PreS. A collection of poems about animals and a story about a journey through the jungle to hunt for them. The search begins as a small group of ants marches off from their hill early in the morning. A verse then introduces each creature as encountered, until the end of the day when all of the animals are ready to sleep. As an added bonus, each poem gives a little information about the animal described. A nice rhythm is established and maintained. An occasional line is awkward, but overall the book reads well. The illustrations are equally playful and eye-catching. Done in oils, each one is bright, bold, and inviting, but totters on the brink of being cute. Large, double-page spreads make the animals easily seen from a distance, but children who view the pictures up close will delight in finding some of the ants on each page. Bright and fun

This book rhymes and has a catchy rhythm the kids enjoy. The pictures are bold and bright. The simple amount of text allows many natural opportunities for animal sounds and voices. The pages have small details that are also fun. My kids like to find and point out the ants crawling through the pages of the book. Each page is a different poem. There is no cohesive storyline but rather a little silly poem about each animal. Because of the simple rhyming and bright colors my kids were all interested in the book from newborn to now preschool age. Commotion in the Ocean by the same author/illustrator is equally as good. My kids ask for both.

LOVE!!!

My neighbor gave me 2 books by the same author and illustrator (hard cover), Commotion in the Ocean and Baryard Hullbaloo. My girl absolutely LOVES these 2 books especially Commotion in the Ocean. Seeing as she loves these two I wanted to get Rumble in the Jungle, she is only 10 months so I got her a durable board book instead of a hardcore book cause I didnt want the pages to tear. I unwrapped it, showed her the book and she did a "OoOOOO!" face and crawled to me and we sat down and read the book.
Mesmerized. The pages are colorful, the rhymes are fun and tuney. I ADORE these books. Ever time I turned the page she will open up her eyes to take in all the colors and I would watch her eyes dart from side to side to see the pictures. Then would babble something about the picture.. then would want to turn to the next page. I love love LOVE how each page I turn the colors are a little bit different, the scenery is different so there is a nice contrast been the page you are on and to the next. There is also a 'dark' page towards the end of the book where it is night time, she loves this page too (also in the other two books) I truely recommendd this book its amazing. It IS a little short but for a toddler whos attention span is limited its fabulous!

Embarrass your kids, repeat it word for word....

This is truly a great book for little ones, engaging rhyming scheme that catches little minds without having to try too hard. Wonderful visuals that make it easy to look over repeatedly. I read it so many times to my now 17-year old son, I can still repeat the opening sequence, word for word! "There's a rumble in the jungle, there's a whisper in the trees...." I use it now just to embarrass him. Have bought several copies as gifts for nieces and nephews - always a big hit!

About the Author

MASAKUNI KAWASUMI II worked in the family bonsai business for decades, designing his own tools and cultivating bonsai on a professional level. He took over the business in 1950. Masakuni II is credited with popularizing bonsai around the world. For his work in tool making, he was awarded a Yellow Ribbon Medal by the Japanese Government in 1993. In 1996, he established the Masakuni Museum of Cutting Tools and Industrial Tools near Tokyo.

When his father died in 2002, MASAKUNI KAWASUMI III took over the business, which he runs today while continuing his research in the cultivation and care of bonsai.

A well-organized, helpful start

In short, my opinion is that this is an excellent book if you are serious about bonsai and would like to get started, or to complement your knowledge from other books.

Before I purchased this book, I checked out several books from my local library. Some books seem to show many pictures of finished bonsai without really getting into details and I feel as if I still don't have the knowledge to even start on a bonsai. This book is a bit more helpful with step-by-step pictures from repotting to pruning, diagrams of undesirable branches, and methods of propagation.

There is a lot of information in this book that I read in this book that other books brush by, but I found helpful to me. Without a doubt, it is important to read different books because each author has their own views on certain issues.

Other books that you might want to look into are "Bonsai (101 Essential Tips)" by Harry Tomlinson and "The Bonsai Workshop" by Herb Gustafson.

I do not recommend this book to the beginner who is just getting into Bonsai care-taking. This is more of a comprehensive book explaining how to create, shape, and nurture Bonsai trees. This book is very well written for and advanced level Bonsai owner. It goes into detail about how to start Bonsai trees, wire them, how to pick out the right environment, etc.
So if you're beginning, I think you should pass this book by at first. If, however, you have been into Bonsai trees for a while, this is the book to go with.

Fine Summary of Advanced Level Bonsai

This is a fine work on Advanced Techniques for the Bonsai enthusiast, in particular giving full particulars on specialty tools and pruning shears in Bonsai Culture. It is kind of surprising the great tips one can get, from just the one paragraph tips that the authors son added after his father death. Very concise and precise is a great summary for this book.

