I rode Snowman as a child
By Dreamer
I was a 10 and 11 year old girl in love with horses when my parents agreed to give me lessons. We lived on the south shore of Long Island, about 45 minutes from the de Layer farm, but Harry de Layer was chosen to be my teacher. Snowman, not yet a champion, was one of the horses Mr. de Layer used to teach eager children like me. Mr. de Layer taught me that if I were a gentle, kind rider, I could learn invaluable lessons about courage and accomplishment. Snowman rewarded me with an extraordinary personal experience and an amazing example that, in life, anything is possible if you are willing to try. I was outraged to read a one star review, a personal attack by a local person who says Harry De Layer abused his horses. I absolutely do not believe that and wonder what part jealousy and bigotry may have played to influence the writer of that review and/or his own riding teachers. Mr. de Layer always insisted that his horses be treated well. His message was to learn to trust the horse, trust myself and to find the rhythm between the horse's spirit and my own. I was a tiny girl, Snowman was a very big horse and Mr. de Layer and Snowman taught me not only how to enjoy jumping and showing, but also a great deal about myself and life in general. I am so grateful to have known them both and my life has been richer for it. I am now 65 and have shared this story with my children and grandchildren. Mr. de Layer and Snowman are still teaching my family about the spirit of kindness and courage.
I wish I could recommend the book as highly as I do Mr. de Layer. I found it quite shallow and very repetitive. Letts tells us about Snowman and Harry de Layer, but doesn't allow us to get to know them. They are worth getting to know. Her emphasis, over and over, is on the "fleabitten" horse,"immigrant small farmer," and an overblown emphasis on class distinctions. These points may have some validity, but Harry and Snowman are both so very much more than that. In my opinion, Harry de Layer and Snowman are still waiting for the book they deserve.

True story of a wonder horse
By Melanie01
I grew up hearing about the amazing Snowman, but without knowing most of the details of his life. If you're interested in just how Snowman and his rescuer and owner Harry de Leyer made it to the top of the show jumping world against staggering odds, you will enjoy this book. The author does a wonderful job making the main characters: Harry, his wife and children and of course Snowman, believable and easy to like. Actually, really admire. Harry's wife kept meticulous financial records, cleaned their homes perfectly, took care of the six children, making sure that each was always dressed in clean, ironed clothes, and in her spare time, she and the children went out to the family stable, cleaned stalls, groomed, fed and watered the horses. Wow! What an amazing support system Harry had! They also attended every show, including marching into the ring in their Sunday-best -- lined up from youngest to oldest and helped Harry and Snowman collect their ribbons and prize money while getting their photos taken. Regardless, I found myself cheering for Harry and Snowman over every jump and at every show. The close-knit family was always scrapped for cash, but they did everything together and one gets the sense of how loving they were and how harmonious their family life was. Almost unbelievable.
So this leads me to one of my few problems with the book. As you're turning the last few pages, you will learn that Harry and the perfect missus are divorced and Harry has moved from his wonderful and hard-earned farm in New York to Virginia. What? What happened to all those adoring children and the sweetest, most devoted wonderful wife? Why did they get divorced? What?? The author never tells us. A very strange ending to this book.

Cinderella horse
By Kilian85710
I had a hard time deciding on how many stars to give this book. The story is so compelling: a horse rescued minutes before being turned into dog food that becomes a champion jumper. A survivor of the Nazi occupation of his country who succeeds in America. What's not to like? In the end, the story rises above the pedestrian prose of the author. This book reminds me of endless Disney movies I watched when I was a kid. Animals, real and fictional, overcome obstacles to win in the end. The writing is not bad, not good, just—competent. I did a lot of skipping to get to the interesting bits. I had a lot of unanswered questions. Why was the Knox school so rigid about giving Harry the time off to compete, when his success would reflect so well on the school? Why did his wife divorce him after so many years together? Why does he only marry women with names like Johann and Joan? Why is a 77-year-old man pitching bales of hay?
Still, it *is* a compelling, feel-good story. I'm not sorry for the time it took to read it, but Harry and Snowman deserve better.
