberra ACT Australia.

A Gold Mine
By J. Weaver
Few are the books that address the very heart of a wide-ranging subject; even fewer in my opinion are those that are so well organized and researched, and written by an acknowledged expert in an eminently interesting and readable style, that they carry us effortlessly down the road to an excellent grounding in the subject. And perhaps even more importantly, bridge the gap between theory and practicality, between mere interesting facts and usefulness. I find The Barometer Handbook to be just such a book.

I am an avid sailor, an airline pilot by trade, and was briefly acquainted with the author's reputation and several of his books when I found this one, newly published in 2009. With interests in navigation and meteorology, I picked the book up hopeful that it would be well written and informative.

It is more, very much more. I could not put it down, and it cost me a couple of very late nights. If you have any interest at all in the weather, whether just casual or from a more academic perspective, this book is required reading. If you are an interested sailor or pilot, living and working in the weather and very much concerned with the forecast, put it at the very top of your list. Or if instead you have an interest in the barometer as an instrument - its development, its workings, its modern construction and uses - you cannot do without this book.

Many of us know that atmospheric pressure and its measurement are at the heart of all meteorology. But it becomes obvious in reading the book that it would be a great mistake to assume that having a simple barometer and knowing how to use it are of little value in modern times, given the easy availability over the internet of weather charts with actual and predicted frontal systems, winds, and pressure readings for nearly any area on earth.

It is no accident that you will find an accurate barometer on every ship, whether military or civilian. The instrument is clearly no mere holdover from sailing ship days, nor a quaint decoration. For weather charts and predictions are one thing: actual conditions are another. The barometer allows you to judge the accuracy of the forecasts, past and present, as well as help you see and prepare for what is coming to your specific location, which may well be quite different than the forecast for your general area. Mr. Burch is very convincing in his assertion that a blind reliance on technology is in no way a substitute for acquiring and understanding how to use your own information. I am convinced that no tool is better suited for this than a good barometer, and The Barometer Handbook to explain how to use it.

It is the author's unspoken enthusiasm for the subject and his evident dedication that make it clear just how useful this knowledge is to us. Excellent background information make up the first two chapters - Introduction and Atmospheric Pressure; the next two are Reading and Care of Barometers and Barometer Calibration, and these four chapters alone are worth the cost of the book, giving an in-depth understanding of the instrument and its background. These are followed by Barometers & Weather Forecasting, the Role of Accurate Pressure in Marine Weather, and Other Roles of Atmospheric Pressure - all fabulous reading, and true to the author's other books, expertly informative. Barometer Selection - invaluable - then Altimeters, and Worldwide Monthly Mean Pressures are the final three chapters, with even more information at your fingertips in the Appendices. The book is a gold mine, and a fascinating one at that.

A must have book
By Kenn Batt
Yet another brilliant book from the hand and mind of Dr David Burch. I loved reading this book.

Having read a number of books on barometry over the years, I have to admit that this book has to be the most useful particularly from a weather practitioner's perspective. In fact there is a bit for everyone who has an interest in atmospheric pressure and weather in general.

Commencing with a "potted history" of barometry and the principles of atmospheric pressure in Chapers One and Two. David moves into the " nuts and bolts" of pressure and barometers in Chapters Three, Four, Five and Six. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on calibration and the role of accurate pressure in marine weather. Barometer calibration has long been an overlooked side of the barometer equation.

The contents of Chapter Seven are an eye opener for readers interested in the other roles of pressure. From the medical to the sporting side, David has done a great deal of research in order to give the reader a better understanding of the role of atmospheric pressure in areas other than weather forecasting.

The outstanding chapter would have to be Chapter Eight on Barometer Selection. This would appeal to anyone who has to make the ultimate decision on what barometer would be the best value for money for their vessel or home. I didn't realise until reading this chapter just what a wonderful instrument the Fischer aneroid barometer is for the money that I paid for it from Starpath.

In Chapter Nine, David covers the subject of altimetry in great detail. This chapter will of course appeal to the aviator and to the reader who is after a well written, accurate and easy to understand explanation of this complex topic.

An up-to-date treatment of average mean sea level pressure charts is presented in Chapter Ten. This work has long been awaited outside of the world of the professional meteorologist working for a National Weather Service. David presents this in a way that any reader can understand and use.

In Further Reading, David presents a listing of publications that are relatively easy to obtain and wide-ranging which caters for the tastes of all readers.

The Appendices are first rate and would be extremely useful to all "users of pressure"

In all I loved reading this book. David Burch is to be congratulated on yet another first class publication. This book will be the ideal companion to his book Modern Marine Weather. This Handbook will appeal to anyone who is interested in the subject of barometry.

Vital for calibrating new or old barometers
By Carlos Gibran
Great book! Vital details about how to set and calibrate a barometer. This is something that I struggled with in the past because i never understood how to do it.

I also never realized how powerful a weather tool the digital barometer/temp/humidity units are. Way more accurate for predicting the weather than just a stand alone barometer.

Also good descriptions and analysis of both analog and digital barographs. Sadly a good digital barograph will set you back hundreds of dollars, (mind you a good analog barometer will also do that... ;o)