The Genius Who Invented the Jet Age

Aside from the British English coloquialisms and their maddening propensity to use plural verbs for singular nouns, this is an outstanding story of the man who fought a persistent lack of leadership, lack of vision, lack of support, and lack of honor by a bureaucratic and Machiavellian government. The Britsh government in World War II almost actively worked against the efforts of this genius, nationalized (read stole) the company he established to research and develop jet engines, gave his invention away to America, and gave him a paltry award for his efforts. The vision, leadership, guidance, and thankless labors of Sir Frank Whittle advanced the science of jet propulsion to unbelievable levels. His first patent on the engine existed before (and was probably reviewed by) Ohain in Germany, who although talented and gifted, did not co-invent the gas turbine engine. Aside from all that, this book is entirely engrossing and gives a non-biased account of the steps leading up to the invention of the gas turbine engine and the man whose genius, herculian work, and single-mindedness was totally responsible for ushering in the jet age. He should be praised and recognized much more than he has been by the British government - whose subject he was - as well as the US government who were enabled entry into the jet age much earlier than they would have, when they were given the invention for free (thanks to Hap Arnold for his foresight). Get the book, read it, and prepare to be amazed.

Jet Engine History Revealed!

If you are an aficionado of turbine engine history you owe it to yourself to find out how it all started. John Golley gives an exhaustive account of Frank Whittle's struggle to develop and perfect the first jet aero engine. The technical difficulties are discussed, but the emphasis is on Whittle's battles with the British government over private versus government control of patents, R&D funding, and development work. It also illustrates how war-time necessities can actually delay experimental work when priorities are placed on existing technology (i.e. piston engines). Well written with great detail on who, what, where, and when. Working in the engineering field myself, I would have liked to have more detail on the "nuts & bolts", but this is a minor complaint. There is more than enough detail in this area for the average reader.

Depressing story of beaurocracy at its worst...

I found the book interesting however if you're hoping for a good explanation of the JET engine, the developments and aircraft, this book is NOT for you. Not enough meat, diagrams or pictures. See instead other works like Klaus Hunecke's excellent book "Jet Engines".
If you're an avid historian and want to know how a visionary RAF officer/engineer worked himself to near death for little reward or advancement within a government system that tried hard to stymie him at every step, this is indeed a moving,fascinating and somewhat depressing book... they even gave his engines away to the Russians and Americans.

About the Author
MARSEL VAN OOSTEN swapped an award-winning career in advertising for nature and wildlife photography after his interest grew following a trip to Tanzania. Dutch-born Marsel’s photographs demonstrate his mastery of composition, lighting, color and perspective. His work is featured in galleries and museums, and used in advertising, design and editorial features. His many accolades include the International Photography Awards, European Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards, Travel Photographer of the Year Awards, Nature’s Best International Photography Awards and Nature Photographers’ Network EP Awards.

DANIËLLA SIBBING graduated from the school of Marketing & Economics in the Netherlands. She began a career in advertising, specializing in project and account management before founding her own company. During her travels, Daniëlla began shooting travel documentaries in order to capture the nature, wildlife and culture of the countries she visited. Her eye for detail and editing skills resulted in videography becoming her new passion. Strictly a bathroom reader

Any fans of stand-up comedy will like the idea of this book, one section for each aspect of comedy. But unfortunately it falls into the same trap most comedy books: It's tries to be funny first and interesting second.

There's little substance, just jokes, and very few times I really laughed. Reading this from front to back is ill-advised, put it next to the can and read a few pages while you're dropping the kids off at the pool.

BTW, there's a book-on-tape out on this book where popular comedians read out chapters of the book in front of audiences. It's also kinda Zzzz....: [...]

I don't do this thing

I don't do book reviews, I don't do surveys, I'm really lazy. But, for this book? For this book, I will take three minutes to write my first ever book review. It will be short. Ready? This is the funniest book I have ever read in my entire life. Sure, it could just be a crazy coincidence that the humor of the authors is the exact humor I like, but I think that anyone will find this book funny. I read the book over the course of a month so as to savor it, and I read 5 pages a night, and I laughed every single night, and 3/4ths of the nights I laughed till I had tears in my eyes. I'm cynical and not humored easily. But this book is incredibly funny.

For almost thirteen-year-old Bethany, life has suddenly and unexplicably taken a strange turn. For a girl who has never spent a night away from her parents, she's suddenly hustled into the car by her sad-looking father, subjected to listening to her sobbing mother, and unceremoniously dropped off in the middle of the night in a town she's never heard of, at the home of a woman claiming to be her Aunt Myrlie. Her parents are a lot older than her friend's parents, and Bethany is sure that her parent's siblings are all dead. So who is this woman claiming to be her Aunt, and why has she never heard of her before? Why won't her mother stop crying? Why does her dad seem so eager to get away from the house in Sanderfield? And who the heck is Elizabeth, the name she overheard her father and Myrlie discussing?

All these questions and more are only the tip of the iceberg in Margaret Peterson Haddix's newest novel, a wonderful young adult thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed. The twists and turns are unpredictable and unexpected--the conclusion one I never saw coming.

Overall, a great suspenseful read for teens and adults alike!

The book is just amazing. One of Margaret Peterson Haddix's best books. As Bethany finds out about her past and her parents past, one is just electrified, in a good way.
I liked how Margaret Peterson Haddix surprises you with every turn, much like J.K Rowling's Harry Potter.
I would suggest this book to kids in middle school.

purchased for daughter aged 12. Her reading varies from anime, greek mythology, to percy jackson books. She had to read this particular book for school. she enjoyed the twist and turns of the story. she highly recommends it.
